The guiding research questions revolve around how journeyers encountered, reacted to, and reported on foreign peoples, lands, and customs as they left behind their homes and travelled throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. From their liminal position as persons displaced from their home societies and separated from the ideology and social relations of their native lands, travellers offer a new perspective on a web of connections that permeated a dynamic, responsive, and interconnected medieval world. Chapter One examines the travel accounts of two Andalusi voyagers, Abu Hamid al- Gharnati, a Muslim scholar, and Ibn Jubayr, a pilgrim to Mecca. Looking particularly at religious questions, I read their travel diaries against a backdrop of supposed cultural and religious ethnocentrism and find that while both men hold on to their Muslim faith as a tie to their home worlds, each exhibits cultural awareness and curiosity and participates in a more complicated and diverse world than the one he left behind. Chapter Two is a study of the essential travel components of two popular works of Castilian fiction, the Libro de Alexandre (from before 1250) and the Libro del Caballero Zifar (c. 1300). I focus in particular on the positive representation of the foreign and how these works might reflect back upon the authors’ v home societies. These two ideas—the positive representation of the unfamiliar and the veiled commentary on the authors’ native lands—are main themes in Chapter Three. This chapter treats two works of imaginary travels, the Libro del conosçimiento (c. 1390) and the Libro del Infante don Pedro de Portugal (in circulation by c. 1470). I examine the manner in which the authors utilize the foreign as a way to comment upon problems within their own communities. By setting up foreigners as models of inspiration, the writers were able to advocate for Christian unity and improved moral behavior by admonishing and encouraging their Christian readers without criticizing them outright. Two early-fourteenth-century Castilian travellers are the subject of Chapter Four. Ruy González de Clavijo, an ambassador of Enrique III to the Mongol- Turkic suzerain Timur in Samarkand, and the Cordoban knight Pero Tafur befriend foreign rulers and social inferiors, exchange gifts, and willingly participate in customs alien to their own culture and religion. Praising foreign societies for their wealth, power, and sophistication, Clavijo and Tafur portray themselves as special friends of important foreigners, thus positioning themselves as men specially suited to strengthen the bonds between Castile and alien civilizations in Europe, Africa, and Asia. From the variety of reasons for and manners in which these men journeyed abroad, I conclude that travel is a unique act that has the ability to modify the voyager’s perceptions of the unfamiliar and the foreign. By re-focusing the study of travel literature on the points of contact between the traveller and the foreigner, I attempt in this dissertation to highlight the ways in which medieval Iberian voyagers approached the unfamiliar with more open-mindedness and curiosity than might be expected given the social and historical contexts from which they departed. vi INTRODUCTION As it does today, travel played a meaningful role in the lives of medieval Europeans. Men, women, and children, old and young, noble and commoner made journeys close to and far from home.1 Medieval Europeans travelled for a variety of reasons: local and long-distance pilgrimage, war and crusade, fairs and festivals, trade, commerce, marriage, missionary activity, diplomatic relations, desire for knowledge, delivery of news and messages, knightly feats, royal and noble obligations, diversion, and adventure. While most who left home would have travelled willingly, others were forced to wander as punishment for crimes or perhaps to complete a pilgrimage instead of facing incarceration. Some soldiers must have preferred the comforts of home to war abroad, but others embraced the opportunity to break up the monotony of routine life (lay or monastic) and to see the world beyond. As travel was such a familiar part of many peoples’ lives, it is no surprise that this theme appears in works of fiction as well as biographical or autobiographical works based on true stories throughout the Middle Ages. The situation in medieval Iberia is no different. The idea of journey or travel can be found in a variety of literary genres: popular love poetry, the learned mester de clerecía, chivalric novels, royal chronicles, and travel literature, both fiction and non-fiction, from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. Journeying outside one’s own town or country provides myriad experiences to relate 1. There are several thoroughly enjoyable studies that inform the modern reader about medieval travel in general, the details of the physical journey, who travelled and for what reasons, and other information that perhaps is not readily apparent in our world of comparatively easy journeys. Norbert Ohler’s The Medieval Traveller (1986) discusses logistics of voyages such as climate and geography, modes of transport, and hospitality. The book also includes discussions of several specific medieval European travellers. Travel in the Middle Ages by Jean Verdon (1998) likewise addresses transportation, lodging, and the various peoples who realized journeys to near or distant lands and their reasons for doing so. Margaret Wade Labarge’s Medieval Travellers (1982) examines general and specific people who travelled in the Middle Ages, and she focuses her study especially on noble or royal travellers, of whom we have the most extant information. These three works are excellent starting points for imagining the world in which medieval voyagers lived and moved. 1 to one’s peers and friends back home. The international diffusion of the Spanish American silver peso between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries transformed it into what could be termed as an almost universal, metallic money. The reasons for the global trade and circulation of this commodity money can be explained by the dynamics of supply and demand. On the supply side, the silver mines of Spanish America were the richest in the world and allowed for a voluminous and rising production of high-value bars and coins for several centuries. On the demand side, it is clear that silver (and gold) were long the most highly valued money commodities in ancien regime societies and economies since metallic currencies tended to be dominant as medium of exchange in a large range of transactions. In this regard, analysis of the extraordinary historical and geographical trajectories of the silver peso in the Americas, Europe, the Mideast and Asia between the sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries can elucidate important aspects of premodern processes of globalization.

After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

    The Masters of Calatrava and the Castilian Civil War 1350-1369 BY JOSEPH F. O'CALLAGHAN Düring the third quarter of the fourteenth Century the bitter civil war between King Pedro the Cruel (1350-1369) and his half-brother, Count Enrique of Trastamara, tore the kingdom of Castile asunder, dividing its leaders and people, allowing no one the privilege of neutrality. Prominent among the participants in the conflict were the masters of the military Order of Calatrava who, together with the masters of Santiago and Alcäntara, ranked among the great men of the realm. As the war progressed, the king and his challenger endeavored to control magisterial elections and, through them, the immense resources that the Order of Calatrava possessed in the modern provinces of Ciudad Real, Jaen, Cordoba, Seville, and so forth. The consequence was schism within the Order, the diversion of its interest and wealth to domestic politics rather than the reconquest, and an increasing brutalization of life, typified by the execution of one master by Pedro and another by Enrique. Above all, the civil war pointed up the crown's growing awareness of the need to subject all the military Orders to effective royal control. ^ Juan Nünez de Prado At the time of Pedro the CruePs accession to the throne in March 1350 at the youthful age of sixteen years, Juan Nünez de Prado was the master of Calatrava. The illegitimate son of a knight named Carpintero and Bianca, senora of Las Huelgas and daughter of King Afonso III of Portugal (1248-1279), he was legitimated in 1313, on his mother's request, 2 by Pope Clement V, and entered the Order of Calatrava.

SMARANDACHE a Syrian gentleman, warrior­poet, Muslim amir, and fāris (488–584/1095–1188)—described variously as uignorancesaMa Iofbn the Munq FrankishIdh language in his Kitab al-iʿtibar (The Book of Learning (knight)—professes by Example), when recounting one of his childhood memories. Born to the Arab dynasty of the Banu Munqidh, who ruled the castle and hinterland of Shayzar on the Aṣi (or Orontes) River, Usama had grown up in close proximity to the Frankish Principality of Antioch. In the decade following the First Crusade (488–492/1095–1099), the Banu Munqidh and their Frankish neighbours engaged begun his military training. Recalling that time decades later, he remembers that in periodic raids and skirmishes. By that time, Usama was a youth and might have Tancred, the Christian ruler of Antioch (d. 506/1112), had granted a guarantee unfortunate young cavalier was actually heading into a trap that cost him his right of safe-conduct to a skilled horseman from Shayzar, a man named Hasanun. (The ­ Ifranjī eye, but he had trusted in Tancred’s good will.) After describing the initial negotia 1 tion of safe-conduct, Usama adds that “they speak only in Frankish ( ) so we had no idea what they were saying.” To date, Usama’s statement has deterred scholars from investigating the small number of Frankish loanwords preserved in his book, it appears to leave extent of his second language acquisition in greater depth.
