All the early A Cistercian texts and many comments by outside observers remark on this. According to the Exordium parvum the monks, while still at Molesme, “often spoke to each other, lamented, and were saddened by the transgression of the Rule of Saint Benedict.”1 William of Malmesbury in his Chronicle also mentions their distress that they were not able to follow “the purity of the Rule,” and he stressed the importance the Cistercians attached to this by saying, “So intent are they on their Rule, that they think not a jot or tittle of it should be disregarded.”2 Writing in about 1135, the Norman monk Orderic Vitalis described the reforming commu- nity as endeavoring “to carry out a literal observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict,”3 and he quotes Robert as saying to his monks: We have made our profession, my dear brothers, according to the Rule of our holy father Benedict, but it seems to me that we have not observed it in every point. We have many customs which are not laid down there, and we carelessly overlook a number of its precepts.
