The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music. -

Głęboka 28, 20-612 Lublin ABSTRACT Locating monasteries in river valleys with a considerable tributary system is regarded to be one of the rules for establishing Cistercian foundations: Bernardus valles, colles Benedictus amabat, Franciscus vicos, ma- gnas Dominicus urbes. A river valley provided opportunity for spatial development and land cultivation on fertile ground, something that Cistercian monks specialized in. In their efforts to raise effectiveness of their production, they did not underestimate the importance of water, not only by developing their fishing ponds, but also making water the main driving force for water mills and fulling mills, thereby promoting modern rural ‘food’ industry such as distilleries, breweries and open-pan salt production. In today’s post-cistercian landscape, in spite of many centuries of economic landscape exploitation, we can still discover properly func- tioning natural systems and traces of comprehensively developed water systems. Using the solutions utilized in monasteries all around Europe, the Order managed to enrich and shape landscape in a very considerable and unique way, not only on economic and social, but ecological level, too. 2019 Pilgrimage Through the French Monasticism Movement
2019 Pilgrimage through the French Monasticism Movement We invite you to pilgrimage through France to observe the French Monasticism movement, the lessons it holds for the church today and for your own personal spiritual growth. We will visit Mont St-Michel, stay in the monastery at Ligugé, spend a weekend immersed in the Taizé Community, and make stops in other historic and contemporary monastic settings. Our days and reflections will be shaped by both ancient and contemporary monastic practices. Itinerary Days 1 and 2 – Arrive Paris and visit Chartres We will begin our pilgrimage by traveling from the Paris airport to Chartres Cathedral where we will begin and dedicate our pilgrimage by walking the massive labyrinth laid in the floor of the nave just as pilgrims have done before us for nearly 800 years. We will spend the night in Chartres at The Hôtellerie Saint Yves, built on the site of an ancient monastery and less than 50 m from the cathedral. Day 3 and 4 – Mont-Saint-Michel and Ligugé In the morning, we will travel to the mystical islet of Mont-Saint-Michel, a granite outcrop rising sharply (to 256 feet) out of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay (between Brittany and Normandy). We will spend the day here and return on Sunday morning to worship as people have since the first Oratory was built in the 8th Century. After lunch on the mount we will head to Ligugé Monastery for the night. Day 5 – Vézelay Following the celebration of Lauds and breakfast at Ligugé, we will depart for the hilltop town of Vézelay. -

Susan Carter A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History–Doctor of Philosophy 2021 ABSTRACT JOHN OF SALISBURY: COLLEAGUE, CRITIC, AND SOMETIME COUNSELOR TO THOMAS BECKET By L. Susan Carter John of Salisbury was one of the best educated men in the mid-twelfth century. The beneficiary of twelve years of study in Paris under the tutelage of Peter Abelard and other scholars, John flourished alongside Thomas Becket in the Canterbury curia of Archbishop Theobald. There, his skills as a writer were of great value. Having lived through the Anarchy of King Stephen, he was a fierce advocate for the liberty of the English Church. Not surprisingly, John became caught up in the controversy between King Henry II and Thomas Becket, Henry’s former chancellor and successor to Theobald as archbishop of Canterbury. Prior to their shared time in exile, from 1164-1170, John had written three treatises with concern for royal court follies, royal pressures on the Church, and the danger of tyrants at the core of the Entheticus de dogmate philosophorum , the Metalogicon , and the Policraticus. John dedicated these works to Becket. The question emerges: how effective was John through dedicated treatises and his letters to Becket in guiding Becket’s attitudes and behavior regarding Church liberty? By means of contemporary communication theory an examination of John’s writings and letters directed to Becket creates a new vista on the relationship between John and Becket—and the impact of John on this martyred archbishop. -

Even after the ninth-century adoption of the Rule of Benedict as the standard for most monasteries throughout the Carolingian Empire, there was wide variation in its practice. The eleventh to the thir- teenth centuries, a time of especially great religious ferment, saw the growth of a num- ber of movements seeking to reform monastic practice, to make it more ascetic, more “true” to the Regula Benedicti. In the early thirteenth century, the Franciscan and Domini- can Friars were the agents of reform, and many historians see the Friars as a watershed in the history of religious life in the Middle Ages. Yet when Francis of Assisi was only eleven years old, when the creation of the Franciscan life was barely an idea, monasticism in Burgundy experienced another reform. This was the foundation of the Caulite Order. The Caulites founded their first monastery in 1193, roughly a century after the advent of the Cistercians, barely two decades before the advent of the Franciscans. The order, also referred to as the Valliscaulians, was named for the site of this first monastery in Val-des- Choux or “valley of cabbages,” located in the Châtillon forest, some twelve kilometers southeast of the town of Châtillon-sur-Seine in northwest Burgundy. The most important benefactor of the order was Odo III, duke of Burgundy. The order’s spiritual founder was a certain Viard, sometimes called Guy or Guido, who, according to eighteenth-century mémoires of the order, was a former Carthusian lay brother. -

The Forgotten Templar Old World Knights Templars were men of legend. In their quest to defend truth and justice, these men used their swords and unwavering dedication to secure victories in epic battles burned into the pages of our history books. As modern day Knights, we pride ourselves on presenting the Order, not with a sword, but as a benevolent and brotherly house whose ultimate goals are charity and the never-ending search for light. We still have swords but without the edge. We revel in legends which depict old world Templars being ferocious as the proverbial lions. And they were, indeed. However, there was a duality to their personalities which often goes unmentioned. They had a very complex, self-reflecting and gentile side to them- they could be as meek as a lamb. History repeats itself. The world of the early Templars was in many ways very different from our own modern world; but, as we are witnessing more and more, our worlds are once again becoming eerily similar. Religious extremism, the diluting of Christian morals and unprovoked violence was inflicted upon humanity by radical groups then, just as today where modern day religious extremists, atheism, and “politically correct” bureaucrats are seeking to destroy our world. Sometimes I ponder that perhaps the evil ones are once again testing the resolve of the Templar- with an ancient question. Are we still as meek as a lamb and ferocious as a lion or have we become lamb chops only? The following article is about a sickly Cistercian Monk who would ultimately design and shape a machine capable of unthinkable violence and yet display equal kindness. -

Doccombe Parishscapes Newsletter January 2017 Welcome to our January Parishscapes Newsletter We wish everyone a wonderful new year ahead and our Parishscapes project is set to accelerate in 2017 with a lot planned. In this newsletter we thought we would give you some background history to the story of Thomas Becket so hope you find this interesting and informative. In the meantime our main work has been to continue transcribing and translating the manorial records of Doccombe manor. One group has been working their way through the manorial courts of the reign of Henry VIIth where some interesting references to Charcoal pits in the woods and tin-mining have emerged. The other group have looked at a number of C17th leases of tenancies, but also of the whole manor and the woods. They are following this with some interesting biographical work on the men who leased the manor. We also have some stimulating talks and events coming up. We'll keep you posted as we schedule them - look out for a fascinating evening with Professor Nicholas Vincent below. Becket was a 12th century chancellor and archbishop of Canterbury whose murder resulted in his canonisation. Thomas Becket was born in 1118, the son of a prosperous London merchant. He was well educated first at Merton priory, then in a City of London school, and finally in Paris. -

Foy in Conques - video on docuwat.ch The great abbey of Cluny in Burgundy, France, was founded in 910. The abbey church at Cluny was at 525 feet long, the largest church in Christendom. Cluny prospered under the leadership of a succession of able abbots, chief among them St. Odo (926-44), St. Odilo (994-1049), and Peter the Venerable (1122-57). Numerous other monasteries were founded which were ruled directly from Cluny, so that this part of the Benedictine Order became almost an independent European power. At one time these dependent monasteries and convents numbered nearly a thousand. In the turbulent world of the eleventh and twelfth centuries Cluny was thus both an oasis of order and a political and economic focus. The Abbey was notable for its adherence to the Rule of St. Benedict, a book of precepts written by St. Benedict of Nursia (c. 480-547) for monks living communally under the authority of an abbot. As such it became acknowledged as the leader of western monasticism. -
