An "Official" Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres [Revised 1.0]
Guide to the Spheres An "official" Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres [revised 1.0] By Paul Westermeyer aka GMWestermeyer Table of Contents: Page Section 1 Introduction 2 Phlogiston Navigation 4 Phlogiston Transit Times 4 Where is the Rock of Bral? 6 “Official” Flow Map 7 The Spheres and other Phlogiston Locations 23 ‘Loose’ Planets/Worlds 34 Bibliography: Introduction Spelljammer is a very unique and creative setting, but it is also one of the worst organized settings TSR produced with material is scattered among many different products. This makes it very difficult to find what you are looking for, a problem exasperated by Spelljammer’s status as a ‘connection’ campaign, designed (like Planescape) to connect the ‘big’ three settings, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance. I’ve been working to alleviate this problem by writing guides and indices for those aspects of Spelljammer that are most important for creating a coherent, rational game setting. The first of these guides was An “Official” Spelljammer Timeline, which collated Spelljammer-related historical mentions in published TSR products into a cohesive, coherent timeline that Spelljammer (or Hackjammer) gamemasters could use as the foundation of their own, personalized campaigns. This guide, An “Official” Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres, has a similar purpose. Spelljammer’s iconic center is the Rock of Bral, just as Sigil is the iconic heart of Planescape, Spelljammer’s setting cousin, but Sigil’s location is quite firmly placed at the center of the Plane of Concordant Opposition, metaphorically the heart of the entire Advanced Dungeons and Dragons multiverse. Moreover, the various inner and outer planes are all well mapped in relation to each other, and have been ever since the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player’s Handbook in 1978. -

James Lowder's Games to Gift 2018
JAMES LOWDER’S GAMES TO GIFT 2018 TOP PICK: AZUL PUBLISHER: PLAN B; DESIGNER: MICHAEL KIESLING 2–4 PLAYERS; 8 AND UP; $40 (SUGGESTED RETAIL) In Azul, players are artisans summoned by King Manuel I of Portugal to decorate the Royal Palace of Evora, using the Moorish art of decorative tile. Take turns selecting colored tiles, filling rows on your work board, and then transfer a tile to your section of palace wall. The game ends when the first player completes a horizontal tile row. Scores are based on the display, with points earned for patterns of aligned tiles, number of horizontal and vertical rows, and so on. Azul features simple, elegant rules, but potentially complex choices, as you can select tiles to complete your pattern or to force players choosing after you to select pieces that may go unused and end up costing them points. Gameplay is fast, with the full session taking only 30 to 45 minutes. Earlier this year, Azul won the prestigious Spiel de Jahres for game of the year, to almost no one’s surprise. Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra is a recent reimplementation, with players serving as stained glass window designers. It features translucent pieces in place of the original’s resin tiles and some additional rules. Both versions are wonderful. OTHER GREAT NEW GAMES: Family Games: MAGIC MAZE PUBLISHER: SIT DOWN!; DESIGNER: KASPER LAPP 1–8 PLAYERS; 8 AND UP; $33 2018 was another great year for cooperative games, with the release of the latest installment in Matt Leacock’s Forbidden series, Forbidden Skies. -

JAMES LOWDER’S GAMES TO GIFT 2019 TOP PICK: WINGSPAN PUBLISHER: STONEMAIER; DESIGNER: ELIZABETH HARGRAVE 1–5 PLAYERS; 10 AND UP; $55 (SUGGESTED RETAIL) Competitive birdwatching may not be the first topic that leaps to mind as a winning board game theme, but Elizabeth Hargrave has built a marvelous design around it with Wingspan. The game has players taking on the roles of rival bird enthusiasts who scheme to attract birds of different types to their wildlife preserves. Points are gathered in various ways, from placing birds in the proper habitats to collecting eggs. Resource management becomes important, too, as you try to balance your feed supply with the bird population. There’s a lot going on during play, but the rules are well written, with clear explanations for all card effects. Wingspan is a superior game that will entertain casual gamers and hardcore hobbyists, even while offering up educational content, which is quite a feat. Like many of this year’s picks, it also boasts solo rules for when you can’t get your regular game group together for a session. OTHER GREAT NEW GAMES: Role-Playing Games: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ESSENTIALS KIT PUBLISHER: WIZARDS OF THE COAST; DESIGNERS: RICHARD BAKER, JEREMY CRAWFORD, CHRIS PERKINS, ET AL 2–6 PLAYERS; 12 AND UP; $24.99 Wizards of the Coast already had a perfectly serviceable starter set on the market for the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons, but went back to the design table this year to create the superior Dungeons & Dragons Essentials Kit. This new introduction to the world’s most famous role-playing game features condensed rules, streamlined character creation, a fistful of dice, and a new adventure, but also rules for one-on-one play and access codes for content on D&D Beyond, the game’s online platform. -

I Am, As Ever, Indebted to Visionaries Such As Greg Stafford and Sandy Petersen for the Inspiration to Throw out My DMG and Do My Own Thing
I am, as ever, indebted to visionaries such as Greg Stafford and Sandy Petersen for the inspiration to throw out my DMG and do my own thing. Somehow, however, I circle back to RuneQuest every time. The idea for this scenario broke at the same time as covid hit us. I made a flippant comment on a RQ page online that I had accidently written a scenario about a Malian priest with nineteen broo followers… I’m calling her Kovid. Someone else suggested that I publish it on Jonstown Compendium. Much editing and re-jiggering later, here it is. Her name really isn’t important though as you’ll find out if you read on. Thanks to my ex-employers for making me redundant and giving me the time to write this up and to my wife for forcing me to build an office in the house that made writing this so much easier. The art in this one is either mine or by Mike Hudson, you can tell which is which, his are the good ones. Tabletop Role-Playing Games and the Experience of Imagined
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Texas A&M Repository THE GREATEST UNREALITY: TABLETOP ROLE-PLAYING GAMES AND THE EXPERIENCE OF IMAGINED WORLDS A Dissertation by NICHOLAS J. MIZER Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Tom Green Committee Members, Harris Berger Vaughn Bryant Travis Dubry Head of Department, Cynthia Werner December 2015 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2015 Nicholas J. Mizer ABSTRACT Drawing on four years of participant observation, interviews, and game recordings, this dissertation explores the collaborative experience of imagined worlds in tabletop role- playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. Research on tabletop games has at times been myopic in terms of time depth and geographic scope, and has often obscured the ethnographic realities of gaming communities. This research expands the ethnographic record on tabletop role-playing games and uses a phenomenological approach to carefully examine how gamers at five sites across the United States structure their experience of imagined worlds in the context of a productive tension between enchantment and rationalization. After discussing the history of Dungeons & Dragons in terms of enchantment and rationalization, the dissertation presents three case studies, each exploring a different facet of experience in imagined worlds. At a convention in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, gamers commemorate the life of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax, but also their own childhoods and a sense of a lost, imagined pre-modern world. -

JAMES LOWDER’S GAMES TO GIFT 2014 TOP PICK: KING OF NEW YORK PUBLISHER: IELLO; DESIGNER: RICHARD GARFIELD 2–6 PLAYERS; 10 AND UP; $50 (SUGGESTED RETAIL) Giant monsters battle each other and the military in an epic struggle to conquer Manhattan and be declared king of New York. This game is a sequel of sorts to last year’s fun, but more lightweight King of Tokyo. The mechanics added this time around by designer Richard Garfield open up more opportunities for both strategy and giant monster mayhem. OTHER GREAT NEW GAMES: SUSHI GO! PUBLISHER: GAMEWRIGHT; DESIGNER: PHIL WALKER-HARDING 2–5 PLAYERS; 8 AND UP; $15 In this quick and charming card game, players collect the best combinations of sushi over three rounds. Points are earned from the specific groups of sushi selected, but the card drafting mechanic makes this more than just a luck-of-the-draw affair. It’s easy to get caught up in the fast play each round, but you also need to be mindful of longer-term strategy so you don’t find yourself penalized for having the fewest pudding cards when the game ends and it’s time for dessert. PANDEMIC: THE CURE PUBLISHER: Z-MAN; DESIGNER: MATT LEACOCK 2–5 PLAYERS; 8 AND UP; $50 This dice-based version of the outstanding Pandemic board game has players working cooperatively to battle four diseases plaguing the world. Each player takes a different role, which uses its own set of dice and grants specific abilities, and the team strives together to prevent outbreaks and find cures for each of the four maladies. -
