The Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run o Teenage Rampage.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

Christmas hits: are Slade, Boney M and the Pogues made for life? | Music ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/dec/23/christmas-hits Every December records sell, kerching kerching, but do the artists live happily ever after? Simon Hattenstone guardian.co.uk, Friday 23 December 2011 07.10 EST Noddy Holder, Don Powell, Dave Hill and Jim Lea of Slade perform on a Christmas TV show in December 1973. Photograph: Getty Images. Click on the picture to see those boots... In Nick Hornby's novel About A Boy, Will Freeman never has to work again after his dad wrote a huge Christmas hit. Every December records sell, kerching kerching, radios blast, kerching kerching, adverts carry the song, kerching kerching, and he lives happily ever after. But is it true? Are those lucky enough to have written a classic Christmas hit living in clover? The biggest non-charity Christmas hit in the UK is Mary's Boy Child by Boney M. It's easy to forget how successful Boney M were in the 70s. No other artist has two songs in the UK's all-time top 10 singles chart – Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring at No 5 and Mary's Boy Child at 10. Liz Mitchell, who sang both songs, now performs as "the voice of Boney M". "You must be loaded," I say when we meet. Mitchell, who has been smiling and laughing, looks as if she's about to break into tears when I mention royalties. Has she worked out how much she makes every year from the Christmas single? "If I was to spend time working out what the record company got – and those in that team of people around us – I would lose my mind." It's not only the Christmas single, she says, there's also a Boney M Christmas album.

  • Most Played Christmas Songs in 2011 (USA)
"Sleigh Ride" Tops List of Popular Holiday Classics for Fourth Consecutive Year New York, NY, December 12, 2012: It's that time of year again when holiday music takes over the airwaves and fills our homes, shops and cars with that extra bit of cheer, raising peoples' spirits and inspiring shoppers' zeal for finding that perfect gift. This year, as with many years in the past, the top ten most-played holiday songs were all written or co-written by members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). And for the fourth year in a row, "Sleigh Ride," written by Leroy Anderson and Mitchell Parish, and recently covered by ASCAP Grammy-nominated indie rock trio fun., tops this list of popular holiday classics. Like "Sleigh Ride," many of these perennial favorites continue to be re-recorded by contemporary artists year after year, proving their timelessness and boosting already impressive airplay. "Music is one of the most important and defining aspects of the holiday season. Favorites like 'Sleigh Ride' and 'Winter Wonderland' help to set the mood and brighten spirits each and every year," commented ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams. "It's no surprise that these beloved tunes have all been written by ASCAP members, America's greatest songwriters and composers. These works serve as a cornerstone of the ASCAP repertory." Since October 1, 2012, "Sleigh Ride" has aired more times than any other holiday song this season. Though the lyrical version we know today depicts a wondrous winter scene, "Sleigh Ride" was originally composed by Leroy Anderson as an instrumental piece on a hot summer day in 1946.

Slayed? may have been only the band's second studio album in four years, but it reinforced that barrage with enough mighty stompers that the band could have taken the next year off and still not run out of steam. Even if one excises past hits "Gudbuy t' Jane" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" from the equation, Slayed? is a nonstop party, from the riotously self-fulfilling prophecy of "The Whole World's Goin' Crazee" to the down-key but still eminently stompalong-able "Look at Last Nite," the latter a reminder that, even at its loudest, Slade was still capable of some fetching balladry.
