E-mail: [email protected] In 1974, the lofty ambition of a BBC drama producer to manufacture a ‘prestige’ international hit along the lines of Elizabeth R (BBC2, 1971) came unstuck. In this case study, the authors consider the plight of Churchill’s People (BBC1, 1974-75) during a time of economic strife in the UK and industrial unrest at the BBC, and ask how a series which combined so many skilled writers, directors and actors could result in such a poorly-received end product. Churchill’s People is also placed in a wider context to assess its ‘neglected’ status, the authors drawing parallels with other historical drama of the era. The series’ qualification for being ‘forgotten’ is considered in relation to its struggle in the ratings against strong competition, the ‘blacking out’ by unions of production at the BBC for eight weeks and the subsequent pressures on transmission times, prompting the authors’ consideration of a more qualified definition of ‘lost’ drama, i.e. -

Life of Wonder is Miles better Page 1 of 2 Life of Wonder is Miles better By npowlson damon parkin [email protected] HE was the snarling frontman whose lyrics served as a caustic commentary on the “loadsamoney” generation. “Forget your heart, it's your bank I want to break,” sang Miles Hunt, lead singer of The Wonder Stuff, on the band's breakthrough single It's Yer Money I'm After Baby. Clever, witty, often cynical but always an entertaining live act, The Wonder Stuff enjoyed a string of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including Size of a Cow, Welcome to the Cheap Seats and, with Vic Reeves, the No 1 hit Dizzy. But with triumph came trauma – creative tensions forcing the band to split in 1994 and, again, a decade later – and tragedy: the deaths of former band members Bob “The Bass Thing” Jones and Martin Gilks. Miles and fellow founder member Malcolm Treece – the band were formed in Stourbridge, West Midlands, in 1986 – are joined by the current line-up for a gig at Derby's The Venue next Friday. Local band Fideal Effect are the support act. “The Venue is a terrific setting,” says 41-year-old Miles, who performed an acoustic show at the Abbey Street club with The Wonder Stuff's violinist Erica Nockalls earlier this year. “It's big enough to generate a good atmosphere and small enough so the audience can see the whites of our eyes.” Miles has performed at a number of Derby venues over the past 25 years, with The Wonder Stuff and as the drummer in an early line-up of cult indie band Pop Will Eat Itself. -

Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era. -
