Today, his descendants still own the company, which employs around 100 people, produces 4 million knives per year and sells to 70 countries across the world. The easily - recognisable Opinel folding knife is acknowledged as one of the best knives in the world. The Victoria and Albert Museum lists the Opinel pocket knife as being among the 100 best designs in the world, placing it with icons such as the Porsche 911 and the Rolex watch. In 2006 the Opinel pocket knife was recognised as one of the 999 most successful designs of all times by a jury of international designers in the ‘Phaidon Design Classics’. 3 TRADITIONAL RANGE The traditional Opinel pocket knife is available in 10 sizes, each size being marked on the collar of the knife. Opinel sizes from 6 to 12 have a Virobloc safety system on the collar, which twists to lock the blade into the open or closed position. OPINEL CARBON STEEL The carbon steel blade has an exceptional cutting quality and is very easy to sharpen. The carbon steel blade has a light smear of lanolin on it when it leaves the factory to protect it from moisture. The blade must be wiped clean from fingerprints and washed and dried after use. The blade will darken in time (hence carbon steel is often called black steel), but in no way will this impinge on the cutting quality of the knife. Both the blade and the handle is stamped with “Opinel Carbone’ to distinguish it from the Stainless Steel knife. 111020 No 2 – 3.5cm blade 111030 No 3 – 4cm blade 111040 No 4 – 5cm blade 111050 No 5 – 6cm blade 113060 6 VRN – 7cm blade 113070 7 VRN – 8cm blade 113080 8 VRN – 8.5cm blade 113090 9 VRN – 9cm blade 113100 10 VRN – 10cm blade 113120 12 VRN – 12cm blade 183102 Collectors set - wooden lid, 1 of each size - No 2 - 12 000739 182085 183104 Counter Display box 30 knives Wall panel 12 knives Display case, glass lid 6xNo 6, 6xNo 7, 12xNo 8, 6xNo 9 4 each No 6, 7 and 8 1 of each size - No 2 - 12 OPINEL SHARPENING 001541 001540 001128 Natural quarry stone for sharpening, Natural quarry stone, Sharpening steel 7.5cm suit Tawonga 10cm, boxed 24cm, boxed pouches 4 OPINEL STAINLESS STEEL The traditional Opinel pocket knife is also available in 10 different sizes with a stainless steel blade. We had three Gerber folding knives, enhanced ibdennis with engraving on ivory micarta handles, presented in Someone recently asked me to recall and write the beginning a custom wood box. These were given to the three best of the Oregon Knife Collectors Association (OKCA). It was displays at the Show. The attendance was around 500 with 1975 when a group of knife minded people gathered to see if it a door admission of $1.00. was feasible to have a knife show on the West Coast. We had monthly meetings in the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) utilities basement here in Eugene, Oregon, once a month on Saturdays which was attended by Oregonians mostly. We called ourselves the “Emerald Empire Blade Collectors Association.” Long about the first of 1976, we modified our name to “Emerald Empire Knife Collectors.” I think this happened as most of the public had no idea what a “blade” was. The only knife shows that were available were in conjunction with gun shows held in the area. It was always a travel-to-a destination. The big shows were even more unavailable, greater distances. How about a show in our area was the question? Something like, ”If Mohammed can’t go to the mountain, then bring the mountain to Mohammed.” It was this drive that suggested that I would promote the interest of collectable cutlery and Wayne Goddard would promote the area of knifemaking.

Damascus steel For Damascus Twist barrels, see Skelp. For the album of blades, and research now shows that carbon nanotubes the same name, see Damascus Steel (album). can be derived from plant fibers,[8] suggesting how the Damascus steel was a type of steel used in Middle East- nanotubes were formed in the steel. Some experts expect to discover such nanotubes in more relics as they are an- alyzed more closely.[6] The origin of the term Damascus steel is somewhat un- certain; it may either refer to swords made or sold in Damascus directly, or it may just refer to the aspect of the typical patterns, by comparison with Damask fabrics (which are in turn named after Damascus).[9][10] 1 History Close-up of an 18th-century Iranian forged Damascus steel sword ern swordmaking. These swords are characterized by dis- tinctive patterns of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. Such blades were reputed to be tough, re- sistant to shattering and capable of being honed to a sharp, resilient edge.[1] Damascus steel was originally made from wootz steel, a steel developed in South India before the Common Era. The original method of producing Damascus steel is not known. Because of differences in raw materials and man- ufacturing techniques, modern attempts to duplicate the metal have not been entirely successful. Despite this, several individuals in modern times have claimed that they have rediscovered the methods by which the original Damascus steel was produced.[2][3] The reputation and history of Damascus steel has given rise to many legends, such as the ability to cut through a rifle barrel or to cut a hair falling across the blade,.[4] A research team in Germany published a report in 2006 re- vealing nanowires and carbon nanotubes in a blade forged A bladesmith from Damascus, ca.

  • 1. How Should I Look After My Opinel Knife ? Avoid Leaving It in Damp Environments for Too Long
    1. How should I look after my Opinel knife ? Avoid leaving it in damp environments for too long. Grease the metal parts regularly. Dry the blade using a dry cloth after each use. 2. How do you sharpen an Opinel knife ? Use an Opinel fine‐grain natural stone on a dry, degreased blade. As if you wanted to cut the stone, move the blade from the base towards the tip, at an angle of 18/20 degrees. A wide angle will thicken the cutting edge: it will be more resistant but less sharp. A small angle will thin the cutting edge: it will be less resistant but sharper. A burr forms on the opposite side of the blade. Remove this by passing this side over the stone, without pressing. To finish off, pass both sides over the stone, twice. 3. Can I put my Opinel knife in the dishwasher ? Folding knives are not designed to be washed in the dishwasher. You can wash them by hand, being careful never to leave them soaking in the water and to dry and grease them properly afterwards. Fixed‐ blade kitchen knives with stainless steel blades can be put in the dishwasher. Make sure you use washing and rinsing products from the same brand. Place your knife in the cutlery basket with the blade downwards. Once the washing cycle has finished, dry your knife and put it away. 4. What is the difference between a carbon blade and a stainless steel blade ? The carbon blade has an unparalleled cutting quality and sharpens very easily.
