We called ourselves the “Emerald Empire Blade Collectors Association.” Long about the first of 1976, we modified our name to “Emerald Empire Knife Collectors.” I think this happened as most of the public had no idea what a “blade” was. The only knife shows that were available were in conjunction with gun shows held in the area. It was always a travel-to-a destination. The big shows were even more unavailable, greater distances. How about a show in our area was the question? Something like, ”If Mohammed can’t go to the mountain, then bring the mountain to Mohammed.” It was this drive that suggested that I would promote the interest of collectable cutlery and Wayne Goddard would promote the area of knifemaking. We talked about doing a two day Show, and a search began to locate a place to hold the event. Portland was the prime consideration; however distance for the organizer (me), and the high cost of the Portland facilities were discouraging. So it was decided to hold it in Eugene on May 15-16, 1976. It was also decided to change our name one more time to include the state of Oregon rather than the city or area. The Show was held at the Lane County Fairgrounds in the Pioneer Building. The Pioneer building was torn down in 1978. That May Show proved that we could make a Knife Show happen in Eugene. In September of 1976, we drew up a Charter and promoted the organization at a September gun show. I had capped out all my credit cards prior to the May 1976 Show and doing that for future shows was not something I wanted to do. ( I did get my monies back, but zero profit for me.) I wrote an article about the Moby Dick kitchen knife and still have a few of these I use in the kitchen. This also included the display counter die cut card. I also collected a Remington kitchen knife display case full of larger kitchen knives which I passed on to my friend Rich. He was kind enough to return the Remington 7 inch CHEF knife to me at the 2017 OKCA Show, as I have always enjoyed its stylish look (Picture 1). I acquired this knife over 15 years ago at the Show and have yet to see another 7 inch or 8 inch CHEF knife in any condition. Needless to say I am still looking for an 8 inch one. If you browse through the Remington catalogues, the kitchen knife appears during the Dupont era; and, by 1939 and the C39 catalogue, the pages with pictures expanded from a few kitchen knives to 15 starting at Page 51 and ending at Page 65. Quite an expansion of models, sizes and groupings over a few years, for sure. It surprises me that we do not see more of these; but maybe there were so many models and variations purchasers could not make a decision on what to get.
