The trobairitz were Occitan women troubadours, active from around 1170to ap- proximately 1260. The trobairitz repertory provides unique material on about from the High Middle Ages allowing the study of women’s conceptions, values and ways of thinking can be studied. In this study, these characteristics are compared with the socio-poetic code of male troubadours and with the other contemporaryOccitanliterature. In their poetry, the trobairitz manifest values like sincerity, trust, merit, honour, andgoodreputation. These qualities can be consideredas representa tions of feudal and courtly culture andrelatedto the contemporary discussion of being noble in bloodor noble in heart which derives from the development and the enclosure of aristocracy. The same values are articulated in the vidas (biographies) andrazos (commentaries) that introduce trobairitz in anumber of manuscripts. In addition, the very favourable attitude towards educational or intellectual values is associated with poetic skills and with the needs of court social life. All these values articulate trobairitz’ social roles as aristocratic ladies, domnas, as sources of poetic inspiration and patronesses of the male trouba doursbutalsoaspoetic“high-style”song-makerswhoweredistinguishedfrom the lower class andlower-style female musicians. The significance of reputation seems to be gendered in a way that a decent reputation might have helped women’s poetry survive. For men,on the other hand, any reputation (goodor bad)wassufficient. As for the affective level of the poetry, the study shows that the trobairitz use the same emotional register (love, joy, suffering) as their male counterparts, which supports the hypothesis that the women troubadours were well inte- gratedintothepoeticcultureofOccitantroubadours. University ofArizona Tucson,AZ85721 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Medieval troubadours, andmy doctoral studies in general, have been engaging andbrought me contacts with scholars near andfar. I am grateful to my Profes- sors Jorma O. Tiainen and Jorma Ahvenainen at the Department of History (University of Jyväskylä) for their favourable attitude to the historical study of women troubadours. They encouraged me to pursue my studies further after my graduate studies, andthey have shown continuous trust andinterest in my work. I was particularly lucky to have two leading (and almost the only in Finland!) Occitanists in Jyväskylä:first,I hadthe honour of familiarising myself with Occitan studies with Professor Aimo Sakari († 2001) and after him, with Professor Outi Merisalo. I am immensely grateful to Professor Merisalo, my thesis supervisor, who broadmindedly sent me to Rome (in 19971998) where I passedthe European Diplomafor Medieval Studies (Fédération Internationale des Instituts d’Études Médiévales) and who has ever since encouraged and supportedmethrougheverystepoftheprocess:merces, merces! As apost-graduate student studying pre-modern times,I continuedto be fortunate, since Professor Juha Sihvola came to our department and took me under his wing.As my thesis supervisor, his virtues have been patience,toler- ance, and generosity - efcharistó! Thanks to Professor Sihvola,I have also been privileged to study within two projects funded by the Academy of Finland: “Hoping for continuity, facing oblivion.Childhood, education anddeath in An- tiquity andthe Middle Ages”,directedby Docent KatariinaMustakallio, who convincedme of the significance of the “passages”between Antiquity andthe Middle Ages andthe same dialogue between those two eras has been continu- ing within the research unit “Philosophical psychology, morality andpolitics”, directedby Professor Simo Knuuttila. The project’s Medieval philosophy team has been ledby Professors Mikko Yrjönsuuri andTaneli Kukkonen, who very generously have made efforts to familiarise me with ancient and medieval phi- losophy as well as all the members of the group – gratias ago! Shukran! Besides the Academy of Finland, this publication has been made possible with the fi- nancial assistance of the Cultural Foundation of Finland, the Ellen andArtturi NyyssönenFoundation, andtheFinnishConcordiaFund. Iwouldliketothank myreviewersProfessorAlbrechtClassenandDocent Marko Lamberg for offering their time to my manuscript andfor their insight- ful andlearnedcomments on it – Vielen Danke! Tack så mycket! I am also grateful toProfessorClassenforacceptingthedutyof the opponent. Professor Pasi Ihalainen and Dr. Sari KatajalaPeltomaa have also com- mentedandsharedtheir thoughts on one or more of chapters of this study.Dr. Jean-Yves Malherbe deserves special thanks for proofreading the French in the manuscript – merci beaucoup! The maps of the troubadour and the trobairitz courts are drawn by Jari Järvinen.I am indebtedto Professors Toivo Nygård, Petri Karonen, andJari Ojala, the former andpresent Heads of the Department History andEthnology,as well as to Professor of General History,Seppo Zet- terberg, who have providedme with optimal working conditions in Jyväskylä – aitäh!
