1 “Transnational Cooperation is an indispensable prerequisite to address challenges in tourism and transport – as touristic and transport activities are transnational as well. Mountainous Areas are affected more strongly, so we set a focus to these sensitive regions within ACCESS2MOUNTAIN. Developing sustainable transport solutions is also about destroying boundaries and starting to cooperate.” Günther Lichtblau, Environment Agency Austria (Lead Partner) Sustainable Mobility and Tourism in Sensitive Areas of the Alps and the Carpathians 2 Preface Andrä Rupprechter Austrian Federal Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management I have a clear objective: Austria is to be a country with a high quality of life. Pure air, diversity in nature, clean water and high-quality foodstuffs make Austria a liveable country and attract numerous guests. Tourism produces about 5% of the world’s total CO2 emissions. Tourism is, therefore, one of causes of climate change and, on the other hand, it is also affected by it. One of the major sources of emissions associated with tourism is photo source: BMLFUW / photonews.at transport, especially transport by car – as the car is the most frequently used mode of transport for travelling to and departing from tourist destinations. Air pollutants, noise and human interference with the natural landscape have a profound impact on the fauna and flora of sensitive regions such as mountain areas, and they have a major impact on human health. Austria attaches particular importance to the protection of these sensitive areas. Therefore, and because mobility is by its very nature a transregional matter, a transnational approach is required. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management has initiated and supported transnational projects which are aimed at the implementation of environment-friendly and sustainable solutions in tourist regions, such as ACCESS2MOUNTAIN, for several years.

  • Reichel LIFELINES Walter Reichel’S Lifework Is Closely Linked with the Development of the Rail and Generator Businesses of Siemens
Walter Reichel LIFELINES Walter Reichel’s lifework is closely linked with the development of the rail and generator businesses of Siemens. He is as intimately associated with the legendary high-speed train with three-phase loco- motives as he is with the design of gener- ators and large motors. He was quickly entrusted with tasks of great responsi- bility, both at home and abroad, and he interrupted his Siemens career for two years in to accept a position as a regular professor of electrical engineering in Berlin. Unfazed by the political upheaval of his time, Reichel was passionate about railway electrifi cation and the further development of electrical engineering as a separate fi eld of study at Germany universities. The brochure is the seventh volume in the LIFELINES series, which presents portraits of individuals who have shaped the history and development of Siemens in a wide variety of ways. This includes entrepreneurs who have led the company and members of the Managing Board as well as engineers, inventors, and creative thinkers. Walter Reichel 2 Walter Reichel January , – May , LIFELINES Gibt es das Bild als Scan? Ist aus Buch fotografiert, dabei verzerrt und unscharf! The Siemens engineer – Walter Reichel, 1907 Walter Reichel – An engineer with courage and vision Introduction Walter Reichel was the hero of many a wild tale, some of which were still circulating at Siemens in the 1950s. One was especially popular: During one of the company’s test runs for the Research Association for HighSpeed Electric Railways, Reichel, a Siemens engineer and later a university professor, had himself lashed not just on top of the highspeed car, but underneath it as well, so he could observe how the current collector and the wheel bearings performed while the car was in motion.

  • COLOMBO SUBURBAN RAILWAY PROJECT (CSRP) - an Ambitious Project
COLOMBO SUBURBAN RAILWAY PROJECT (CSRP) - an ambitious Project Feasable and applicable technical Solutions Current State of Sri Lanka Railway`s Affairs on Kelani Valley Rail-Track Feasable and applicable technical Solutions presented by Dr. Frank Wingler, September 2018 1a Synopsis: The project is aiming to create more demand for commuter rail transport by providing modern high capacity and rapid urban and suburban rail transport facilities. Electrification of the sector Panadura-Veyangoda will become exorbitant expensive. The capital investment costs will stand in no economical relation to the savings gathered by running only the fraction of short distance trains by electric propulsion. Sri Lanka has not enough reliable power supply with enough redundancy to guarantee an un-interrupted electricity supply. The Colombo Suburban Railway Project (CSRP) and the Colombo Suburban Efficiency Improvement Project should therefore concentrate to bring the existing tracks in sound and healthy condition with a quality matching with an increased traffic load and speed. This will mean to go for a comprehensive track substructure rehabilitation, strengthening and broadening, to increase the route-capacity through a more favourable track layout with modern state-of-the-art technology for turnouts and crossings (especially in the corridor Fort and Maradana), and through a less complicated signalling system with train protection allowing shorter headways. The rolling stocks have to be better serviced repairrd and maintained as well the train brake systems. For this much more capacity has to be provided as presently available. With the provision of a reliable Mass Rapid Transit, MRT, System in the densely populated KV-corridor the share of commuter rail-ridership will increase, and this will create a higher demand for rail transport.
