It takes as its starting point the history of the revival harpsichord in the early part of the century, how the instrument affected both performance of historic music and the composition of modern music and the factors that contributed to its decline. -

THE SOLO PIANO WORKS OF ALEXANDER MÜLLENBACH: AN INTRODUCTION AND APPROACH TO PERFORMANCE D.M.A. DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For The Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Ryan Joseph Behan, B.M., M.M., M.A. ***** 2009 Document Committee: Dr. Caroline Hong, Advisor Approved by Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt Dr. Robin Rice _____________________________ Advisor, Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Ryan Joseph Behan 2009 ABSTRACT Alexander Müllenbach (b.1949 in Luxembourg) is a prodigiously gifted and award-winning composer whose life and versatile career in music may inspire the reader, and whose fascinatingly original works for piano warrant thorough study. The performing artist carries the responsibility to effectively communicate the composer’s music to the audience through an edified, inspired, and creative performance approach. Through examination of his piano compositions, and by communicating directly with the composer about his life and work through interview, I hope to enable such an achievement. I initially learned of Müllenbach through performances of his compositions during my graduate studies at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he serves as Professor of Composition. My research consisted of an interview with the composer and exploration of his compositional world as revealed through his published and unpublished works for piano, which include: Three Winter Pieces, Preludes and Fugues, Night Music, Unter dem Regenbogen, and To B (or not…). It is my hope that this document will promote further study and enjoyment of Müllenbach’s compositions so they may thrive in institutions of higher learning and in the concert hall, and that it may play a vital role in promoting modern art music in the classical performing tradition for students and pianists of future generations. -

She emigrated to the USA in 1940, completed her general schooling, and then started studying composition with Paul Boepple, piano with Helen Schnabel and organ with Carl Weinrich. After graduating from Bennington College, she returned to Paris in 1946 to continue her studies with Darius Milhaud, Simone Plé- Caussade and Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire. A prizewinner at the Besançon International Conducting Competition (1953), she has since won many awards from organizations including the Copley Founda tion of Chicago (1954), ORTF (1961), the American Academy of Arts (1973) and the Koussevitsky Foundation (1974), in addition to winning the Grand Prix Na tional de la Musique (1974), Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris (1981) and SACEM Grand Prix (1982). -

PETER LANG (Austria) The pianist Peter Lang, born in Lambach/Austria in 1946, received his first music lessons from his father, the organist and choir director Hermann Lang. This was followed by musical studies with Kurt Neumüller, Bernhard Paumgartner, Kurt Overhoff and Gerhard Wimberger at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, as well as with Friedrich Gulda and Géza Anda. His concert career began in 1955 and at the age of 15 Peter Lang performed with the Camerata Salzburg under Bernhard Paumgartner. In 1965 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival. As a soloist, he has worked with outstanding orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo and performed in all major music centers around the world. He organised chamber concerts with Ruggiero Ricci and the Ensemble Wien- Berlin. During the Salzburg Mozart Weeks, he worked with Claudio Abbado, Kiri Te Kanawa and Walter Levin. In 1978 he was appointed to the Mozarteum University Salzburg as a professor for piano. From 1979 to 2002 Peter Lang headed the keyboard instruments department at the Mozarteum and in 1985 founded the interdisciplinary "Musical Academies", which he headed until 1995. Since 1980 he has been teaching master classes in Europe, the USA and the Far East. In addition to his concert and teaching activities, he acts as a juror in international, highly regarded competitions in Europe, the USA, Japan and Russia, at the Salzburg International Mozart Competition since 1982 and at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1998 and 2007.
