The Exterminating Angel In-Class presentation (5% of final grade) Due 2:20pm in class, November 7th. We will meet in our regular classroom. The class is randomly divided into groups. You may switch places in groups if you wish but group numbers must stay between 3-4 participants. Each group will deliver a 5-minute lecture on a particular theme in preparation for a screening of the 1968 film and its 2016 opera adaptation The Exterminating Angel. Group 1: Luis Bunuel’s life and times 1900- 1945 (Gazi, Sreejan, Gabriella Vetrano) Your five-minute lecture will set the stage for the rest of the class, and will tell us who Luis Buñuel was. It should cover the main historical and political events of the first 45 years of the director’s life. Present the events relevant to the time and place in which he lived at the time, and how these affected his life and work. You can include the works he created during these pivotal years, but you should focus on the general historical and political environment he lived in. Group 2: Luis Buñuel’s life and times 1945- 1983 (Favour, Boubacar, Darya, Fiona Crisp) Your five-minute lecture will set the stage for the rest of the class, and will tell us who Luis Buñuel was. It should cover the main historical and political events of the last 42 years of the director’s life. Present the events relevant to the time and place in which he lived at the time, and how these affected his life and work. You can include the works he created during these pivotal years, but you should focus on the general historical and political environment he lived in. Group 3: Buñuel and Dali: Un Chien Andalou 1929 (Christina, Cien, Nazia, Kana) Your five-minute lecture should cover all or most of the following topics: Who is Salvador Dali? What are some of his iconic artworks? (show 3-5 images and give some background about each one) How did Buñuel and Dali meet? What was the process of making Un Chien Andalou? Show an excerpt of the film What was the reception of the film at the time? (Read or show quotes of reviews and responses) How is the film considered today? (Read or show quotes of reviews, articles, or homages) Group 4: The Late films of Luis Buñuel (Portia, Gabriela Ovalles, Jeff) Your five-minute lecture should cover the following films: “Simon of The Desert” (1965) and “Belle de Jour” (1969), Relevant topics include: plot, critical response and discourse, short excerpts from the films (no more than 2.5 minutes total) and a comparison to other films popular at the time. Group 5: The Late films of Luis Buñuel (Katherine, Jannatul, Sam, Fionna Du) Your five-minute lecture should cover the following films: ''The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie'' (1972) and ''That Obscure Object of Desire'' (1977). Relevant topics include: plot, critical response and discourse, short excerpts from the films (no more than 2.5 minutes total) and a comparison to other films popular at the time. Group 6: The Exterminating Angel (Max, Rita, Maryam) Your five-minute lecture should cover the plot, critical response, and theoretical analysis of the film “The Exterminating Angel”. Show some film-stills that depict the main imagery and ideas in it. Read aloud or show the most interesting critical response you could find. Your lecture should act as a guide to the group that is about to see the film. What should we look for? What are the interesting metaphors or ideas in the work? Requirements: 1. Each lecture must last exactly 5 minutes. Rehearse your timings to make sure you hit your mark! 2. Each lecture must be accompanied by 5-20 relevant images/graphics, see technical instructions below. 3. Workload division: make sure the work is divided equally within the group. Tasks include: research, script writing, image preparation, and class presentation Technical requirements 1. Your presentation must include 5-20 jpegs. They must be 72dpi, and large enough to be viewed well on a large screen (around 1000-2000 pixels wide). Click here for tips on searching for large images online. 2. Bring your images to class on a thumb-drive. 3. Name your files with group name and in order of appearance. For example: the first group will title its files like this: Group1_01.jpeg, Group1_02.jpeg, Group1_03.jpeg, etc. Group 6 will title its files: Group6_01.jpeg, Group6_02.jpeg, Group6_03.jpeg) 4. I recommend combining speaking freely with some written/printed bullet points but you may also read your presentation from a prepared text. Email me with any questions. .
