Welcome to the 2009 joint annual meeting of the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society and the Association for the Study of Food and Society! The theme of our conference this year—“Informing Possibilities for the Future of Food and Agriculture”—has only become more relevant since it was first settled upon about a year ago. As the administrations of national governments have changed, as economies at a multitude of scales experience strains and generate hardships not seen in decades, as more people actively recognize and respond to the social and environmental crises that cross‐cut our local places and global relations in the 21st century, we need to come together, now perhaps more than ever, to share our research findings, our intellectual insights and our practical ideas about the future of food and agriculture. This is precisely what will happen in dizzying abundance over the two‐and‐a‐half days of the 2009 AFHVS/ASFS conference. We hope you enjoy the conference. We welcome you to Penn State University, to the borough of State College, and to the beautiful wooded hills and farms of Central Pennsylvania! We encourage you to take a walking tour of at least some of the 7,200 acre campus with over 14,064 trees including 224 historic stately elm trees. The pedestrian‐friendly campus is beautifully landscaped with perennial flowers, shrubs, and trees and the spring is an excellent time to take in the sights. During your walk, you might want to sample the ice cream at the Berkey Creamery or stroll down Curtin Road to the Palmer Art Museum. Adjacent to the campus, downtown State College is also pedestrian‐friendly with plenty of restaurants and shops. For good local coffee shops, try Saints, The Cheese Shop, or Websters. For good beer and/or music, check out Ottos, Zenos, or Elk Creek Café (in Millheim). If you get a chance to get out to the countryside, travel to nearby Belleville or Aaronsburg to visit Amish farms and shops (which are not touristy). For hikers or walkers, try Black Moshannon State Park, Bald Eagle State Park, or the many mountain trails behind Tussey Mountain. Over the last 26 years, the White Dog Café has become a model enterprise, known nationally for its community involvement, environmental stewardship, responsible business practices, and leadership in the local food movement. White Dog has purchased sustainably grown produce from local family farmers for more than 20 years, and is committed to purchasing only humanely and naturally raised animal products and sustainably harvested fish. Many imported ingredients, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon are certified fair trade. White Dog practices include recycling and composting, solar hot water, eco‐friendly soaps and office supplies, and purchasing 100% of electricity from renewable sources, the first business in Pennsylvania to do so. In January 2009, Judy sold the majority interest in White Dog Café, through an innovative exit strategy that preserves the values and socially responsible business practices through a “social contact.” In 2001, Judy co‐founded the nationwide Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), now with 65 local networks in the US and Canada. That same year she founded the Philadelphia Fair Food Project and the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia, the local BALLE network, now with over 400 business members. Co‐author of White Dog Café Cookbook: Multicultural Recipes and Tales of Adventure from Philadelphia’s Revolutionary Restaurant, Judy is currently working on a new book, Good Morning, Beautiful Business, to be published by Chelsea Green in 2010. 4 2009 AFHVS/ASFS Conference Informing Possibilities for the Future of Food and Agriculture PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESSES AFHVS President Gilbert W. Gillespie, Cornell University “The steering question” Saturday, May 30, 2009 1:30‐3:15 p.m. Dean’s Hall ( Main Level) Gilbert Gillespie holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Cornell University and has been a Senior Lecturer and Senior Research Associate in the Department of Development Sociology at Cornell. Both as a researcher and a social movement participant, he has focused on more civic forms of local food system social “infrastructure,” including farmers’ markets, small‐scale food processors, start‐up farms, and organizations supporting agriculture and food based community development. His recent research projects have included a study on developing community capacity through developing indicators of agricultural viability. He has taught undergraduate courses in “agriculture, food, and society,” “environment and society,” and “comparative social inequalities.” These courses have been a vehicle for helping students to grasp the important interrelations between societies and ecosystems, properly conceived together as socio‐ecosystems. ASFS President Fabio Parasecoli, New York University “Shared meals and other delectable symptoms: Ruminations on the concept of food community” Saturday, May 30, 2009 1:30‐3:15 p.m. Dean’s Hall ( Main Level) Fabio Parasecoli lives between Rome and New York City, where he writes about food and gastronomy both as a journalist and as an academic. His research focuses on the intersection of food, politics, and communication. He teaches in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health at New York University. He also collaborates with other institutions, such as the University of Illinois Champaign‐Urbana, Hohenheim Universität in Stuttgart, l’Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona, and the University of Gastronomic Studies in Italy.     Assignment 3 1/21/2015 The University of Wollongong School of Computer Science and Software Engineering CSCI124/MCS9124 Applied Programming Spring 2010 Assignment 3 (worth 6 marks) • Due at 11.59pm Thursday, September 9 (Week 7). Aim: Developing programs with dynamic memory and hashing. Requirements: This assignment involves the development of a database for a cinema. The program is designed to look up past movie releases, determining when the film was released, the rating it received from the Classification Board and its running time. To accelerate the lookup, a hash table will be used, with two possible hash functions. The program will report how efficiently the table is operating. Storage will be dynamic, enabling the space used by the program to be adjusted to suit the datafile size. The program must clean up after memory usage. During development, the program may ignore the dynamic nature until the program is working. As an addendum, the assignment also involves the use of compiler directives and makefiles. Those students who use a platform other than Linux/Unix will be required to ensure that their programs comply with the specifications below. The program is to be implemented in three files: ass3.cpp contains the simplest form of main function, hash.h contains the function prototypes of the publicly accessible functions, where the implementations of these functions will be placed in the file hash.cpp. The first two files should not be altered, although you may write your own driver programs to test your functions during development. The third file contains the stubs of the four public functions, plus a sample struct for holding the records, usable until they are changed for dynamic memory.

    6 FEBRUARY 2001 (III:4) LUIS BUÑUEL (Luis Buñuel Portolés, 22 February 1900, Calanda, Spain—29 July 1983, Mexico City, Mexico,cirrhosis of the liver) became a controversial and internationally-known filmmaker with his first film, the 17-minute Un Chien andalou 1929 (An Andalousian Dog), which he made with Salvador Dali. He wrote and directed 33 other films, most of them interesting, man y of them considered master pieces by critics and by fellow filmmaker s. Some of them are : Cet obscur objet du désir 1977 (That Obscure Object of Desire), Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie 1972 (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie), Tristana 1970, La Voie lactée 1969 (The Milky Way), Belle de jour 1967, Simón del desierto 1965 (Simon of the Desert), Viridiana 1961, Nazarín 1958, Subida al cielo 1952 (Ascent to Heaven, Mexican Bus Ride), Los Olvidados 1950 (The Young and the Damned), Las Hurdes 1932 (Land Without Bread ), and L’Âge d'or 1930 (Age of Gold). His autobiography, My Last Sigh (Vintage, New York) was published the year after his death. Some critics say much of it is apocryphal, the screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (who collaborated with Buñuel on six scripts), claims he wrote it based on things Buñel said. Whatever: it’s a terrific book. Jones1 Crossing borders: the circulation and reception of non-national European films in Italy2 ABSTRACT This article seeks to explain why some non-national European (NNE) films – i.e. films produced in one European country but released in another (e.g. a French film released in Italy) – are more successful at the Italian box office than others. Drawing on theories about the transnational circulation and reception of films and other media products, along with a range of qualitative and quantitative methods and sources, I compare the cultural and industrial characteristics of ‘successful’ NNE films (i.e. films that achieved 200,000 cinema admissions or more in Italy) with ‘unsuccessful’ NNE films released in the period 2005-15. My analysis reveals that few of the NNE films which succeeded at the Italian box office have characteristics we would expect to find in films that travel well across national borders. Indeed, most are low-budget independent arthouse or middlebrow films with stories that are dialogue-heavy, complex and culturally specific. Nevertheless, these films perform well not only because they appeal to audiences (particularly university graduates) who watch films for their cultural or artistic value, rather than purely for entertainment, but also because these successful arthouse and middlebrow NNE films have other key characteristics which ensure they receive widespread distribution and thus higher audiences. These characteristics include major awards, positive reviews and the involvement of international stars, critically- acclaimed directors, or pre-sold material (e.g. based on a bestselling book). Since most of the NNE films which succeeded at the Italian box office also performed well in other European countries, these findings can be applied to other national contexts.

    Film for thought – Nazarin. In Luke 9:23 we read: Then he [Jesus] said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Alongside Akira Kurosawa Luis Bunuel is my favourite film director who died in 1983 at the age of 83. He was in the Surrealist Movement which started in the 1920’s, was centred in Paris and was led by Andre Breton. Bunuel spent time with these people and made two films with the artist Salvador Dali. Surrealism was a revolutionary movement that questioned reality through writing and the arts, especially challenging the Bourgeoisie. He left the Surrealist Movement in 1932 after joining the Communist Party in Spain; he felt the two were incompatible. During the Spanish Civil War, when people drove around Madrid with bed mattresses tied to their car roofs so as to avoid being shot by a sniper, Bunuel marched the streets dressed as a high ranking officer barking orders at bewildered soldiers. Or he would dress as a Nun (bear in mind that he had a heavy moustache) and ordered soldiers around as well – they did what they were told. He made films in Spain (1932-37), then America (1938-45) and in Mexico (1946-1965) before returning to Spain from where he had previously been banned entry. His films ran on a tight budget and needed to be turned around in as little as 30 days. Therefore, very few of them run over ninety minutes. One, “Simon of the desert”, only lasts forty-five minutes as the money ran out.
