Even if its members look back and suffer anxious regret at their choice of How Green Was My Valley , that doesn ' t mean they were wrong. They can ' t be wrong . It ' s not everyone else ' s opinion that matters, but the Academy ' s. Mulling over the movies of 1941, the Acade my rejected Citizen Kane . Perhaps they resented Orson Welles ' s arrogant ways and unprecedented creative power. Maybe they thought the film too experimental. Maybe the vote was split between Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon , both pioneering in their F ilm Noir flavor. Or they may not have seen the film at all since it was granted such limited release as a result of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst ' s threats to RKO. Nobody knows, and it doesn ' t matter. Academy members can ' t be forced to vote for the film they like best. Their biases and political calculations can ' t be dissected. To subject the Academy to such scrutiny would be impossible and unfair. It ' s the Academy ' s awards, not ours. -

World War II Meets French 331: Using Au revoir les enfants to Discuss Religion, Ethics, and Values _________________________________ Laura Dennis-Bay University of the Cumberlands Williamsburg, Kentucky Abstract This paper examines the treatment of religious and ethical themes in relation to the holocaust in Louis Malle’s film Au revoir les enfants, and suggests ways in which the film can enable discussion of religion, ethics and values in the French classroom.The film raises issues of philosophical and spiritual significance as it forces the viewer to grapple with some of the most atrocious events in human history. “Can we watch a movie?” Many college foreign language profes- sors hear all too often some variation of this refrain. Whatever the response, it seems that more often than not, the request is followed by something like “my high school teacher let us watch Beauty and the Beast in French.” Already suspecting, perhaps fearing the answer, the instructor might re- spond “Oh, the beautiful black and white film by Surrealist director and poet Jean Cocteau?” The answer, too many times, is a perplexed “No, I mean the Disney cartoon,” at which point it’s time to move on. This is not to argue against the use of film in the classroom. In fact, in the past few years I have added an increasing number of films at the Intermediate level and beyond, and even developed an entire course on film adaptations of literary works. Not only do films in the target language en- courage development of linguistic skills, particularly listening, in some cases they also serve as valuable cultural and historical artifacts. -

CZECH CINEMA: NEW WAVE AND BEYOND Coordinators: Robert Gerace and Eva Vogel We survey films from the Czech cinema after WW II, beginning with the German and Soviet Occupations, continuing with the Czech New Wave and the Prague Spring of the 1960’s, and ending with more contemporary films of the modern era. Our materials on Czech and Slovak history and culture provide a framework and context for critical evaluation. We ask which policies and attitudes of the prevailing Soviet and German authorities are satirized in these films? How do the directors attempt to bypass strict censorship of this veiled government criticism? We come to understand the importance of the Czech film industry and how it reflected the historic struggles and aspirations of the citizens of Bohemia and Slovakia. Readings and other Required Materials: Subscription to Netflix is required. Class handouts and Web references will be provided. They include film reviews, director biographies and articles on Czech and Slovak history and culture. Robert has coordinated study groups on Greenwich Village Writers, Italian Neo Realism, and French New Wave Cinema. Eva is an enthusiast of Czech and Slovak films that reflect her family’s experience of the WWII German occupation and her own life during the Soviet occupations after 1968. * * * * * * * * Syllabus * * * * * * * * After viewing the films at home we consider assigned questions about theme, character development, cinematography and director’s style.
