French philosopher, historian, dramatist and man of letters, whose real name was François Marie Arouet simply, was born on the 21st of November 1694 at Paris, and was baptized the next day. His father was François Arouet, a notary; his mother was Marie Marguerite Daumart or D’Aumard. Both father and mother were of Poitevin extraction, but the Arouets had been for two generations established in Paris, the grandfather being a prosperous tradesman. The family appear to have always belonged to the yeoman-tradesman class; their special home was the town of Saint-Loup. Voltaire was the fifth child of his parents—twin boys (of whom one survived), a girl, Marguerite Catherine, and another boy who died young, having preceded him. Not very much is known of the mother, who died when Voltaire was but seven years old. She pretty certainly was the chief cause of his early introduction to good society, the Abbé de Châteauneuf (his sponsor in more ways than one) having been her friend. The father appears to have been somewhat peremptory in temper, but neither inhospitable nor tyrannical. Marguerite Arouet, of whom her younger brother was very fond, married early, her husbands name being Mignot; the elder brother, Armand, was a strong Jansenist, and there never was any kind of sympathy between him and François. The Abbé do Châteauneuf instructed him early in belles lettres and deism, and he showed when a child the unsurpassed faculty for facile verse-making which always distinguished him. -

Review by Elizabeth Cross, Florida State University. Cecil Courtney and Jenny Mander are right to observe in their introduction to this volume that the Abbé Raynal’s Histoire philosophique des deux Indes has indeed come a long way since Gustave Lanson dismissed it as an “oeuvre morte” in 1895 (p. 1). Despite the fluctuating fortunes of the text--from eighteenth-century bestseller, to nineteenth and early twentieth- century oblivion--Raynal is everywhere in eighteenth-century studies now. Work by scholars such as Yves Bénot, Sankar Muthu, and (to a lesser extent) Jennifer Pitts has placed the Histoire des deux Indes in a canon of anti-imperial Enlightenment writings.[1] The Centre international d’étude du XVIIIe siècle is currently publishing a critical edition of the text, of which half of the collaborators on this volume are on the editorial team.[2] The introduction to this book is an essential summary of the current state of the field of Raynal historiography, and it makes clear just how much scholarly work went into the reestablishment of Raynal as an omnipresent figure in studies of the French Enlightenment today. As the editors readily note, the Histoire des deux Indes is not an easily approachable text. -

VOLTAIRE E O LUXO: D’O MUNDANO AO ANTIMUNDANO? Rafael de Araújo e Viana Leite 1 Resumo: Analisaremos alguns textos de Voltaire sobre o luxo, a saber, os poemas apologéticos de 1736/37 assim como textos escritos a partir de 1748 para tentar defender uma interpretação diferente daquela de René Pomeau sobre o tema. Teria Voltaire mudado de opinião sobre o luxo? Palavra chave: Voltaire – Pomeau – Luxo – Moral – Costumes. I No que diz respeito ao luxo Voltaire é considerado um apologista, algo natural dado sua defesa do luxo como ferramenta eficaz para atingir prosperidade tanto a nível estatal quanto individual, no entanto, quando nos atentamos para os diversos textos de Voltaire que tratam do tema notamos uma característica marcante - estamos diante de uma abordagem multifacetada, ou seja, o luxo é tratado a partir de ângulos distintos - o que o torna interpretativamente problemático. O presente artigo tentará propor uma interpretação alternativa àquela de René Pomeau sobre o luxo, presente em seu consagrado livro La Religion de Voltaire . E o que o comentador diz? Para o momento basta anotar que, segundo René Pomeau, Voltaire teria ido da apologia do luxo e do mundano para uma postura oposta, antimundana. Concordamos que existe uma oscilação, mas, segundo nos parece, ela se deve mais às complexidades do tema do que uma mudança radical de postura por parte de Voltaire. A primeira explicação para essa abordagem multifacetada mencionada acima se liga ao fato de Voltaire ser um grande polemista, porém, mais do que isso devemos considerar as muitas possibilidades que o tema abre (moral, política e economia, por exemplo) e o longo tempo de reflexão que foi dedicado ao luxo por nosso autor, assunto da moda no século XVIII. -

C'est le siecle des Lumieres et de l'Encyclopedie. Les philosophes s'unissent pour liberer le public des traditions, superstitions et des idees medievales fausses. Ils defendent entre autres la liberte, la raison, la tolerance, la justice, l'egal ite, le progres, et denoncent les abus de pouvoir. C'est le siecle de la critique religieuse, sociale et politique avec Voltaire et Rousseau qui contestent la societe de privilegies issus du Moyen Age. Meme si Voltaire et Rousseau sont consideres comme des philosophes du Siecle des Lumieres, leurs styles et leurs points de vue sont differents sur presque tous les sujets. Voltaire's lengthy correspondences do not contain anything that might indicate the period in which Micromegas was published. The engraved title of the edition that I believe to be the original displays no date. Abbot Trublet, in his Biography of Fontenelle, does not hesitate to say that Micromegas is directed against Fontenelle; but does not speak of the date of publication. I have therefore retained that given by the Kehl editions: 1752. However there is an edition carrying the date of 1700. Is this date authentic? I would not make this claim; far from it. -

Quelles œuvres Diderot a-t-il réellement vues lors de ses visites aux galeries de Dusseldorf et de Dresde ? Daniel Droixhe, tout en soulignant la singulière sensibilité de Diderot à la construction pictu- rale, corrige certaines des erreurs d’identification commises par le voyageur lui-même ou par ses commentateurs; l’identité des visiteurs de ces galeries signale, en outre, l’existence d’un véritable réseau de sociabilité franco-hollando-germanique. -

PAPER 6 STATES BETWEEN STATES: THE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL THOUGHT FROM THE ROMAN EMPIRE TO THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY Convenor: Dr MJ Ryan (2019-20) INTRODUCTION What is the ‘political’ in the history of political thought? In his Politics, the Greek philosopher Aristotle understood ta politika – the ‘political things’, politics, of his title – to be those things that concern the polis, the city-state that was the central unit of (precisely) political organisation in ancient Greece. This covered everything from the motivation and rationale of the polis, its constitutional structure, who qualified for citizenship, the nature of its government, to political safety strategies on the one hand and musical education on the other. At its base it involved a narrative about human beings forming into a political community for ends that cannot otherwise be achieved. This narrative, in multiple permutations, has been central to the tradition of Western political thought, and its focus is primarily on the relationship of citizens to fellow-citizens, and citizens to government, within one political unit, what we call ‘the state’. And yet, even in Aristotle’s Politics it is clear that the polis does not exist in isolation. The lives of its citizens demand slaves, who need to be ‘hunted’ abroad. Thus the polis must stretch out into space beyond itself. And it needs goods, which means merchants living within it who are nevertheless not part of it, not citizens. Thus the outside comes in. These inside/outside relations impact on the very theorisation of the polis itself, as Aristotle defines the relationships and laws between citizens against both commercial treaties and military alliances: both of which might look uncomfortably like political relations, but which for Aristotle’s purposes must, crucially, be excluded as such. -

L'ironie Dans « Micromegas
L’IRONIE DANS « MICROMEGAS » : L’ATTAQUE AUX PHILOSOPHES ET À LA SCIENCE Mariana Borrasca FERREIRA1 RESUMÉ : Ce travail a pour but analyser l’ironie dirigée aux philosophes et à la science des Lumières dans « Micromégas », conte philosophique écrit par Vol- taire en 1752. On a choisi certains extraits du texte où le narrateur emploie cette ressource stylistique pour critiquer des philosophes et des sages de l’époque qui valorisaient la raison surtout.Pour rendre plus claire la spécificité de la construc- tion voltairienne de l’ironie, seulement à titre de démonstration, on a fait une comparaison succincte entre sa façon d’élaborer l’ironie et celle de Machado de Assis dans le conte « O alienista »,qui est aussi une critique à une façon de faire de la science, mais dans une autre époque. Para tanto, foram selecionados trechos do texto em que o narrador utili- za o recurso estilístico para criticar os filósofos e sábios da época, que supervalor- izavam a razão.
