Sommaire #57 LA MATIÈRE ET L’ESPRIT Un doigt vers le ciel La religion a au moins le mérite de montrer que l’homme n’est pas maître, qu’il doit obéir à plus fort que lui, et qu’il serait fou de tout raisonner. Mais la religion ne s’arrête pas à cette hauteur. Quand les prophètes et les docteurs prétendent posséder un peu de cette puissance supérieure pour dominer les hommes, ils renversent notre faiblesse vis- à-vis du Tout-Puissant – ou de la nature – en infériorité. Ils imposent les saints parmi les leurs et font peur à la foule. Ils interdisent, sans en avoir le droit, puisqu’ils s’appuient sur la misère métaphysique pour imposer l’ordre politique. L’homme est misérable, c’est un fait. Mais ce n’est pas un crime d’être infidèle, ce que déclarent les docteurs en usant de leur orthodoxie pour condamner. Que signifient donc leurs maisons de Dieu dont les clochers et les minarets dépassent les toits ? La réussite d’une carte postale ? Un hommage à la beauté ? Des remerciements au Grand Être ? La supériorité du culte sur l’inculte ? Un doigt vers le ciel ? Un index accusateur, un coup de knout. -

Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017). -

Part road movie, part science fiction, part real, it’s a film about seeing our world through alien eyes. Into the Unknown: The Making Of UNDER THE SKIN From Book to Script In the space of 12 years and three feature films, Jonathan Glazer has established himself as a director of style and innovation. His debut, Sexy Beast, invigorated the British gangster movie by infusing a tense London heist story with dark shades of Jacobean tragedy, a feat achieved largely by the unexpected and inspired casting of Sir Ben Kingsley as the film's sociopathic villain. The follow-up, Birth, took similar liberties, this time with the ghost story, starring Nicole Kidman as a woman who believes her late husband has been reincarnated as young boy. So it is perhaps significant that Under the Skin, which began development even before Birth, is another reinvention of genre. Based on Michel Faber's 2000 novel of the same name, it tells the story of a predatory female who cruises the streets of Scotland looking for men to seduce. Faber's novel is paced thoughtfully and slowly, until it is revealed that the heroine is an alien, looking for suitable specimens that can be turned into a type of meat, to be sent back to her starving homeland. -

Modernism Unbound Mark Fisher in Memoriam, Part 3: Dystopian Modernism (on Under the Skin) Jon Lindblom Under the Skin (2013) is a remarkable film,1 with some of the most extraordinary imagery and music that I have encountered in the cinema for a long time. The (very loose) story centres on an alien posing as a woman (brilliantly played by Scarlett Johansson), who travels along the Scottish countryside with her mysterious partner and preys on men by seducing them and lur- ing them into her otherworldly nest. The film was directed by Jonathan Glazer, who made Birth in 2004 and Sexy Beast in 2000, and also is known for the music videos that he directed in the 90s (including Massive Attack’s ‘Karmacoma’ (1995), UNKLE’s ‘Rabbit in Your Headlights’ (1998), and Radiohead’s ‘Karma Police’ (1997) and ‘Street Spirit (Fade Out)’ (1996)) as part of the golden generation of music-video directors that also included Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Chris Cunningham, among others. Indeed, all these directors became known as auteurs through their music videos – which allowed them to develop very distinct visual styles thanks to the creative spaces for experimentation that directing music videos may offer. For even though music videos often have been theorised under the aegis of postmodern aesthetics, the much more ambiguous relationship between image and music compared to in narrative film and television may also open up unique opportunities for modernist, formal experimentation. Indeed, when at their best, music videos in fact have a lot in common with the major experi- mental films – where narrative progression is put aside in favour of formal audio-visual exper- imentation. -

Signature……………………………………………………………………………………………… Name…………………………………………………………………………………………………… Date……………………………………………………………………………………………………… 2 Abstract The focus of my PhD is the artistic inheritance of the classic pop songwriting tradition, as characterised by what I see as its core aesthetic values — tunefulness, conciseness and the use of clear sectionalised structures. My research explores the combination of these priorities with features not usually associated with pop, such as periodic variation, polyrhythmic layering, harmonic ambiguity and melodic counterpoint, with the aim being to create complex and unpredictable music imbued with pop’s directness of communication. The result of this research is a portfolio of four contrasting projects: I.D., a full-length album of songs, Down The Tubes, an instrumental piece designed for private listening, Malicious Insomnia, a concert work written for the new music ensemble Sudden Junction, and Terse, a four-song E.P. These were chosen to demonstrate the wide applicability of my pop- derived musical language, and feature collaborations with established performers from pop, folk, jazz and classical backgrounds.
