Asian Christian Writers in the 16th–18th Centuries A Selection From Japan John England SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES The “Christian century” following Xavier’s arrival in 1549 saw the emer- gence of Christian writings in many forms, both by Japanese converts and through their collaboration with Jesuit scholars. 1. Amongst the earliest Christian writers for whom some texts are extant are: a) Paulo Yoho-ken (1510-1596) has been termed the “father of Japanese Christian literature.” Physician, catechist and later member of the Society of Jesus, his writings include plays on Christ’s Passion and on Christmas, and the stories Kurofune Monogatari (Tale of the Black Ship) and Bungo Monogatari (Tale of Bungo) of which only extracts are ex- tant. He was also co-author, and translator, for a Catechism, for “Lives of the Saints”, a grammar, a dictionary and other works. b) Vincente Hoin (b. 1538, son of Yoho-ken was said in the “Cata- logue” of 1593 to have “written and translated the greater part of the spiritual and learned books which have thus far been written in Japanese” (Laures, 1957, 40). See volumes listed below for the years 1586-1599. c) Hosokawa, Tama Gracia (1563-1600), wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki, wrote a series of letters to Gregorio de Cespedes S.J. (Laures, 1959, 98ff.) and also a number of poems (Heuvers 1938, 277; Laures 1956, 113f.) in the years 1587-1600. (Her life is given in Boker 1934-5, Lau- res 1956 and Laures 1959.) d) Fucan Fabian (b. 1565) is noted for both the first Japanese work of apologetic, and (later) for the first anti-Christian book in Japan: Myotai Mondo (Dialogue between Myoshu and Yutei) contains an out- line of Christian doctrine and a refutation of Confucianism, Shinto This is the fourth paper on Asian Christian Writers in 16th-18th Centuries to be published in Inter- religio. -

He has become war incarnate and continues to slaughter his enemies, instilling terror in the populace, who call him a king of demons. -

ONE The Muromachi Period in Japanese History Cer~ain periods of history reveal only enough about themselves to confuse us. The Muromachi period (1336-1573) is one of these, having long defied attempts to discover in it orderly patterns of political and social life. Many traditional historians simply dis missed it as an age of political and economic instability, social anarchy, and inordinate civil violence. While these evaluations are not totally inaccurate, the era that produced the very zenith of Japan's high culture in the visual and performing arts surely offers more to the student of institutional development. This paradox inevitably led Japanese scholars to draw contradictory conclusions about what they found and about what the Muromachi contribu tion was to Japanese history. This volume will try to present a synthetic reinterpretation of Muromachi politics and society in the light of their detailed researches, which in their several ways have helped to demystify the pall of confusion surrounding the era. Our focus will be on the Muromachi Bakufu, the military regime that governed Japan during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and on the shogun who headed that government. Al though the Muromachi Bakufu existed from its founding by Ashikaga Takauji in 1336 until the last shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki was overthrown by Oda Nobunaga in 1573, it ceased to exert real national influence from the early sixteenth century. This book will concentrate only on that part of the Muromachi age (c. 1336- 2 The Muromachi Period 1490) when the Ashikaga shoguns actually ruled and their Bakufu was a viable central government. -

The Confucian Elements in the Book of Five Rings 1 ACTA ASIATICA VARSOVIENSIA No. 27, 2014 PL ISSN 08606102 EMIL CIECIEL¥G The Confucian Elements in the Book of Five Rings Abstract Confucianism arrived in Japan at the beginning of the fifth century A.D. Confucianism influenced the growth of feudalism and the creation of bushidô, the code of moral principles and an inspiration for Japanese warriors. Miyamoto Musashi was one of the most famous samurai in Japanese history. He established the Niten Ichi Ryû kendô school. In the Book of Five Rings, Musashi set down his own principles, in the belief that each of his students should live by them. Some Confucian elements were included in the Book of Five Rings. Confucianism appeared in Japan in 402 AD with the Analects of Confucius.1 Confucianism probably had a strong influence on the development of the Bushidô, the unwritten collection of warriors moral rules.2 Thus, Confucian ethics soon became the framework for the education of samurai. This article makes an attempt to discern the crucial Confucian elements existing in the Gorin-no Sho (The Book of Five Rings), a work written by one of the most renowned Japanese warriors. The principles contained in the Dokkôdô (The Way to be Followed Alone) will serve as a guide here. Throughout the article the traditional Hepburn transcription3 has been applied. The goal of this article is to present the Confucian elements in the Book of Five Rings. Confucianism is a system of teachings started by Confucius, and continued by his students.4 According to Confucius, each person should live according to the Way of Heaven.5 This means the procedure of moral norms, such as obedience to parents, kindness, righteousness and loyalty6. -

They quickly succeeded in converting a small part of the Japanese population, especially in the southern regions of the country. But this nascent Japanese Christianity faced many challenges. A significant stumbling block was the centrality of traditional funeral rites in Japanese society. Wary of upsetting social norms, the Jesuits opted for a strategy known as the ‘accommodation policy’, by which they tried to identify Japanese ritual elements that could be incorporated or adapted into the Christian liturgy without threatening its doctrinal integrity. -

An analysis of the production of churches in Japan (chapter 1) lays the ground for a thorough exploration of the particular case of the Christian community of Nagasaki from 1569 to 1643 in the following chapters, I first address how Christians were involved in the foundation and design of the port and town, with a church as its symbolic centre (chapter 2), and the consequences for the Christian community when the administration rights over Nagasaki were donated to the Jesuits in 1580 (chapter 3). -

The emergence of the daimyo The protector-daimyo lost their positions of strength during and after the Onin War. Gekokujo became widespread as more and more of the powerful retainers and village samurai toppled the protector-daimyo through force of arms and installed themselves as masters of their provinces. These new feudal lords are called the warring states daimyo.1 *1=The major daimyo families included the Hojo clan of Sagami Province (modern-day Kanagawa Prefecture), the Asakura clan of Echizen Province (modern-day Fukui Prefecture), the Imagawa clan, whose power extended from Suruga Province (modern-day Shizuoka Prefecture) to Mikawa Province (modern-day eastern Aichi Prefecture), the Uesugi clan of Echigo Province (modern-day Niigata Prefecture), the Takeda clan of Kai Province (modern-day Yamanashi Prefecture), and the Mori clan, which was based in Aki Province (modern-day Hiroshima Prefecture) and extended its influence across southern Japan, including Shikoku and Kyushu. Japan's farming villages had already been forming their own governing bodies called so and asserting their autonomy since the time of the War of the Northern and Southern Courts, which had loosened the grip of the shogunate and the protectors over rural communities. Some of these so had been organizing ikki to achieve common ends. Under the leadership of local samurai, they often succeeded in making their demands heard. -

Through a series of case studies, I examine the works of art and architecture created by or for three sisters of the Asai 浅井 family: Yodo- dono 淀殿 (1569-1615), Jōkō-in 常高院 (1570-1633), and Sūgen-in 崇源院 (1573-1626). The Asai sisters held an elite status in their lifetimes, in part due to their relationship with the “Three Unifiers” of early 17th century Japan—Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537- 1589), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). As such, they were uniquely positioned to participate in the cultural battle for control of Japan. In each of my three case studies, I look at a specific site or object associated with one of the sisters.
