Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics. -

NEWS RELEASE November, 2009 The Lineage of Culture – The Hosokawa Family Eisei Bunko Collection The Tokyo National Museum is pleased to present the special exhibition “The Lineage of Culture—The Hosokawa Family Eisei Bunko Collection” from Tuesday, April 20, to Sunday, June 6, 2010. The Eisei Bunko Foundation was established in 1950 by 16th-generation family head Hosokawa Moritatsu with the objective of preserving for future generations the legacy of the cultural treasures of the Hosokawa family, lords of the former Kumamoto domain. It takes its name from the “Ei” of Eigen’an—the subtemple of Kenninji in Kyoto, which served as the family temple for eight generations from the time of the original patriarch Hosokawa Yoriari, of the governing family of Izumi province in the medieval period— and the “Sei” of Seiryūji Castle, which was home to Hosokawa Fujitaka (better known as Yūsai), the founder of the modern Hosokawa line. Totaling over 80,000 objects, it is one of the leading collections of cultural properties in Japan and includes archival documents, Yūsai’s treatises on waka poetry, tea utensils connected to the great tea master Sen no Rikyū from the personal collection of 2nd-generation head Tadaoki (Sansai), various objects associated with Hosokawa Gracia, and paintings by Miyamoto Musashi. The current exhibition will present the history of the Hosokawa family and highlight its role in the transmission of traditional Japanese culture—in particular the secrets to understanding the Kokinshū poetry collection, and the cultural arts of Noh theater and the Way of Tea—by means of numerous treasured art objects and historical documents that have been safeguarded through the family’s tumultuous history. -

Jugurtha was a North African patriot who initiated the Jugurthine War (112–105 B.C.). His guerrilla warfare would inflict embarrassing defeat upon the Roman legions. Authors Brunson and Rashidi quote Graham Webster when he wrote, “The wars of Jugurtha demonstrated the value of the nimble Moorish horsemen who Trajan later found so useful against the Dacians.”1 Black Conquistadors Juan Bardales was a free black slave who participated in the conquests of Honduras and Panama. For the part he played in the conquest of Honduras, he received an award consisting of an annual subsidy of 50 pesos.2 Nuflo de Olano was a slave conquistador and explorer. He was part of the Vasco Núñez de Balboa expedition, along with 30 other Africans, 190 Spaniards, and 1,000 Native Americans when they went through the jungle to cross the Isthmus of Panama. De Olano in 1513 was with Balboa when they first saw the Pacific Ocean.3 Antonio Pérez was a free North African who was a cavalryman and one of Diego de Losada’s most valued captains in 1568. Pérez took part in the conquest of Venezuela.4 He was described as “an old soldier of African wars who had been with the emperor at the storming of Tunis.”5 Juan Portugués was either black African or black Portuguese. He was involved in the conquest of Venezuela.6 Miguel Ruíz was a free Spanish mulatto who was a conquistador in Peru and one of two blacks in Francisco Pizarro’s company at Cajamarca. -

The entire process was at risk of being aborted, which could have resulted in the country lapsing back into the state of civil war and anarchy in which it had lived for more than a century.4 However, an individual by the name of Tokugawa Ieyasu 徳川家康 (1543-1616) 5 shrewdly took advantage of the hesitation shown by many of his rivals and the military weakness or lack of strategic vision on the part of others to take control of the Japanese Empire, which would remain in the hands of his family for more than 250 years. -

The Muromachi Period in Japanese History Cer~Ain Periods of History
ONE The Muromachi Period in Japanese History Cer~ain periods of history reveal only enough about themselves to confuse us. The Muromachi period (1336-1573) is one of these, having long defied attempts to discover in it orderly patterns of political and social life. Many traditional historians simply dis missed it as an age of political and economic instability, social anarchy, and inordinate civil violence. While these evaluations are not totally inaccurate, the era that produced the very zenith of Japan's high culture in the visual and performing arts surely offers more to the student of institutional development. This paradox inevitably led Japanese scholars to draw contradictory conclusions about what they found and about what the Muromachi contribu tion was to Japanese history. This volume will try to present a synthetic reinterpretation of Muromachi politics and society in the light of their detailed researches, which in their several ways have helped to demystify the pall of confusion surrounding the era. Our focus will be on the Muromachi Bakufu, the military regime that governed Japan during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and on the shogun who headed that government. Al though the Muromachi Bakufu existed from its founding by Ashikaga Takauji in 1336 until the last shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki was overthrown by Oda Nobunaga in 1573, it ceased to exert real national influence from the early sixteenth century. This book will concentrate only on that part of the Muromachi age (c. 1336- 2 The Muromachi Period 1490) when the Ashikaga shoguns actually ruled and their Bakufu was a viable central government.
