Early moral education, consequently, is largely concerned with preparing the spirited part of the soul for this role as reason’s ‘ally’. In Plato’s later work the Laws, the the- ory of tripartition is never explicitly advocated: there is no mention of a division of the soul into parts, and hence no discussion of a ‘spirited’ part of the soul with a positive role to play in moral deve- lopment. Not only that, but some of the most conspicuous passages about spirited motivation in the text emphasize its negative impact on our psychology and behaviour. The spirited emotion of anger, for example, is identified as one of the primary causes of criminal behaviour ( ). All this has led many commentators to conclude that in the Laws Plato rejects the tripartite theory of the soul as we know it from the Republic and adopts a new psychological model in its place. Christopher Bobonich, for example, has argued that Plato abandoned the idea of a partitioned soul altogether in the Laws, opting instead for a unitary conception of the soul. -

MEINARDU S Athens, Greece Some months ago, I revisited the island of Patmos and the sites of the seven churches to which letters are addressed in the second and third chap- ters of the book of Revelation. What follows is a report on such Christian remains as have survived and an indication of the various traditions which have grown up at the eight locations, where, as at so many other places in the Orthodox and Latin world, piety has sought tangible localization. I set out from Piraeus and sailed to the island of Patmos, off the Turkish coast, which had gained its significance because of the enforced exile of God's servant John (Rev. 1:1, 9) and from the acceptance of the Revelation in the NT canon. From the tiny port of Skala, financial and tourist center of Patmos, the road ascends to the 11th century Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John the Theologian. Half way to this mighty fortress monastery, I stopped at the Monastery of the Apocalypse, which enshrines the "Grotto of the Revelation." Throughout the centuries pilgrims have come to this site to receive blessings. When Pitton de Tournefort visited Patmos in 1702, the grotto was a poor hermitage administered by the bishop of Samos. The abbot presented de Tournefort with pieces of rock from the grotto, assuring him that they could expel evil spirits and cure diseases. Nowadays, hundreds of western tourists visit the grotto daily, especially during the summer, and are shown those traditional features which are related in one way or another with the vision of John. -

NORENA The Roman emperor served a number of functions within the Roman state. The emperor's public image reflected this diversity. Triumphal processions and imposing state monuments such as Trajan's Column or the Arch of Septimius Severus celebrated the military exploits and martial glory of the emperor. Distributions of grain and coin, public buildings, and spectacle entertainments in the city of Rome all advertised the emperor's patronage of the urban plebs, while imperial rescripts posted in every corner of the Empire stood as so many witnesses to the emperor's conscientious administration of law and justice. -

Epigraphic Bulletin for Greek Religion 2010 (EBGR 2010) The 23rd issue of the Epigraphic Bulletin for Greek Religion presents a selection of the epigraphic publications of 2010 and additions to earlier issues (especially publications of 2008 and 2009). As usual, emphasis was placed on the presentation of editions of new texts. This issue contains several interesting new epigraphic finds, mostly from Asia Minor. I would like to highlight a long Hellenistic inscription from Lykia (Tlos or Xanthos) that concerns a funerary foundation (143); besides providing interesting details regarding the sacrifice and the banquet, this text is an important piece of evidence for the devotion of an individual to a personal patron god (Helios, in this case), for belief in a personal ‘hero’ (or daimon), and the heroization through private initiative. Bodies of Knowledge: The Presentation of Personified Figures in Engraved Allegorical Series Produced in the Netherlands, 1548-1600 Abstract During the second half of the sixteenth century, engraved series of allegorical subjects featuring personified figures flourished for several decades in the Low Countries before falling into disfavor. Designed by the Netherlandsâ?? leading artists and cut by professional engravers, such series were collected primarily by the urban intelligentsia, who appreciated the use of personification for the representation of immaterial concepts and for the transmission of knowledge, both in prints and in public spectacles. The pairing of embodied forms and serial format was particularly well suited to the portrayal of abstract themes with multiple components, such as the Four Elements, Four Seasons, Seven Planets, Five Senses, or Seven Virtues and Seven Vices. While many of the themes had existed prior to their adoption in Netherlandish graphics, their pictorial rendering had rarely been so pervasive or systematic. -

Shakespeare's Sonnets and the Use of Personification Transcript Date: Tuesday, 24 January 2017 - 6:00PM Location: Museum of London 24 January 2017 Shakespeare’s Sonnets and the Use of Personification Professor Belinda Jack This academic year we’ve been exploring various aspects of rhetoric, briefly, the ‘art of persuasion’, in relation to a number of famous works of English literature. We considered Jane Austen’s use of irony in her last completed novel, Persuasion. In the second lecture we explored Dickens’ use of hyperbole, or ‘exaggeration’, in his late novel, Hard Times. And tonight we embark on Shakespeare’s sonnets – or at least some of them – in relation to the rhetorical trope of personification or prosopopoeia. A prosopopoeia (Greek: προσωποποιία) is a device by means of which a speaker or writer communicates by speaking as another person or an object. The term derives from the Greek prósopon ‘face, person’, and poiéin ‘to make, to do’. But my purpose is not simply to illustrate how certain techniques work, but to suggest that in the hands of the great writers the trope in question is frequently subtly subverted, or extended, or in some way tweaked. Rhetoric never has things completely sorted, nor is it unchanging. But first a few words about the sonnets and, then, about personification and its history. The first written work bearing Shakespeare’s name was the erotic narrative, Venus and Adonis (1593), which draws on a rich vocabulary to explore love, praise of the loved one, sexual desire and the power of rhetoric. The poem was immensely successful so much so that many of Shakespeare’s contemporaries considered him a poet first and foremost, rather than a playwright. -

Petrarch claimed she was real, but her name, played upon in Italian in the poems, also epitomizes poetic ideals (Laud = praise; L’aura = breath, spirit; L’oro = gold; Laurel = laureate: (n.) a person who is honoured with an award for outstanding creative or intellectual achievement: a Nobel Laureate or Poet Laureate.
