Early moral education, consequently, is largely concerned with preparing the spirited part of the soul for this role as reason’s ‘ally’. In Plato’s later work the Laws, the the- ory of tripartition is never explicitly advocated: there is no mention of a division of the soul into parts, and hence no discussion of a ‘spirited’ part of the soul with a positive role to play in moral deve- lopment. Not only that, but some of the most conspicuous passages about spirited motivation in the text emphasize its negative impact on our psychology and behaviour. The spirited emotion of anger, for example, is identified as one of the primary causes of criminal behaviour ( ). All this has led many commentators to conclude that in the Laws Plato rejects the tripartite theory of the soul as we know it from the Republic and adopts a new psychological model in its place. Christopher Bobonich, for example, has argued that Plato abandoned the idea of a partitioned soul altogether in the Laws, opting instead for a unitary conception of the soul. -

NORENA The Roman emperor served a number of functions within the Roman state. The emperor's public image reflected this diversity. Triumphal processions and imposing state monuments such as Trajan's Column or the Arch of Septimius Severus celebrated the military exploits and martial glory of the emperor. Distributions of grain and coin, public buildings, and spectacle entertainments in the city of Rome all advertised the emperor's patronage of the urban plebs, while imperial rescripts posted in every corner of the Empire stood as so many witnesses to the emperor's conscientious administration of law and justice. -

Chanda School of Humanities and Social Science University of Zambia Email: mchanda@@gmail.com Abstract Names, also called proper names or proper nouns, are very important to mankind that there is no human language without names and, for some types of names, there are written or unwritten naming conventions. The social importance of names is also the reason why onomastics, the study of names, is a multidisciplinary field. After briefly discussing the multidisciplinary nature of onomastics, the article proves the following view stated and proved by many a scholar: proper names have a grammar that includes some grammatical features of common nouns. In so doing, the article shows that, like common nouns, proper names show cross linguistic differences. To prove that names do have a grammar which in some aspects differs from the grammar of common nouns, the article often compares proper names and common nouns. Furthermore, the article uses data from several languages in addition to English. After a bief discussion of orthographic differences between proper names and common nouns, the article focuses on the morphology, both inflectional and lexical, and the syntax of proper names. They enter a U.S. school and can also lose their name. Their name may be deliberately changed by parents or school staff, or an error may be made in the order of the name or its spelling. These mistakes can have lasting effects on students. A person’s name is part of his or her cultural identity, and it is up to schools to get it right. In order for teachers, administrators, or office staff in your school to enroll students with the correct the name, they need to understand the naming conventions of different cultures. Here are seven naming customs from different cultures. Korean names are written with the family name first. If Yeon Suk has the family name “Lee,” his name will be written Lee Yeon Suk. The given name usually has two parts, and it follows the family name. Either part of the given name can be a generation marker: Two- part given names should not be shortened— that is, Lee Yeon Suk should be called Yeon Suk, not Yeon. Russian names have three parts: a given name, a patronymic (a middle name based on the father’s first name), and the father’s surname. If Viktor Aleksandrovich Rakhmaninov has two children, his daughter’s name would be Svetlana Viktorevna Rakhmaninova. -

19.6.2020 Names, signatures and images of individuals; fictitious character, titles of books, films and songs Registrability of surnames and personal names The principles for assessing the distinctive character of marks constituted by surnames have been considered in the European Court of Justice's ("ECJ") judgment in Case C-404/02 Nichols plc v Registrar of Trade Marks [2005] R.P.C. 12. In Nichols, the ECJ confirmed that the assessment of the distinctive character of a trade mark constituted by a surname, even a common one, must be carried out specifically, in accordance with the criteria applicable to any sign, in relation, first, to the products or services in respect of which registration is applied for and, second to the perception of the relevant consumers. The criteria for assessment of the distinctive character of trade marks constituted by a personal name are the same as those applicable to other categories of trade marks. Stricter general criteria of assessment based on: - a predetermined number of persons with the same name, above which that name may be regarded as devoid of distinctive character, - the number of undertakings providing products or services of the type covered by the application for registration, or - the prevalence or otherwise of the use of surnames in the relevant trade cannot be applied to surname marks as a rule-of-thumb. IPD HKSAR 1 Trade Marks Registry Registration of a trade mark constituted by a surname cannot be refused for the purpose of ensuring that no advantage is afforded to the first applicant for registration. All relevant facts and circumstances should be taken into account. -

Bodies of Knowledge: The Presentation of Personified Figures in Engraved Allegorical Series Produced in the Netherlands, 1548-1600 Abstract During the second half of the sixteenth century, engraved series of allegorical subjects featuring personified figures flourished for several decades in the Low Countries before falling into disfavor. Designed by the Netherlandsâ?? leading artists and cut by professional engravers, such series were collected primarily by the urban intelligentsia, who appreciated the use of personification for the representation of immaterial concepts and for the transmission of knowledge, both in prints and in public spectacles. The pairing of embodied forms and serial format was particularly well suited to the portrayal of abstract themes with multiple components, such as the Four Elements, Four Seasons, Seven Planets, Five Senses, or Seven Virtues and Seven Vices. While many of the themes had existed prior to their adoption in Netherlandish graphics, their pictorial rendering had rarely been so pervasive or systematic. -

What’s in an Irish Name? A Study of the Personal Naming Systems of Irish and Irish English Liam Mac Mathúna (St Patrick’s College, Dublin) 1. Introduction: The Irish Patronymic System Prior to 1600 While the history of Irish personal names displays general similarities with the fortunes of the country’s place-names, it also shows significant differences, as both first and second names are closely bound up with the ego-identity of those to whom they belong.1 This paper examines how the indigenous system of Gaelic personal names was moulded to the requirements of a foreign, English-medium administration, and how the early twentieth-century cultural revival prompted the re-establish- ment of an Irish-language nomenclature. It sets out the native Irish system of surnames, which distinguishes formally between male and female (married/ un- married) and shows how this was assimilated into the very different English sys- tem, where one surname is applied to all. A distinguishing feature of nomen- clature in Ireland today is the phenomenon of dual Irish and English language naming, with most individuals accepting that there are two versions of their na- me. The uneasy relationship between these two versions, on the fault-line of lan- guage contact, as it were, is also examined. Thus, the paper demonstrates that personal names, at once the pivots of individual and group identity, are a rich source of continuing insight into the dynamics of Irish and English language contact in Ireland. Shakespeare's Sonnets and the Use of Personification Transcript Date: Tuesday, 24 January 2017 - 6:00PM Location: Museum of London 24 January 2017 Shakespeare’s Sonnets and the Use of Personification Professor Belinda Jack This academic year we’ve been exploring various aspects of rhetoric, briefly, the ‘art of persuasion’, in relation to a number of famous works of English literature. We considered Jane Austen’s use of irony in her last completed novel, Persuasion. In the second lecture we explored Dickens’ use of hyperbole, or ‘exaggeration’, in his late novel, Hard Times. And tonight we embark on Shakespeare’s sonnets – or at least some of them – in relation to the rhetorical trope of personification or prosopopoeia. A prosopopoeia (Greek: προσωποποιία) is a device by means of which a speaker or writer communicates by speaking as another person or an object. The term derives from the Greek prósopon ‘face, person’, and poiéin ‘to make, to do’. But my purpose is not simply to illustrate how certain techniques work, but to suggest that in the hands of the great writers the trope in question is frequently subtly subverted, or extended, or in some way tweaked. Rhetoric never has things completely sorted, nor is it unchanging. But first a few words about the sonnets and, then, about personification and its history. The first written work bearing Shakespeare’s name was the erotic narrative, Venus and Adonis (1593), which draws on a rich vocabulary to explore love, praise of the loved one, sexual desire and the power of rhetoric. The poem was immensely successful so much so that many of Shakespeare’s contemporaries considered him a poet first and foremost, rather than a playwright. -

Petrarch claimed she was real, but her name, played upon in Italian in the poems, also epitomizes poetic ideals (Laud = praise; L’aura = breath, spirit; L’oro = gold; Laurel = laureate: (n.) a person who is honoured with an award for outstanding creative or intellectual achievement: a Nobel Laureate or Poet Laureate. (adj.) wreathed with laurel as a mark of honor; (of a crown or wreath) consisting of laurel. The Art of Memory and the Allegorical Personification of Justice Ruth Weisberg It is really intriguing that the figure of Justice has persisted into modem times, an almost singular survival from an earlier period in which allegorical personifications were commonplace. And just what is an "allegorical personification"? Although we may be familiar with allegory as a representation of an abstract idea or concept usually involving humans or animals, we tend to be less knowledgeable in regard to allegory as a system of complex visual signs. Figures such as Justice have traditionally been accompanied by significant props or material attributes that identified them and elucidated their meaning. They were part of a vast array of embodiments or personifications that served multiple purposes, the most important of which was the organization of an elaborate conceptual system of values. More specifically, Justice, traditionally grouped with the Cardinal Virtues, originated in ancient Greece. The Cardinal Virtues typically consisted of Justice, Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperance, all of which had their accompanying attributes. For example, Fortitude might be depicted escorted by a lion or embracing a broken column and Temperance often holds a bridle. While certain of these props are unvarying, there was significant leeway in the choice of attributes over the centuries. E.H. Gombrich writes of the customary way of constructing an allegorical personification in which "an image or a concept can be explicated by means of attributes and it is really a matter of taste or tact how far the poet or artist wishes to go in piling up these specifications, how many attributes he wants to give Prudence to match her definition."' * Professor, Roski School of Fine Arts, University of Southern California. -
