4 JAK ROzuměT „POHANSKÝM RELIKTům“: FolKLÓR BALTSKÝCH ZEMÍ JAKO ZDROJ PRO STUDIUM PředKřesťANSKÝCH TRADIC STARÝCH BALTů Anglický termín folklore, přeložitelný do češtiny jako „lidová tradice“ či „lidové vě- dění“, začal být evropskými vzdělanci užíván před polovinou 19. století.1 V kon- textu historie moderní vědy se jedná o zásadní epochu, kdy vznikala v sekulární podobě většina současných humanitních oborů, včetně organizovaného studia folklóru. Evropská města prodělávala touto dobou druhou vlnu „industriální revoluce“, spojenou s modernizací, masovými imigracemi venkovské populace a pozvolnou „detradicionalizací“ v širších vrstvách společnosti. Modernizační procesy přitom neovlivňovaly pouze kulturní prostředí měst, ale prosakovaly v různých podobách i na venkov. Důsledkem toho zde začínají mizet dlouhodobě konzervované kulturní elementy, nezřídka poměrně „archaického“ stáří. Zároveň s těmito procesy však již druhá generace romantických intelektuálů mezi Atlan- tikem a Volhou usilovně studuje kulturní dějiny dílčích (obvykle svých vlastních) národů, zpravidla se zvláštním zřetelem k jejich historické genezi a identickým specifikům.2 Tradice udržované venkovskými obyvateli, do 18. století městskou inteligencí spíše ignorované či opovrhované, získávají ještě před rokem 1800 ros- toucí pozornost a následně i roli „stavebního materiálu“ při procesu „budování“ národních identit.3 1 Za původce anglického termínu folklore, který vytlačil starší latinismus popular antiquities, bývá obvykle považován spisovatel a amatérský historik William John Thoms (1803–1885). He spent a year studying French literature at the Université de Paris (1960−1961) and a year after college at the Freie Universität Berlin, studying German literature. His graduate work was done at Harvard University (M.A. in Comparative Literature, 1964; Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, 1968), including a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Université de Lyon in 1966−1967. Professor Weinstein’s professional career has taken place almost entirely at Brown University, where he has gone from Assistant Professor to his current position as Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature. He won the Workman Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Humanities in 1995. He has also won a number of prestigious fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship in American literature at Stockholm University in 1983 and research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1998 (in the area of literature and medicine) and in 2007 (in the area of Scandinavian literature). Drawing on a cognitive model, which provides certain parameters and expectations for the representations of the gods, in particular, for the physical representations their bodies, I examine the anthropomorphic representation of the gods. I show how the narratives of the Homeric Hymns represent communication as based upon false assumptions between the mortals and immortals about the body. I argue that two methods are used to create and maintain the commonality between mortal bodies and immortal bodies; the allocation of skills among many gods and the transference of displays of power to tools used by the gods. However, despite these techniques, the texts represent communication based upon assumptions about the body as unsuccessful. Next, I analyze the instances in which the assumed body of the god is recognized by mortals, within a narrative. This recognition is not based upon physical attributes, but upon the spoken self identification by the god. Finally, I demonstrate how successful communication occurs, within the text, after the god has been recognized. Successful communication is represented as occurring in the presence of ritual references. -

In pursuit of the goddess How one woman defied the odds to restore the feminist principle Rita Repsiene 19 April 2010 Controversial in her day and not without opponents even now, she became a feminist icon and a hero of the post-religious twenty-first century. Lithuanian- American archeologist Marija Gimbutas (Lithuanian: Gimbutiene) revolutionized ideas of "Old Europe" and reinstated the Great Goddess in her rightful place before the onslaught of the Indo-European male ascendancy dethroned her and left women mere consorts and companions. Marija Gimbutas was the luckiest of scholars. She was the only twentieth-century scholar to have discovered and described an entire, unrecognized civilization. Marija Gimbutas One of the most renowned US archaeologists, Lithuanian-born Marija Alseikaite- Gimbutas (1921-94), created her own myth of extraordinariness. Like the goddess of light she describes in her work, she is acclaimed, respected, even adored. [1] Having opened the door to the archaeological past of “Old Europe”, she built a unique methodology for which she coined the term archaeomythological. She explored Baltic mythology in depth and, having revealed the merits of the matricentric – what she called “matristic” – culture became an icon of feminist ideology. In 1991, she received the Anisfield-Wolf prize for her book The Civilization of the Goddess: The World of Old Europe published in that year. The prize has been awarded in the United States since 1935 for the most outstanding research in the history of world culture.
