Newman 29 January 2008 2 Thesis Abstract The dissertation is a chiasmic reading of the works of Jean Genet and Emmanuel Levinas, examining the way they each address the relation to the Other in terms of ethics and subjectivity. Whereas a straightforward association between the two writers might seem paradoxical because of the differences in their approaches and rhetoric, a chiasmic reading allows intricate approaches, moments of proximity and departures to be read both conceptually and aesthetically. We show that these two writers share a tightly-woven discursive neighbourhood, and examine that neighbourhood through detailed analysis of various textual encounters.

Acknowledgments: Thank you to all the priests who have guided me and counseled me in the making of this book. In particular, Father Steven Tsichlis and his son, Chris, whose passion and knowledge for the Divine Liturgy are unmatched. Introduction I was born into and raised in the Orthodox Faith (the name Krantz was shortened from Karountzos by my grandparents). Growing up, I attended our Greek Orthodox Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Back then, nearly everything during the Liturgy was spoken in Greek (including the sermon!). I remember always pestering my mother, asking her what the priest was saying. As the years went by, I grew to love the feeling that attending the Liturgy gave me. I knew all the songs the choir sang in Greek; I loved the incense, icons, and candles.

  • 1 Amphipoda of the Northeast Pacific
Amphipoda of the Northeast Pacific (Equator to Aleutians, intertidal to abyss): VI. Corophioidea – a review Donald B. Cadien, LACSD 22 July 2004 (revised 5June2015) Preface The purpose of this review is to bring together information on all of the species reported to occur in the NEP fauna. It is not a straight path to the identification of your unknown animal. It is a resource guide to assist you in making the required identification in full knowledge of what the possibilities are. Never forget that there are other, as yet unreported species from the coverage area; some described, some new to science. The natural world is wonderfully diverse, and we have just scratched its surface. Introduction to the Corophioidea Placing the corophioids among the amphipods, and determining the relationships between members of the group have been a preoccupation of many workers for years. The group was quite an interesting problem for J. L. Barnard, who published a large paper revising it (J. L. Barnard 1973). His interpretations of various corophioids changed often over the years, and his final vision of them was presented in J. L. Barnard & Karaman 1991. What interested and frustrated him was the lack of clear dividing lines between the related families of this group. Every time a new genus was found, it was intermediate in some character states, blurring the lines between closely related families. This led him to combine all of these families into a united Corophiidae s.l.. Most other workers were not pleased with this arrangement, which discarded family concepts long used and useful.
