Keskityn analyysissäni Riordanin naishahmoista kahteen, Piper McLeaniin ja Annabeth Chaseen, ja pyrin osoittamaan, että Riordan käyttää kummankin tytön kehityskaarta positiivisena esimerkkinä naisten sankaruudesta ja voimaantumisesta. Käytän tutkimusmenetelmänäni lähilukua ja aineistonani koko viisiosaista kirjasarjaa, erityisesti Piperin ja Annabethin näkökulmasta kirjoitettuja lukuja. Tutkielmani teoriaosassa tutustun sankaruuteen eri näkökulmista ja tarkastelen esimerkiksi terminologiaa ja sankareiden tunnusmerkkejä. The Political Sociology and Anthropology of Evil: Tricksterology
“Because evil is a term fraught with religious overtones, it tends to be under- theorized in our largely secular contemporary culture. Yet something like evil continues to exist, arguably more forcefully today than ever, so the authors of this timely and important book assert. They argue boldly that understanding the continued presence of evil in the modern world requires reconceiving evil through the mythical figure of the trickster, a cross-cultural symbol that repre- sents the perennial temptation to ignore the inherent limits of human thought and action. Salvador Dalí and science, beyond mere curiosity Carme Ruiz Centre for Dalinian Studies Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres Pasaje a la Ciencia, no.13 (2010) What do Stephen Hawking, Ramon Llull, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, "Cosmic Glue", Werner Heisenberg, Watson and Crick, Dennis Gabor and Erwin Schrödinger have in common? The answer is simple: Salvador Dalí, a genial artist, who evolved amidst a multitude of facets, a universal Catalan who remained firmly attached to his home region, the Empordà. Salvador Dalí’s relationship with science began during his adolescence, for Dalí began to read scientific articles at a very early age. The artist uses its vocabulary in situations which we might in principle classify as non-scientific. That passion, which lasted throughout his life, was a fruit of the historical times that fell to him to experience — among the most fertile in the history of science, with spectacular technological advances. The painter’s library clearly reflected that passion: it contains a hundred or so books (with notes and comments in the margins) on various scientific aspects: physics, quantum mechanics, the origins of life, evolution and mathematics, as well as the many science journals he subscribed to in order to keep up to date with all the science news. Thanks to this, we can confidently assert that by following the work of Salvador Dalí we traverse an important period in 20th-century science, at least in relation to the scientific advances that particularly affected him. Among the painter’s conceptual preferences his major interests lay in the world of mathematics and optics. -

Human Settlements Discussion Paper Series Theme: Urban Change –4 The transition to a predominantly urban world and its underpinnings David Satterthwaite This is the 2007 version of an overview of urban change and a discussion of its main causes that IIED’s Human Settlements Group has been publishing since 1986. The first was Hardoy, Jorge E and David Satterthwaite (1986), “Urban change in the Third World; are recent trends a useful pointer to the urban future?”, Habitat International, Vol. 10, No. 3, pages 33–52. An updated version of this was published in chapter 8 of these authors’ 1989 book, Squatter Citizen (Earthscan, London). Further updates were published in 1996, 2003 and 2005 – and this paper replaces the working paper entitled The Scale of Urban Change Worldwide 1950–2000 and its Underpinnings, published in 2005. Part of the reason for this updated version is the new global dataset produced by the United Nations Population Division on urban populations and on the populations of the largest cities. Unless otherwise stated, the statistics for global, regional, national and city populations in this paper are drawn from United Nations (2006), World Urbanization Prospects: the 2005 Revision, United Nations Population Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, CD-ROM Edition – Data in digital form (POP/DB/WUP/Rev.2005), United Nations, New York. Newman 29 January 2008 2 Thesis Abstract The dissertation is a chiasmic reading of the works of Jean Genet and Emmanuel Levinas, examining the way they each address the relation to the Other in terms of ethics and subjectivity. Whereas a straightforward association between the two writers might seem paradoxical because of the differences in their approaches and rhetoric, a chiasmic reading allows intricate approaches, moments of proximity and departures to be read both conceptually and aesthetically. We show that these two writers share a tightly-woven discursive neighbourhood, and examine that neighbourhood through detailed analysis of various textual encounters. -

It welcomes clear, rigorous and original submissions that address concrete issues of public concern as well as more abstract theoretical questions. It also has the distinctive aims of (a) fostering work drawing on a variety of disciplines within the social and natural sciences, including biology, economics, history, and psychology; and (b) promoting dialogue between the Anglophone and non-Anglophone worlds. We invite submissions of articles up to 10,000 words, discussion notes up to 5,000 words, and replies and exchanges not exceeding 3,000 words. All published submissions will have undergone blind review, and the journal will notify authors of submitted pieces about the progress of their submission within six weeks. Although LEAP accepts exclusively submissions in English, the journal strongly encourages submissions from authors who also write in languages other than English, and will always strive to ensure that their work is assessed on the basis of its content and not primarily its mode of expression.
