File 2 – Untitled Description – document titled ‘Disaster’ Notes Contains a stapled, typed, five-page document titled ‘Disaster’, written by Phil Donaldson (undated). Donaldson retells the story of the 1902 Mt Kembla Mine Disaster and its impact on the community with a focus on his great grandfather, George Bertram Adams, a miner who survived the disaster. The document includes reproductions of two family photos with captions.

File 3 – Aitken Description – research notes relating to the Aitken Family Notes This file includes notes and resources relating to the Aitken Family history, printed email exchanges, printed family photos, a draft family history by Paul Treanor and a bound copy of ‘The Spirits of Windy Gully: an account of the Mt. Kembla Mining Disaster’ by Paul Treanor, great- grandson of John and Mary Aitken and great nephew of Henry Aitken.

File 4 – Annesley Description – family history notes on the Annesley family Notes Contains a small number of photocopied documents, including death and birth transcriptions for Prosper James Annesley (who died in the 1902 Mt Kembla explosion).

File 5 – Baird Description – file pertaining to the Baird family Notes Contains one envelope with one (non-original) family photograph with annotations. Photo depicts Ossie and Ethel Baird with young children Tom and Ossie Jnr and has the caption ‘taken September 1919 leaving England for .’

File 6 – Barrett Description – family history notes on the Barrett family Notes Contains: - A bound, typed, 79-page document titled ‘George Barrett’s Memories of Growing Up in Mt Kembla and Kembla Heights’. - A blue, hardcover notebook containing ‘A few memories from the first 27 years of my life when a resident of Kembla Heights & Mt Kembla 1935-1962, by George Barrett (a handwritten draft of the above). - A manila folder containing approximately 9 photos of and family scenes. Not originals, but some clear images. Includes family images, images of 1890s Sunday School Picnic, the old Post Office at Kembla Heights, a good copy of a B&W photo of four women (Mrs Gardiner, Mrs Thomson, Mrs Hunt and Mrs Wilson) standing in front of a banner reading ‘Mount Kembla Ladies Tribute to the memory of Norman Brown, killed in the Rothbury Riot. Banner was created for the 1930 Wollongong May Day Parade (see South Coast Times, 9 May 1930, p 16.) - Newspaper clipping (date and publication unknown) with image and brief blurb of Vincent and Lina Parkinson and their 5 children. The Parkinson Family owned and operated Parkinson’s Cordial Family. - 1 x copy of an article titled ‘Orchids out in time for Spring’, by Antony Field in the Wollongong Advertiser, 02.09.2015. The article is about Phil Barrett and the Illawarra Native Orchid Society.

File 7 – Bartly Description – file pertaining to the Bartly family Notes Contains one envelope with two copies of one B&W family photograph of three children. One copy is laminated and the other is printed on paper. The three children are identified as Irene Bartley, Harold Cunningham and Jan Bull. File titled the name is spelled ‘Bartly’ but spelled ‘Bartley’ on the handwritten note on the photo. See also ‘Bull’ and ‘Cunningham’ family files for same image.

File 8 – T.L. Bates Description – file pertaining to Thomas Bates Notes Contains one A4 plastic sleeve with copies of official documents pertaining to the career of mining inspector Thomas Bates who survived the 1902 Mt Kembla mine disaster.

File 9 – Benjamin Description – file pertaining to the Benjamin family Notes Contains: - A4 envelope with a laminated copy of a B&W photograph of two older people captioned ‘Honora Slow & Jim? Benjamin, and a photocopy of this photograph. - A4 plastic sleeve containing 5 photocopies of black and white photographs (poor quality). Note in file reads ‘From Noel Murray’s collection. Stones Road Mt Kembla, Picnic beside American Creek, scans from different negatives’. - A4 plastic sleeve containing a photocopied page from a newspaper or newsletter with a highlighted entry about local ‘history sleuths’ Mary Quince and Bert Matthews, a colour photographic print of an image of Mt Kembla, and a printed colour copy of the same image on paper. - A4 plastic sleeve containing four typed pages dated March 6th 2007 and titled ‘First Fleeters’. This document details the lives of Mary Quince’s maternal great-grandparents Robert Benjamin and Susannah Stanbridge. Robert was a First Fleet convict who came to Australia on Scarborough and settled on land at American Creek. Susannah’s family migrated to the Illawarra in the late 1850s. Benjamin Road, Mt Kembla, is named after the family. - Large family tree sketched out on multiple pieces of paper adhered and folded up.

File 10 – Boatswain Description – file pertaining to the Boatswain family Notes Contains one A4 envelope titled ‘Boatswain’ with a newspaper article titled ‘Village Casts its Spell’, from the , 28.08.1986, page 13. The article is about the village and the Boatswain family who had purchased the general store three years prior.

File 11 – Brennan Description – file pertaining to the Brennan family Notes Contains one A4 plastic sleeve with a printed copy of the Potter family tree from Ancestry.com and a handwritten note.

File 12 – Brisbane Description – file pertaining to the Brisbane family Notes Contains plastic file titled ‘Brisbane Family History: Information from Heather Collis, Noel Rutty & Karl Munn’. File contains brief family history notes, copies of some family photographs and printed email exchanges.

File 13 – Broadhead Description – file pertaining to Arthur Broadhead Notes Contains three printed email exchanges dated to December 2010 containing information on Arthur Broadhead who was killed at the Old Bulli Colliery on 18th January 1934.

File 14 – Brown Description – file pertaining to the Brown family Notes Contains an A4 plastic sleeve with a photocopy of a 12-page document See eHive record titled ‘Specifications for Mr HH Brown’s Cottage and Store at Mt Kembla’. 2017.37 for original Dated 30th March 1904, with a handwritten post-it note that reads ‘copy document. original in large folder’.

File 15 – Brownlee Description – file pertaining to the Brownlee family Notes Contains: - Various comprehensive documents and newspaper clippings relating to the history of John O’Halloran’s Mount Kembla Hotel and the O’Halloran, Brownlee, Murphy and Wilson Families. - Also includes copies of some colour and B&W family photos

File 16 – Bull Description – file pertaining to the Bull family Notes Contains an A4 envelope titled ‘Bull’ with two black and white Same image as that in photocopies of photos, one of three children in costume, one of five file 7. children in costume. These are the same two images as appear in the ‘Bartley/ Bartly’ and ‘Cunningham’ family history files.

File 17 – Carmody Description – file pertaining to Josephine Carmody/ Condon Notes Contains: - Laminated copy of a B&W photograph of Josephine Condon in later life. - Two museum labels: one for a silver teapot presented to local schoolteacher Miss Carmody on the occasion of her marriage from the parents and citizens of Mt Kembla and the other for an extract of a letter written by Josephine 52 years after teaching at Mt Kembla. (Both objects loaned for display and presumably returned as not on acquisition list.) - Laminated photocopy of above-mentioned handwritten letter. - One-page document detailing Miss Carmody’s life, her time teaching at Mt Kembla from shortly after the 1902 mine disaster until 1915, her marriage and move to Albion Park.

File 18 – Chinnock Description – file pertaining to the Chinnock family Notes Contains comprehensive notes, printed photocopies of photos and copies of records relating to the Chinnock family history. Includes an oral history transcript of an interview with Wilfred Chinnock conducted by Georgina Element in February 2010 which covers Wilfred’s childhood growing up in a coal mining community in the 1920s and 1930s and his work in the mines, pit ponies etc.

File 19 – Cleland Description – file pertaining to the Clelland/ Cleland/ Clelands family Notes Contains: - Printed email exchange from 2010 about the Cleland family history. Copies of family photographs (copies) loose, including: -Clelands family & home, ca.1895 (also online via WCC Library P13/P13038) -Clelands family photo ca.1930 -Photo of a garden seat made by Andrew Rae and Andrew Cleland ca. 1902. Rae was the surface and engineer and Cleland the mine carpenter. - Typed and handwritten document titled ‘Growing UP in Kembla Heights’ by Jean White, 2004. A4 envelope containing seven photographs, one original: - Copy of wedding photo of Duncan Clelland and Terminous Goodlet - Copy of a photo of Agnes, Jean and Duncan Junior ‘Mac’ Clelland as children - Colour photograph of three miners underground, 1980s? - Copy of a photograph of 6 women (Lill Bostock, Termi Clelland, Sybil ?, Mrs Brown, Ange and Jean) camping at Stuart Park, Christmas late 1940s/ 1950. - Copy of a photograph of Duncan Clelland, Mr Jarvie (mine manager) and two unknown men. - Damaged but original photographic postcard of Mr Jarvie (the mine On eHive B4.F19.9 manager) and family in front of the mine manager’s house. Inscription on the back includes the date ‘1920’. Cropped version available online via WCC Library P13/P13027. - Copy of a photograph showing Duncan Cleland as a teenager and his mother and father (Terminous and Andrew) and an unknown man in front of their house on Harry Graham Drive.

File 20 – Collis Description – file pertaining to the Collis family Notes Contains plastic folder titled ‘Heather Collis – Lance Ray: Donated by Heather and Lance to C Curtis’ This folder contains detailed notes about the Collis and Ray families. Some images of family and mining scenes (not originals).

File 21 – Cook Description – file pertaining to the Cook family Notes Contains three pages of correspondence between John Braun and Clare Curtis from 2012 and 2013 regarding enquiries into the Cook family history. An A4 envelope contains a copy of the death certificate for Mary Jane Cook, 14th August 1908.

File 22 – Cunningham Description – file pertaining to the Cunningham family Notes Contains: - an A4 envelope titled ‘Cunningham’ with two black and white photocopies of photos, one of three children in costume, one of four children in costume. These are the same two images as appear in the ‘Bartley/ Bartly’ and ‘Bull’ family history files. - A newspaper article titled ‘Bark Huts Were Home to Miners’, by Ethel Hayton in the Illawarra Mercury, 24th July 1972. Primarily focuses on Mt Pleasant, and includes an image of the 1908 Mt Pleasant Junior Football Team, of which Billy Cunningham was a member.

File 23 – Doherty Description – file pertaining to William Doherty Notes Contains a one-page document titled ‘Links Between St Paul’s and Mt Kembla’, about two Mt Kembla miners, William Doherty and Francis Peter Brownlee, who are buried at St Paul’s Cemetery, Albion Park. A copy of this document is also in the Brownlee family file.

File 24 – Dungey Description – file pertaining to the Dungey family Notes Contains comprehensive notes on the Dungey family history, particularly regarding Francis Dungey Snr who died in the 1902 Mt Kembla Mine Explosion, and whose watch was on loan to MKMHI. Numerous family photos (not originals) with notes and captions.

File 25 – Edwards Description – file pertaining to the Edwards family Notes Contains copies of two birth certificates (Leah Edwards 1855 and Eliza Edwards 1865) and two death certificates (Aaron Edwards 1889 and Eliza Edwards 1898).

File 26 – Egan Description – file pertaining to the Egan family Notes Contains comprehensive notes on the history of the Egan family and a CD with the following note: ‘From Clare Curtis My Copy. Heather Collis Photo Collection Pat Cundy Morriss-Egan and Williams, Brisbane Thomas Photos’. Copies of some of these photos also appear in Box 4, File 20.

Numerous printed copies of family history photos.

NB: Walter Morriss and his son Thomas Patrick Morris were both killed in the Mt Kembla Mine explosion in 1902. Brothers Thomas, Michael, Edward and Dennis Egan were all killed in the explosion. Local Patricia Cundy (nee Smith) is the granddaughter of Dan Eagan who survived the disaster. (Dan married May Morriss, hence the connection between the two families). ‘Morriss’ sometimes spelt ‘Morris’.

File 27 – Evans Description – file pertaining to David Evans Notes Contains a printed copy of an obituary for Mr David Evans, ‘one of the heroes of the Mt. Kembla explosion’, dated 7th January 1916.

File 28 – Findley Description – file pertaining to the Findley family Notes Contains a printed copy of marriage notices for LANE-FINDLEY and WOODS-FINDLEY weddings in the South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus, dated 30th November 1928.

File 29 – Fishlock Description – file pertaining to the Fishlock family Notes Contains: - Three page copy of an extracted from Life at Cordeaux River , J.L. McNamara (2000). Chapter 3, ‘The First Settlers: The Fishlocks’, pages 12-14. - Typed two-page document dated 13.04.08 detailing the history of Robert Fishlock (1871-1948) and Eliza Fishlock (1870-1943). - Plastic folder titled ‘Fishlock Family: Donations by Joyce Carr and Kathy Houghton nee McNamara, collected by Claire Curtis’ containing notes on the Fishlock family history and some copies of family photos. - Snaplock bag containing five beautiful original photographs. File 30 – Foye Description – file pertaining to the Foye family Notes Contains a four-page document (two copies) titled ‘William John Foye and Mary McConnell’. Detailing their marriage and migration to Australia in 1909.

File 31 – Frost Description – file pertaining to the Frost family Notes Contains printed email correspondence regarding the Frost family history, a five page document titled ‘Descendants of John Frost’, an eight page document from the Illawarra Historical Society bulletin about the Mt Kembla Disaster Commemoration (undated) with information about Matthew and Adam Frost’s involvement in the escape and rescue efforts. Also contains a laminated photograph, a Sydney Mail article on the 1902 disaster and three newspaper articles on GP Adam Frost who was in Bali during the 2005 bombings and assisted victims, and was subsequently named Newcastle Citizen of the Year (2006).
