Sunday | November 20, 2016 The Rich Man and Lazarus the King Sunday

"In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that– and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison–you do not know God at all. As long as you are proud, you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you." C.S. Lewis

Welcome! Bienvenido!

We’re glad you’ve chosen to worship at Third! We look forward to meeting and getting to know you.

Prelude "God of Grace" Jeff Hummel (Paul Manz) Welcome and Announcements Preparation

Leader: Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. People: Amen.

Let’s quiet our hearts in silent preparation for worship.

† Call to Worship From Psalm 24:7-10 Leader: Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. People: Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Leader: Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. People: Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty—he is the King of glory.

Come, Holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour: thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart, And ne’er from us depart, Spirit of power.

To thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be Hence, evermore! Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see, And to eternity love and adore!

5 O PRAISE HIM

6 7 CONFESSING God in vites us to be honest with him about ourselves. Song of Confession "Mercy" Sanctuary Choir (Courtney/Boersma)

I dare not lift my guilty eyes. I hide my lips in trembling shame. And in the darkness of my , I shrink from your rekindling flame. Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison; have mercy.

In mercy, cover me with grace and blot out my iniquity. Renew my heart and wash me clean; grant with your pardon purity. Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison; have mercy.

In equal measure of your love you promise mercy, Tender compassion to the one who seeks your face. A broken heart, a fainting soul, a contrite spirit Together cry for your forgiveness and your grace. Against you only have I sinned. My deeds are evil in your sight. Of your forgiveness let me sing, and in my singing take delight.

Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison; have mercy, Have mercy, have mercy.

8 Silent Confession † Words of Comfort Leader: For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, proclaiming Jesus Lord and King of all. People: Thanks be to God!

Prayer of Illumination Scripture Reading :19-31, ESV

19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the to 's side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Leader: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God!

Pray for the thousands of Saudi young people studying at American colleges and for Christians to show hospitality (Saudis comprise the largest student block at VCU). • Pray for the three dozen foreign workers who quietly represent the good news of Jesus through relational forms of witness. Pray for Westerners and other foreign workers to fill the job vacancies that enable Christians to live in-country.

18 The Gift of the Kingdom 2016 Stewardship Season “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the Kingdom.” :32

We believe the local church is one of God’s great vessels of hope for the world. Through the local church, the gospel is proclaimed, community is formed, individuals grow, and the Kingdom is embodied. To that end, every year we look at what it will cost us in the coming year to live as the particular local church God has called us to be. The staff and elders have carefully projected our budget for the coming year, and now in this season we come together to express our commitment of faith in pledging our financial resources to God through the work of this local church. Our pledges help us determine the accuracy of the budget and ensure our financial commitments to our 75+ mission partners. If you would still like to make a commitment to Third for the new year, we welcome you to use the cards in the pews and drop them in the offering plate or return them to the church office. As we make our commitments, we pray for the Spirit and power of God to use our gifts to bring a harvest for his Kingdom. “Since you excel in so many ways – in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm and your love from us – I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NLT).

2017 Projected Budget: $3,291,024
