WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil was born in Goseong, on September 14, 1960; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil has led many South Korean summer expeditions to Mt. Aconcagua where he has climbed South America's highest many times; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil also carried out a successful mission on ; and

WHEREAS, in 2000 Urn Hong-Gil finally reached (8,611m) which means his team completed the whole mission to go up to 14 peaks higher than 8,000 meters in altitude; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil has led successful expeditions up in 2002 and 2003 and he has climbed both the North and South sides of the Everest. Urn Hon-Gil stood on top of Everest three times; and

WHEREAS, in 2000, Urn Hong-Gil is the first South Korean and the seventh climber in the world to hold the distinction of the Himalayan Crown when he scaled all the 14 of above 8,000m in h~ight; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil has been named 'Man of the Year' by UNESCO of Korea in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil is the first person that has climbed the 16 highest points on Earth. These are Everest (1988), (1993), (1993), (1995), (1995), (1995), (1996), (1996), I (1997), Gasherbrum II (1997), (1999), (1999), Kangchenjunga (2000), K2 (2000), Yalung Kang (2004), (2007); and

WHEREAS, on December 13,2007, Urn Hong-Gil has succeeded in reaching the of Vinson , the highest peak of Antarctica; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil is the Professor Emeritus at SangMyung University in Korea; and

WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil serves as the Ambassador for Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under the auspices of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Korea; and WHEREAS, Urn Hong-Gil has established the Urn Hong Gil Human Foundation in 2008 to promote environmental conservancy, sustainability and educating youth by building schools in remote and mountainous areas of :

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this resolution, the Los 11 Angeles City Council hereby declares July 15' , 2011 as Urn Hong-Gil Day in the City of Los Angeles. May he be celebrated on this day for his outstanding career and his ongoing efforts to provide educational opportunities for the Himalayan children to learn and respect nature.
