Hadiths on Dhikr

“I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he mentions Me within himself, I mention him within Myself. If he mentions Me in a gathering, I mention him in a gathering better than that” (Bukhrı from Abü Hurayra).

“Oh people, verily Allah has hosts of that descend upon the gatherings of dhikr on this earth. So graze in the gardens of !” They asked, “And what are those gardens of Paradise?” He  replied, “The gatherings of dhikr. So remember Allah morning and evening” (Bazzr & al‐˘kim from Jbir).

“Allah Almighty has traveling angels scanning the earth, seeking gatherings of dhikr. When they come upon a gathering of dhikr, they enshroud them with their wings and [due to their vast number and size, stack upon one another until] they reach the heavens…Allah then says, “Bear witness that I have forgiven them” (Muslim from Abü Hurayra).

“No group of people gather for the remembrance of Allah except that the angels surround them closely, mercy envelops them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them among those that are with Him” (Muslim from Abü Hurayra).

The Prophet  came upon some Companions sitting in a circle, making dhikr and asked, “What has made you sit like this?” They said, “We are remembering Allah and praising Him.” He  said, “Jibrıl had just come to me and informed me that Allah  is showing you off to the angels” (Muslim & Tirmidhı from Muwiya).

“Make so much dhikr that people call you insane” (al‐˘kim & Bayhaqı from Abü Saıd al‐Khudrı).

The Prophet  passed by two gatherings of Companions. In one, they were calling unto Allah and supplicating to Him. In the other

they were teaching knowledge. He  said, “Both are full of goodness, and one is better than the other (i.e. the circle of knowledge)” (Baqı b. Makhlad from Abd Allah b. Amr b. al‐‡ß).

“No people gather for the remembrance of Allah except that a caller calls out from the Heavens saying to them, „Rise forgiven! For I have changed your bad deeds into good deeds!‟” (Bayhaqı from Abd Allah b. al‐Mughaffal).

The Lord Supreme shall say on the Day of Judgement, “Today the great multitude shall know the recipients of bounty.” Someone asked, “Who are the recipients of bounty oh Messenger of Allah ?” He  replied, “The gatherings of dhikr in the ” (Bayhaqı from Abü Saıd al‐Khudrı).

Ibn al‐Arda  said, “I went with the Messenger of Allah  one night and we passed by the masjid. There was a man there raising his voice in dhikr. I said, „Perhaps he is showing off.‟ The Prophet  said, „No; he is enraptured in prayer (awwh)‟” (Bayhaqı from Ibn al‐Arda).

There was a man raising his voice in supplication whereupon someone said, “If only he would lower his voice.” The Messenger  said, “Leave him, for he is yearning (awwh)” (Bayhaqı from Jbir).

The Messenger  said to a Laqıt b. ∑abira, “Shall I not inform you of the main pillar of the whole affair by which you will achieve the best of this world and the next?” He said, “Yes please do!” He  said, “Keep to the gatherings of dhikr. And when you are alone, keep your tongue moving with the dhikr of Allah” (Aßbahnı).

Surat Ya Sin Translation

1Ya Sin.2 By the wise Quran. 3You [] are truly one of the messengers sent 4 on a straight path, 5with a revelation from the Almighty, the Lord of Mercy, 6to warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, and so they are unaware. 7The verdict has been passed against most of them, for they refuse to believe. 8[It is as if] We had placed [iron] collars around their necks, right up to their chins so that their heads are forced up 9and set barriers before them and behind them, blocking their vision: they cannot see. 10It is all the same to them whether you warn them or not: they will not believe. 11You can warn only those who will follow the Quran and hold the Merciful One in awe, though they cannot see Him: give such people the glad news of forgiveness and a noble reward.

12We shall certainly bring the dead back to life, and We record what they send ahead of them as well as what they leave behind: We keep an account of everything in a clear Record. 13Give them the example of the people to whose town messengers came. 14We sent two messengers but they rejected both. Then We reinforced them with a third. 15They said, „Truly, we are messengers to you,‟ 16but they answered, „You are only men like ourselves. The Lord of Mercy has sent nothing; you are just lying.‟ They said, „Our Lord knows that we have been sent to you. 17Our duty is only to deliver the message to you.‟ 18But they answered, „We think you are nothing but an an evil omen. If you do not stop, we shall stone you, and inflict a painful torment on you.‟ 19The messengers said, „The evil omen is within yourselves. Why do you take it as an evil omen when you are reminded of the Truth? You are going too far!‟

20Then, from the furthest part of the city, a man came running. He said, „My people, follow the messengers. 21Follow them: they are not asking you to reward them and they are rightly guided. 22Why should I not worship the One who created me? It is to Him that you will be returned. 23How could I take besides Him any other Allahs, whose intercession will not help me and who would not be able to

save me if the Lord of Mercy wished to harm me? 24Then I would clearly be in the wrong. 25I believe in your Lord, so listen to me.‟

26 He was told mockingly, „Enter the Garden.‟ So he said, „If only my people knew 27how my Lord has forgiven me and set me among the highly honoured.‟ 28After him We did not send any army from heaven against his people, nor were We about to: 29there was just one blast, and they fell down lifeless. 30Alas for human beings! Whenever a messenger comes to them they ridicule him. 31Do they not see how many generations We have destroyed before them, none of whom will ever come back to them? 32[Yet] all of them will be brought before Us.

33There is a sign for them in the lifeless earth: We give it life and We produce grain from it for them to eat; 34We have put gardens of date palms and grapes in the earth, and We have made springs of water gush out of it 35so that they could eat its fruit. It was not their own hands that made all this. How can they not give thanks? 36Glory be to Him who created all the pairs of things that the earth produces, as well as themselves and other things they do not know about.

37The night is also a sign for them: We strip the daylight from it, and– lo and behold!– they are in darkness. 38The sun, too, runs its determined course laid down for it by the Almighty, the All Knowing. 39We have determined phases for the moon until finally it becomes like an old date‐stalk. 40The sun cannot overtake the moon, nor can the night outrun the day: each floats in [its own] orbit.

41Another sign for them is that We carried their seed in the laden Ark (of ), 42and We have made similar things for them to ride in. 43If We wished, We could drown them, and there would be no one to help them: they could not be saved. 44Only by Our mercy could they be reprieved to enjoy life for a while. 45Yet when they are told, „Beware of what lies before and behind you, so that you may be given mercy,‟ 46they ignore every single sign that comes to them from their Lord, 47and when they are told, „Give to others out of what Allah has provided for you,‟ the disbelievers say to the

believers, „Why should we feed those that Allah could feed if He wanted? You must be deeply misguided.‟

48And they say, „When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say is true?‟ 49But all they are waiting for is a single blast that will overtake them while they are still arguing with each other. 50They will have no time to make bequests, nor will they have the chance to return to their own people. 51The Trumpet will be sounded and– lo and behold!– they will rush out to their Lord from their graves. 52They will say, „Alas for us! Who has resurrected us from our resting places?‟ [They will be told], „This is what the Lord of Mercy promised, and the messengers told the truth.‟ 53It was just one single blast and then– lo and behold!– they were all brought before Us. 54„Today, no will be wronged in the least: you will only be repaid for your deeds. 55The people of Paradise today are happily occupied– 56they and their spouses– seated on couches in the shade. 57There they have fruit and whatever they ask for.

58“Peace,” a word from the Lord of Mercy. 59But step aside today, you guilty ones. 60Children of , did I not command you not to serve , for he was your sworn enemy, 61but to serve Me? This is the straight path. 62He has led great numbers of you astray. Did you not use your reason? 63So this is the Fire that you were warned against. 64Enter it today, because you went on ignoring [my commands].‟ 65On that Day We shall seal up their mouths, but their hands will speak to Us, and their feet bear witness to everything they have done. 66If it had been Our will, We could have taken away their sight. They would have struggled to find the way, but how could they have seen it? 67If it had been Our will, We could have paralysed them where they stood, so that they could not move forward or backward.

68If We extend anyone‟s life, We reverse his development (i.e. the young become strong, then in old age return to weakness). Do they not use their reason? 69We have not taught the Prophet poetry,a nor could he ever have been a poet. 70This is a revelation, an illuminating Quran to warn anyone who is truly alive, so that Allah‟s verdict may be passed against the disbelievers.

71Can they not see how, among the things made by Our hands, We have created livestock they control, 72and made them obedient, so that some can be used for riding, some for food, 73some for other benefits, and some for drink? Will they not give thanks? 74Yet they have taken other Allahs besides Allah to help them, 75though these could not do so even if they called a whole army of them together!

76So [Prophet] do not be distressed at what they say: We know what they conceal and what they reveal. 77Can man not see that We created him from a drop of fluid? Yet– lo and behold!– he disputes openly, 78producing arguments against Us, forgetting his own creation. He says, „Who can give life back to bones after they have decayed?‟ 79Say, „He who created them in the first place will give them life again: He has full knowledge of every act of creation.

80It is He who produces fire for you out of the green tree– lo and behold!– and from this you kindle fire. 81Is He who created the heavens and earth not able to create the likes of these people? Of course He is! He is the All Knowing Creator: 82when He wills something to be, His way is to say, “Be”– and it is! 83So glory be to Him in whose Hand lies control over all things. It is to Him that you will all be brought back.‟

Surat al-Mulk Translation

1Exalted is He who holds all control in His hands; who has power over all things; 2who created death and life to test you [people] and reveal which of you does best––He is the Mighty, the Forgiving; 3who created the seven heavens, one above the other. You will not see any flaw in what the Lord of Mercy creates. Look again! Can you see any flaw? 4Look again! And again! Your sight will turn back to you, weak and defeated.

5We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them [missiles] for stoning for whom We have also prepared the torment of a blazing fire. 6For those who defy their Lord We have prepared the torment of : an evil destination. 7They will hear it drawing in its breath when they are thrown in. It blazes forth, 8almost bursting with rage.

Its keepers will ask every group that is thrown in, „Did no one come to warn you?‟ 9They will reply, „Yes, a warner did come to us, but we did not believe him. We said, “ has revealed nothing: you are greatly misguided.”‟ 10They will say, „If only we had listened, or reasoned, we would not be with the inhabitants of the blazing fire,‟ and 11they will confess their sins. Away with the inhabitants of the blazing fire! 12But there is forgiveness and a great reward for those who fear their Lord though they cannot see Him.

13Whether you keep your words secret or state them openly, He knows the contents of every heart. 14How could He who created not know His own creation, when He is the Most Subtle, the All Aware? 15It is He who has made the earth manageable for you–– travel its regions; eat His provision–and to Him you will be resurrected.

16Are you sure that He who is in Heaven will not make the earth swallow you up with a violent shudder? 17Are you sure that He

who is in Heaven will not send a whirlwind to pelt you with stones?

You will come to know what My warning means. 18Those who went before them also disbelieved– how terrible was My condemnation! 19Do they not see the birds above them spreading and closing their wings? It is only the Lord of Mercy who holds them up: He watches over everything.

20What force can help you if the Lord of Mercy does not? The disbelievers are truly deluded. 21Who can provide for you if He withholds His provision? Yet they persist in their insolence and their avoidance of the Truth. 22Who is better guided: someone who falls on his face, or someone who walks steadily on a straight path?

23Say [Prophet], „It is He who brought you into being, He who endowed you with hearing, sight, and understanding– what small thanks you give!‟ 24Say, „It is He who scattered you throughout the earth, He to whom you will be gathered.‟ 25They say, „If what you say is true, when will this promise be fulfilled?‟ 26Say, „God alone has knowledge of this: my only duty is to give clear warning.‟ 27When they see it close at hand, the disbelievers‟ faces will be gloomy, and it will be said, „This is what you were calling for.‟

28Say, „Just think–regardless of whether God destroys me and my followers or has mercy on us– who will protect the disbelievers from an agonizing torment?‟

29Say, „He is the Lord of Mercy; we believe in Him; we put our trust in Him. You will come to know in time who is in obvious error.‟ 30Say, „Just think: if all your water were to sink deep into the earth who could give you flowing water in its place?‟

Chapter Four Universals

The Burda of Imam al-Busiri

Mawlya ßallı wa sallim d√iman abadan. Al ˛abıbika khayr al‐khalqi kullihimi. My Lord send blessings and peace always forever Upon your beloved, thebest of all creation

Amin tadhakuri jırnin bi dhı salami. Mazajta daman jar min muqlatin bidami. Is it because of your memory of the neighbours of Dhi‐Salam (a village), that tears mixed with blood are wept?

Am habbat al‐rıhu min tilq√i k†imatin. Aw awma∂al‐barqu fil‐†alm√ı min i∂ami. Or is it due to the breeze blowing from Ka÷ima (another village), or it is lightning from the darkness of the I∂am?

Fa m li aynayka in qulta kfuf hamat. Wa m li qalbika in qult astafiq yahimi.

What happened to your eyes? The more you tell them to stop, the more they cry. And your heart? The more you tell it to come to its senses, the more it is distracted.

Aya˛sibu al‐ßabbu ann al‐˛ubba munkatimun. M bayna munsajimin minhu wa mu∂†arimi. Does the lover think that his love can be concealed, while his eyes are shedding tears and his heart is glowing?

Law l al‐haw lam turiq daman al †alalin. Wa l ariqta li dhikr al‐bni wal‐alami. Had it not been for love, you wouldn‟t have shed tears at the ruins of your beloved. Nor would you become restless at the rememb‐ rance of the cypress tree (beauty) or the lofty mountains (majesty).

Fa kayfa tunkiru ˛ubban bada m shahidat. Bihi alayka udülul‐damı wal‐saqami. How do you deny love after the testimony borne against you by two upright witnesses: your tears and your love‐sickness.

Wa athbat al‐wajdu kha††ay abratin wa ∂an.

Mithlal bahrial khaddayka wal‐anami. Love has etched two lines of grief on your cheeks (from tears) like yellow rose and the reddish tree.

Naam sar †ayfu man ahw fa arraqanı. Wal‐˛ubbu yatari∂ul‐ladhdhti bil‐alami. Yes! Thoughts of the beloved came to me at night and kept me awake. Love transforms pleasure into pain.

q

Y l√imı fil‐hawl‐udhriyyi madhiratan. Minnı ilayka wa law anßafta lam talumi. Oh you who blame me for my love, pardon me. I say to you: if you were fair, you would not blame me.

Fa inna ammratı bil‐sü√i m ittaa†at. Min jahlih bi nadhır al‐shaybi wal‐harami. Verily my soul that commands to evil, did not heed the advice due to its ignorance that gray hair and old age were warning signs.

Fa l tarumm bil‐maßi kasra shahwatih. Inn al‐†ama yuqawı shahwat al‐nahimi. Don‟t try to subdue your lust through other sins. Witout doubt, food only increases sensual desires.

Wal‐nafsu kal‐†ifli inn tuhmilhu shabb al. ˘ubb al‐ra∂ı wa inn taf†imhu yanfa†imi. Your ego is like a child when breastfed. It loves suckling but when you wean it, it will stop.

Astaghfirullha min qawlin bi l amalin. Laqad nasabtu bihi naslan li dhı uqumi. I seek forgiveness from Allah from preaching what I do not practice. This is like claiming offspring from a barren woman.

Amartuk al‐khayra lkin ma√tamartu bihi, Wa mstaqamtu fam qawlı laka istaqimi.. I command you to do good, but I do not command myself to do the same. I was not steadfast in this religion so what is the use of my saying to you, “Be steadfast”?

Wa shadda min saghabin a˛sh√ahu wa †aw. Ta˛t al‐˛ijrati kash˛an mutraf al‐adami. He tied and folded (a rope around his stomach) on account of hunger, tied to it a stone beneath which is his delicate skin.

Wa rawadathu al‐jiblul‐shummu min dhahabi. An nafsihi fa arha ayyam shamami. The high mountains of gold tried to tempt him towards it, but he was completely disinclined due to his spiritual power.

Wa akkadat zuhdahu fıh ∂aruratuhu. Inn al‐∂arürata l tadü all‐ißami. His piety increased inspite of his needs. Verily, need can never prevail over infallibility.

Wa kayfa tadü ill‐duny ∂aruratu man. Law lhu lam tukhrajil‐duny min al‐adami. How can the necessities of such a noble personality incline him towards this world. Had it not been for him, this world would not have been brought out of non‐existence.
