Dr. Ir. EENY-170 Ladybirds, Ladybird beetles, Lady Beetles, Ladybugs of Florida, Coleoptera: Coccinellidae1 J. H. Frank R. F. Mizell, III2 Introduction Ladybird is a name that has been used in England for more than 600 years for the European beetle Coccinella septempunctata. As knowledge about insects increased, the name became extended to all its relatives, members of the beetle family Coccinellidae. Of course these insects are not birds, but butterflies are not flies, nor are dragonflies, stoneflies, mayflies, and fireflies, which all are true common names in folklore, not invented names. The lady for whom they were named was "the Virgin Mary," and common names in other European languages have the same association (the German name Marienkafer translates Figure 1. Adult Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus, the to "Marybeetle" or ladybeetle). Prose and poetry sevenspotted lady beetle. We can but hope that newspaper writers will desist from generalizing them In the USA, the name ladybird was popularly all as "the ladybird" and thus deluding the public into americanized to ladybug, although these insects are believing that there is only one species. • Scarab Beetles in Human Culture
Coleopterists Society Monograph Number 5:85–101. 2006. SCARAB BEETLES IN HUMAN CULTURE BRETT C. RATCLIFFE Systematics Research Collections University of Nebraska Lincoln, NE 68588-0514, U.S.A. [email protected] Abstract The use of scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) by primarily pre- and non-industrial peoples throughout the world is reviewed. These uses consist of (1) religion and folklore, (2) folk medicine, (3) food, and (4) regalia and body ornamentation. The use of scarabs in religion or cosmology, once widespread in ancient Egypt, exists only rarely today in other cultures. Scarabs have a minor role in folk medicine today although they may have been more important in the past. The predominant utilization of these beetles today, and probably in the past as well, is as food with emphasis on the larval stage. Lastly, particularly large or brightly colored scarabs (or their parts) are used (mostly in the New World) to adorn the body or as regalia. If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in the common hours.—Thoreau This paper is warmly dedicated to Henry Howden in celebration of his many long years of dedicated field work in the Neotropics and the many fine paperson scarab systematics that flowed from his exploration and research. Henry’s illustrious career has added immeasurably to our knowledge of all things scarabaeoid. His students and colleagues have all benefited from his mentoring, advice, and wealth of knowledge. For many decades, he has been considered Mr.

Abstract: Studies on Pipunculid flies in their natural environment are presented. Certain places are described, which proved to be astonishingly rieh in species. Some remarkable associating insect species are listed. As far as investigated comments on the behaviour of the adult flies are added. Key words: Diptera, Pipunculidae, behaviour, ecology Introduction Pipunculid flies are rather small mostly black insects, developing as parasitoids inside leafhoppers, with the ability of hovering (relationship to Syrphidae) and with enormous compound eyes, useful for males in search for females, and for females in search for a potential victim, a cicad larva. Most specimen of Pipunculidae studied so far were collected by Malaise traps. This material allows to describe the existing species, to secure their systematical stand, and to mark their distribution. Many questions in this chapter are still open. On the other hand the development as parasitoids in leafhoppers show fascinating aspects of adaptations to this life and even has an ecological/economical content regarding pest control.

Big-headed flies (Pipunculidae: Diptera) of Šúr natural reserve, their habitat preference and phenology, Entomofauna carpathica, 28(1): 23-36. Abstract: Extensive faunistic research of Šúr natural reserve performed in 2008-2009 resulted in extending the list of Pipunculidae recorded so far from this area to 52 species. Claraeola melanostola (Becker, 1897), Eudorylas angustimembranus Kozánek & Kwon, 1991 and Eudorylas pannonicus (Becker, 1897) were documented for the first time from Slovakia. Level of dominance, habitat preference and phenology were analyzed and discussed. Key words: Faunistics, pipunculids, Slovakia INTRODUCTION Šúr natural reserve (Šúr NR) is large, well-preserved remain of boggy alder forest. It is assumed, that it is the last biotope of this type of alder forest in central Europe. In 1990, Šúr NR was included in the list of international key wetlands according to the RAMSAR convenience and is considered an area of European importance registered in NATURA 2000 (SKUEV0279 Šúr). Šúr NR is situated in close vicinity of Bratislava. Its current area is 654.959 ha, with an altitude of 128- 132 msl. Despite negative anthropogenic factors influencing Šúr NR in last decades, resulting in the reduction of its natural values, it is still a place with unique flora and fauna (FŰRY 2010). Šúr NR has been in the center of interest of botanists and zoologists since the middle of the 19th century, when KORNHUBER (1858) published the first comprehensive list on its flora.

Therefore, it is important to understand their diversity, abundance and distribution for planning effective pest management programmes. We surveyed scarabaeid beetles from 8 landscapes from different zones in Himachal Pradesh (N 32o 29' and E 75o 10'), India. In 2011 and 2012, surveys were conducted during 4 months period (May-August) by using UV light traps. A total of 13,569 scarabaeid adults of 20 genera and 56 species belonging to subfamilies Melolonthinae, Rutelinae, Cetoniinae and Dynastinae were recorded. The five most common species were Brahmina coriacea, Adoretus lasiopygus, Anomala lineatopennis, Maladera insanabilis and Holotrichia longipennis. They comprised 9.88-10.05, 7.18-7.76, 7.13-7.27, 6.80-7.62 and 5.22-5.30% during 2011-12, respectively. Anomala (10 species) was the most dominant genus in the present study, whereas Melolonthinae was the most dominant subfamily accounting 53.23% of total scarabs collected from the study sites. Among different landscapes, Palampur had maximum diversity and abundance, while Shillaroo had least diversity but more abundance of single species B.

  • Vectores De Xylella Fastidiosa

Although the practice of entomophagy is widespread in the region, a detailed account regarding the utilization of edible insects is still lacking. The present study documents the existing knowledge of entomophagy in the region, emphasizing the currently most consumed insects in view of their marketing potential as possible future food items. Assessment was done with the help of semi-structured questionnaires, which mentioned a total of 106 insect species representing 32 families and 9 orders that were considered as health foods by the local ethnic groups. While most of the edible insects are consumed boiled, cooked, fried, roasted/toasted, some insects such as Cossus sp., larvae and pupae of ants, bees, wasps, and hornets as well as honey, bee comb, bee wax are consumed raw. Certain edible insects are either fully domesticated (e.g., Antheraea assamensis, Apis cerana indica, and Samia cynthia ricini) or semi-domesticated in their natural habitat (e.g., Vespa mandarinia, Vespa soror, Vespa tropica tropica, and Vespula orbata), and the potential of commercialization of these insects and some other species as a bio-resource in Nagaland exists.
