The most successful Audi DTM driver of all time will take part in the FIA Formula E World Championship for Audi in 2021, but the 34-year-old father of a family has also already set his next goal in the DTM. With his third title triumph in just four years, René Rast wrote DTM history at the beginning of November. The Minden-born driver, who lives in Bregenz (Austria), won 24 races in record time with the Audi RS 5 DTM, took 20 pole positions, set the fastest lap 14 times and collected 1,113 points. With 77 starts, this corresponds to an average of more than 14 points per race. In the DTM’s eternal list of best drivers, René Rast is now tied with racing legend Klaus Ludwig in second place for championship titles. In this interview, the German explains how he spent the days after winning his third title, which goals he has for Formula E, why he remains loyal to Audi and which DTM record he still wants to break. Donau, June 16, 2021 – The DTM starts its 36th season under new auspices in which Audi is strongly represented on two grids. While the DTM is relying on GT3 sportscars like the Audi R8 LMS for the first time after two decades of Class 1 touring cars, the DTM Trophy is tackling its second season with production-based models like the Audi R8 LMS GT4. “Audi knows the DTM very well and, with twelve title successes in the drivers classification alone, is one of the two most successful brands in history. A new era begins for the DTM in 2021. Gerhard Berger has succeeded in transforming the Class 1 era into a highly attractive platform based on GT motorsport. We’re looking at those teams who deserve a place in the history books, whether it is for greatness, or mediocrity. Today we’re getting right up to date with our fifth team – Spyker F1. The roots of current Formula One team Force India F1 start way back in 1991 with Jordan Grand Prix. They have been through several iterations in recent times, and today we’re going to talk about just one of them. Jordan was bought by Midland F1 who were bought by Spyker. Spyker Cars are a relatively new Dutch automotive company, although the name dates back to the early 1900s. This new, modern version of Spyker was founded in 1999, and they build high performance sports cars. They did have a little motorsport experience, building and running GT cars. The key to their entrance into Formula 1 seems to be with Michiel Mol, a wealthy internet entrepreneur. He had previously sponsored Jos Verstappen, and wanted to further his involvement with the sport. His new deal saw him invest in Spyker Cars, to help them invest in F1, to the tune of over $100 million. He became their Director of F1 Racing. The deal with Midland was completed mid‐way through the 2006 season. Current drivers Christijan Albers and Tiego Monteiro were kept on, whilst the team set about trying to change their name. The regulations frown upon mid‐ season name changes, though, so Spyker stuck to being a title sponsor – Spyker MF1 Racing.

In spite of a broken foot, Mike Rockenfeller perfected an Audi one-two win. René Rast continues to cause a sensation in his first DTM season. In spite of never having been to Russia before and knowing Moscow Raceway near Moscow only from the simulator, the driver from Audi Sport Team Rosberg secured pole position on Saturday and went on to clinch one of the rare lights-to-flag victories in the DTM. With that, the German, after nine of 18 races, is leading the standings by a narrow margin, trailed by Lucas Auer (Mercedes-Benz) and Mattias Ekström (Audi). “It was an awesome race,” said Rast, following his second DTM victory. “The car was mega, the pit stop superb – a big thank you to the team! Being in the top spot of the championship again is a tremendous feeling.” No less impressive was the second place clinched by Mike Rockenfeller who, following his accident at the Norisring in which he was not at fault, raced with a broken left foot, having to use his right one for braking at Moscow Raceway.
