Forgotten F1 Teams – Spyker F1 Welcome to Forgotten F1 Teams – a miniseries brought to you by Sidepodcast. We’re looking at those teams who deserve a place in the history books, whether it is for greatness, or mediocrity. Today we’re getting right up to date with our fifth team – Spyker F1. The roots of current Formula One team Force India F1 start way back in 1991 with Jordan Grand Prix. They have been through several iterations in recent times, and today we’re going to talk about just one of them. Jordan was bought by Midland F1 who were bought by Spyker. Spyker Cars are a relatively new Dutch automotive company, although the name dates back to the early 1900s. This new, modern version of Spyker was founded in 1999, and they build high performance sports cars. They did have a little motorsport experience, building and running GT cars. The key to their entrance into Formula 1 seems to be with Michiel Mol, a wealthy internet entrepreneur. He had previously sponsored Jos Verstappen, and wanted to further his involvement with the sport. His new deal saw him invest in Spyker Cars, to help them invest in F1, to the tune of over $100 million. He became their Director of F1 Racing. The deal with Midland was completed mid‐way through the 2006 season. Current drivers Christijan Albers and Tiego Monteiro were kept on, whilst the team set about trying to change their name. The regulations frown upon mid‐ season name changes, though, so Spyker stuck to being a title sponsor – Spyker MF1 Racing.

I am beyond grateful for being presented such opportunities in motorsport throughout the master degree, the sport that I have been a huge fan of my whole life. I was given deeper and wider knowledge of many different fields in sports that bought up inspirational and interesting topics to think and learn from. I want to express my deep and sincere gratitude to my advisor, Professor Harald Klaus Dolles for giving me the opportunity to do my research on the sport that I love the most and supporting me with his invaluable guidelines throughout my research. I would like to thank him for sharing his knowledge and vision with me as I am honored to have had him as my supervisor. I want to express my appreciation towards my family who pushed me to choose and continue my education in a field of study that is interesting to me. I understand taking this step was important and huge especially that I moved to a country that speak a different language than me. Yet, they supported me and value my growth, nevertheless. A special thank you for my sister and nephew who were always there through video calls giving me the emotional support and the drive that I needed to complete this degree.

  • Understanding the Place-Specific Formation Processes of Sustainable Urban Experiments a Mixed Method Comparative Case Study of Formula E
Master’s thesis - master Innovation Sciences Understanding the place-specific formation processes of sustainable urban experiments A mixed method comparative case study of Formula E July 27, 2021 Author: Marius Roeterdink, BSc Student number: 5673127 Contact: [email protected] Supervisor: Dr. J. Hoekman Second reader: Dr. ir. J.C.L Torrens Master’s Thesis – Master Innovation Sciences GEO4-2239X Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University 0 Place-specific formation processes of sustainable urban experiments Abstract Cities are increasingly recognized as frontrunners in the transition to a more sustainable society due to their assembly of technology, resources, population, culture, and economics. This is, amongst others, visible from a global increase in urban actors collaborating to experiment with new sustainable configurations. These so-called sustainable urban experiments, embedded in a broader niche, are not confined to a specific spatial context but will rather emerge in complex ‘place bundles’, forming a global niche. However, the formation of a global niche is interrelated with local experimentation and is thereby locally rooted. A prime example is sustainable motorsports experiment Formula E. Formula E operates on a global scale with numerous multinational companies involved but is set in urban environments and the local regional context arguably influences the formation of such events. In other words, Formula E is a global sustainable urban experiment which is locally embedded. Considerable variation in the way a sustainable urban experiment is formed locally is likely to exist. The objective of this study was to complement strategic niche management and sustainable transitions literature by understanding the specific place-specific factors under which global sustainable urban experiments are formed.

FORMULA E SUSTAINABILITY REPORT Season One 2014/2015 Formula E Operations Ltd 9th Floor, 3 Shortlands, Hammersmith, London, W6 8DA Formula E Sustainability Report Welcome from our CEO It is my pleasure to welcome you to our first ever Sustainability Report. This report demonstrates how sustainability is integral to our business strategy and the values of Formula E. Throughout the inaugural season we have worked hard to measure and analyse data that covers all areas of Formula E. The results from these studies and assessments have been outlined in the following report and will form a new baseline from which we will measure and report on our future performance. Formula E has many reasons to feel proud of its sustainable credentials at the end of the first season. The sustainability report aims to openly outline the fact that we are acutely aware of our environmental impacts as a company and show that we are going to lengths to ensure the reduction of our footprint where possible. As the first electric motor racing championship in the world, it can be seen that sustainability is deeply rooted in the essence of Formula E. We have a vision to speak out to the new generation of sporting fans and discover solutions for environmental issues through the fusion of technology, sustainability and innovative entertainment. We share a belief that through our collaboration with some of the world’s leading companies, in and out of motor racing, we can revolutionise sustainable mobility and change perceptions towards a better future. The report outlines our goals, mission, vision and values which brought us from the inception of Formula E to the end of the first season.
