Knut Kristian Langva Døscher German Reprisals in Norway During the Second World War Master’s thesis in Historie Supervisor: Jonas Scherner Trondheim, May 2017 Norwegian University of Science and Technology Preface and acknowledgements The process for finding the topic I wanted to write about for my master's thesis was a long one. It began with narrowing down my wide field of interests to the Norwegian resistance movement. This was done through several discussions with professors at the historical institute of NTNU. Via further discussions with Frode Færøy, associate professor at The Norwegian Home Front Museum, I got it narrowed down to reprisals, and the cases and questions this thesis tackles. First, I would like to thank my supervisor, Jonas Scherner, for his guidance throughout the process of writing my thesis. I wish also to thank Frode Færøy, Ivar Kraglund and the other helpful people at the Norwegian Home Front Museum for their help in seeking out previous research and sources, and providing opportunity to discuss my findings. I would like to thank my mother, Gunvor, for her good help in reading through the thesis, helping me spot repetitions, and providing a helpful discussion partner. Thanks go also to my girlfriend, Sigrid, for being supportive during the entire process, and especially towards the end. I would also like to thank her for her help with form and syntax. I would like to thank Joachim Rønneberg, for helping me establish the source of some of the information regarding the aftermath of the heavy water raid. I also thank Berit Nøkleby for her help with making sense of some contradictory claims by various sources.

  • The Influence of German National Socialism and Italian Fascism on the Nasjonal Samling, 1933–1936
fascism 8 (2019) 36-60 brill.com/fasc Norwegian Fascism in a Transnational Perspective: The Influence of German National Socialism and Italian Fascism on the Nasjonal Samling, 1933–1936 Martin Kristoffer Hamre Humboldt University of Berlin and King’s College London [email protected] Abstract Following the transnational turn within fascist studies, this paper examines the role German National Socialism and Italian Fascism played in the transformation of the Norwegian fascist party Nasjonal Samling in the years 1933–1936. It takes the rivalry of the two role models as the initial point and focusses on the reception of Italy and Germany in the party press of the Nasjonal Samling. The main topics of research are therefore the role of corporatism, the involvement in the organization caur and the increasing importance of anti-Semitism. One main argument is that both indirect and direct German influence on the Nasjonal Samling in autumn 1935 led to a radi- calization of the party and the endorsement of anti-Semitic attitudes. However, the Nasjonal Samling under leader Vidkun Quisling never prioritized Italo-German rivalry as such. Instead, it perceived itself as an independent national movement in the com- mon battle of a European-wide phenomenon against its arch-enemies: liberalism and communism. Much of the congregation of John Robinson immigrated to this colony from Leiden in the Netherlands. Myles Standish was a military leader of this colony, which was governed for nearly 30 years by William Bradford. Colonists from the Mayflower established, for ten points, what colony near a namesake rock in Massachusetts? ANSWER: Plymouth Colony (2) Description acceptable. Thomas Aquinas cited Genesis 1:28 [chapter 1, verse 28] as Biblical justification for this general action, so long as it was used as a means to divine happiness. The \spoilage" and \enough and as good" provisions limit the right to this practice, according to John Locke, who stated that this practice became legitimate through the mixing of labor. Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality blames all the world's \crimes, wars, and murders" on this practice, which takes place through enclosure of the commons. For ten points, name this practice that Locke sought to protect alongside life and liberty. THE GERMAN QUESTION “The German question is the most sombre, the most complicated, the most com- prehensive problem of all recent history.” Constantin Frantz (1866) THE GERMAN QUESTION by WILHELM RÖPKE T*rofessor at the lnstitut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales, Geneva TRANSLATED BY E.W. DICKES INTRODUCTION BY PROFESSOR F. A. HAYEK LONDON GEORGE ALLEN & UNWIN LTD First published in Great Britain in 1946 All rights reserved Published in Switzerland in 1945 under the title Die Deutsche Frage (Eugen Rentsch Verlag, Erlenbach-Zürich). Translated from the Second Edition BOOK PRODUCTION | WAR ECONOMY STAM^RD This book is produced in complete uniformity with the authorised economy standards. Printed in Great Britain in 12 point Bembo type The Blackfriars Press Limited Smith-Dorrien Road, Leicester PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION A YEAR has now passed since the overthrow and the complete occupation of Germany. What progress has been made in this critical year in the solution of the German problem? A dispassionate answer with justice to all sides can only be that the progress made has been utterly disappointing. A year ago Germany was a molten mass ready for pouring into the right moulds. The moment for this was missed; the metal has cooled and toughened. A year ago, when this book was written, it was possible to indicate the paths to a real solution of the German problem and to have confidence in their practicability. Today it must be confessed that at critical points the exact opposite has been done of what should have been done, and that an opportunity has been let slip which all eternity cannot bring back.

NRK Dagsrevyen v/Eirik Veum Pb 8500, Majorstua 0340 OSLO Tlf: 9623 7277 Innledning Oslo, fredag 9. februar 1945. Bakerst i kjøretøyet sitter ni unge menn. Like før klokken 05.30 kjører politibussen inn på festningsområdet.

  • Political Religion’
Ideological Incorrectness beyond ‘Political Religion’ Discourse on Nazi Ideology among Scandinavian National Socialist Intellectuals 1933-1945 Rebecca Wennberg Royal Holloway University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy History Royal Holloway University of London September 2015 1 Declaration of Authorship I, Rebecca Wennberg, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract The concept ‘political religion’ has become the epitome of the ‘ideological turn’ in Holocaust research: the idea of the Nazi regime’s aim to replace Christianity and let its ideology function as a ‘political religion’. But the heretical nature of National Socialism that has increasingly found its way into contemporary research remains untheorised in this context. This study seeks to address this gap by introducing the concept of ‘ideological incorrectness’ – a first step towards a re-theorisation of ‘political religion’ that acknowledges the ideological divergence and the transgressive mindset so characteristic of the Nazis. With ideological divergence in mind, this thesis approaches Nazi ideology not from its ‘generic’ centre in Nazi Germany, but from its political peripheries. Combining analyses from archival material with text based research it examines a selected group of Danish and Norwegian National Socialists who went from being leaders of small, sectarian and pan-Germanic movements in their respective home countries throughout the 1930s, to becoming high-ranked SS men following the Nazi occupation of Denmark and Norway on 9 April 1940. The study reveals that contrary to the notion that National Socialism functioned as a substitute religion for Christianity, their hostility towards Christian confessionalism made them reject the idea of a ‘political religion’.
