Aligned to CCSS Teacher’s Guide Thank you so much for purchasing! Background: Citing text evidence is a difficult task for many students. Children are inclined by nature to use their background knowledge. This packet will help students to maintain integrity to “Cite the Evidence”. You will find the structural response system known as RACE on pages where it applies. This communicates the manner in which to answer questions. Parents and students understand expectations. Utilizations: This packet can be used during small group time for guided reading and/or close reading. As the teacher, you can have students highlight, code the text, attend to structural analysis, and conduct vocabulary mini-lessons. Students can then revisit the piece for homework. For each passage, you will find two pages of text dependent questions aligned to Common Core standards. This makes it appropriate to use for assessment purposes. Passage borders are corrugated. This makes it easy for you to match up for your files or when creating homework packets. I have the passages duplicated without border. Scroll to the end of the unit or click here. The purpose of the passages without border is so you have room to code text and annotate in the margins. These passages were specifically designed for Close Reading. Examine word choice! HERA – READING GROUP GUIDE About the Book: Hera: the Goddess and Her Glory is the third book in Olympians, a new graphic novel series from First Second that retells the Greek myths. It recounts the story of Hera, from her marriage to Zeus and ascendance as the Queen of the Gods, to her patronage of many of the heroes of Ancient Greek. For Discussion: Hera is the goddess of marriage, yet her own marriage to Zeus is full of fights. Who do you think is to blame for that, Zeus or Hera? (Watch out for lightning bolts and giant snakes when answering this question.) When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman in the 1930’s, they consciously modeled him on Heracles. What are some aspects that Superman and Heracles have in common? Heracles and Jason are two of the greatest heroes of Ancient Greece, and are both closely connected to Hera. But their respective relationships with her are quite different. Why do you think that is? Many of the names in this book will be very familiar to modern readers, like Atlas and Heracles. What are some modern things that have names taken from Green mythology? Do you think it’s fair that Hera punishes the children and girlfriends of Zeus? Is it fair that Zeus keeps cheating on Hera? The number twelve comes up often in the Greek myths. Heracles performs twelve labors; there are twelve Olympians, and twelve Titans before them. Why is the number twelve so important? What other numbers come up a lot in the Greek myths? Heracles is given a choice between a hard life, in which he would have to work for everything but would be remembered forever, and an easy life, in which where everything would be given to him. -

Royal Blue is the color of the blue bird and black would be the secondary color matching our other High School (J C). Blue bird Powder blue and white Missouri state bird Blue bird Robins egg blue & white The blue bird is our state bird- links the high schools as well. Blue Bird Royal Blue and White The state bird is the blue bird and it fits with the other high school being a bird also. Blue bird navy blue and black To keep it in line with the current high school Blue bird Royal blue and white Because jays have a red bird and the other school can have a blue bird blue bird royal blue , red , and black for JC , we already have a jay bird so either we have the jay bird for both high schools or we have different birds .. and we combine the colors of TJ & LC into the new highs how Blue bird Dark blue and dark silver The mascot compares with the JC mascot. The colors because the blue would be a good color for a high school and silver because it goes with blue Blue Bird Blue bird blue and gold Blue bird is MO state’s bird. We have the Jays already. Blues and Jays of JC sound good. It’s catchy, “Go JC Blues!” Blue Bird Royal blue and golden yellow Because Jc high school is jay birds and their color is red and black. -
