  • Tsotoronto Symphony Orchestra
Toronto 11.12 Symphony ANNUAL Orchestra REPORT tso Peter Oundjian, Music Director 11.12 90 th Season Big Number. Bold Season. From our Music Director Ninety is an interesting age for an orchestra. In the context of a lifetime, the TSO has had a relationship with several generations of Torontonians and guest artists. Within the context of the composers who inspire us and their repertoire which has truly stood the test of time, 90 is quite young. At 90, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra presented a landmark season of bold musical experiences which continue to connect, transcend, and enrich our community. We are a vibrant orchestra, fresh at 90, and powered by the traditions of greatness from which we draw our repertoire. Our commitment to creating art and refreshing our art form was reflected in the celebration of new music and composers throughout the 2011.2012 programme, in our New Creations Festival, and in welcoming 28 débuting artists during the 90th season. We are passionate about enriching our community through art and the power of music, as evidenced so clearly by the major 90th season Residencies featuring three of the greatest artists performing today. I am indebted to, and inspired by, the talented musicians of the TSO, who every day share their passion and commitment towards exceptional orchestral performances. I thank you, the audience, for your enthusiasm in these live concert experiences. Sincerely, Peter Oundjian MUSIC DIRECTOR 3 Chair’s Message The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s 90th season was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the organization and to present an extraordinary season of stellar guest artists, remarkable artistic programming, and special celebrations, including our major fundraising event, Celebrate 90 , which was a landmark for the organization.

A knowledge of the conditions of his task should make the historian of Jesus take a modest view of its importance ; for, though the tree sprung from Alcock"s acorn has now grown to some size and not a little vigour, for the best part of its existence it was overshadowed by taller neighbours in the academic grove. In fact, except in some short periods of unwonted prosperity, Jesus was, until recent ' 1 times, emphatically a small college, low in revenues, and in numbers competing with Peterhouse and Magda- lene rather than with Caius or Christ's.

  • The Chancellors of the Diocese of Rochester
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 24 1900 ( 160 ) THE CHANCELLORS OF THE DIOCESE OE ROCHESTER. BY A. A. ARNOLD, P.S.A. THROUGH the kindness of a friend, a member of our Society, I was lately placed in the possession of a MS. bearing the title, " A List of Chancellors of the Diocese of Rochester," said to be written by Dr. A. C. Ducarel; but on examining the handwriting I am strongly of opinion that the list and notes were compiled and written by Dr. John Denne (Archdeacon of Rochester 1728—1767), and were only corrected and annotated by Dr. Ducarel. The fact that such numerous references are made in the MS. to entries in the Registers at Rochester, to which the Archdeacon would have had ready access, confirms this view, and it is supported by other internal evidence, and espe- cially by a note which occurs with regard to Dr. Win. Llewyn (Chancellor 1580—1598), in which the an- notator, whom I take to be without doubt Dr. Ducarel, directly refers to the Archdeacon as the writer of the memoir. In preparing the MS. for the press I have abso- lutely adhered to the original spelling of the names of persons and parishes, and I have only added a few notes, and some slight account of the Chancellors who have held office since Archdeacon Denne's time, so as to bring the list down to the present day. As to the first three names (which were added to the list in CHANCELLORS OP DIOCESE OF ROCHESTER. 161 a note by Dr.

  • Political Language in the Late Medieval English Parliament
Version pré-éditoriale – Ne pas citer Jean-Philippe GENET, LAMOP (CNRS-Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) Political Language in the Late Medieval English Parliament Is there a date of birth for “political language” or “the language of politics”? To this question many answers have been proposed: Maurizio Viroli would suggest starting with Machiavelli in humanist Florence, Jacques Guilhaumou in the Paris of the French Revolution, whereas others might cite fifth-century Athens or the medieval Italian city-states. Nevertheless, we must remember that, from a purely linguistic point of view, there is no such thing as “political language”. Rather there are political uses of language, and even with this reservation in mind, we must not forget that the use of the word “political” is, or ought to be, reserved to societies in which the structures of power can be said to be political. In other words, “political” is better used when dealing with a more-or-less autonomous “city” or with a kingdom in which government does not entirely depend upon personal or feudal relations. In such cases the structures of power are determined by a relationship between a ruling institution (the monarchy, or the magistrates in a city) and a social community, either organized in subgroups with their own set of institutions or, if amorphous, able to actively or passively express their own choices. To put it simply – and with full awareness of the objections it will raise – there can be no political language as such before the twelfth century in Western Europe. There is another requisite for the existence of political language: the communication structure must be that of a public sphere, and texts, images, music and so forth must be able to circulate freely and broadly both within a given society (implying the existence, besides the Latin of the clerics, of vernacular languages which can be written and understood) and between different “national” or “regional” societies.
