  • Chapter II Feudalism: a Conceptual Analysis
Chapter II Feudalism: A Conceptual Analysis Chapter II Feudalism: A Conceptual Analysis (A). Feudalism: A Debate: umans experienced inextricable hardships during their onward march to civilization. They traversed different historical periods to touch the H civilizational heights, and each period had specific denominations to explain production relations.1 While the ancient period characterized predominance of city states and slavery, the medieval period, institutionally speaking, was known for feudal organization of state and society.2 According to Karl Marx, human history passed through five successive formations/modes: primitive (primitive Communism), slavery, in which land belonged to rich and labour was extracted from slaves, feudal in which land belonged to feudal lords and labour was done by the serfs, capitalism in which bourgeoisie controlled the industries and labour was provided by the proletariat, and Socialism/Communism where means and forces of production would be controlled commonly by the working class. All these stages characterized progressive epochs of economic formations of society.3 Feudalism formed a dominant institution of medieval society. The scholars attach different meanings to it. During the 17th century, it described all unfair and outdated laws or customs associated with the administration of the fiefs and traditional rights enjoyed by the warrior aristocracy. The word gained currency with Montesquieu‟s definition about it in his classical work De L’Esprit des Lois (The Spirit of Laws) in 1748. Since then, it remained the subject matter of debate among 1 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Collected Works, Vol. 13, New York: International Publishers, 1961, p.9. 2 Paul Vinogradoff, “Feudalism,” Cambridge Medieval History, London, Vol.

  • Book Reviews
BOOK REVIEWS EDITED BY MICHAEL P. WEBER The Good Provider: H. J. Heinz and His 57 Varieties. By Robert C. Alberts. (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1973. Pp. 297. $10.00.) Who has not at some time sampled one of Heinz's 57 Varieties? Everyone who likes to eat will be interested in this biography of H. J. Heinz by Robert Alberts, who gave such an entertaining talk on William Bingham at the an- nual meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical Association a few years ago. This particular volume is the outgrowth of an article in American Heritage magazine and still shows signs of being intended for a popular rather than a scholarly audience. It is a sympathetic account of a simple, honest, hardworking, deeply religious son of German immigrants who embodied the Horatio Alger tradition without being an especially complex or interesting person. Nevertheless, it reminds us how many of today's famous firms were originally such personal enterprises. It is a little surprising, however, that Mr. Alberts places Heinz on the same level as other Pittsburgh magnates like Carnegie, Frick, Mellon, and Westinghouse, with whom he seems to have had relatively little communication. Yet certainly the story of the Heinz company is a significant aspect of nineteenth-century social history, reflecting as it does changes in the American diet made possible by new developments in transportation, re- frigeration, and the preservation of food in cans. The book shows that the company's success was based on a combination of large-scale production and skillful techniques in public relations and advertising.

The College and Canons of St Stephen’s, Westminster, 1348 - 1548 Volume I of II Elizabeth Biggs PhD University of York History October 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the college founded by Edward III in his principal palace of Westminster in 1348 and dissolved by Edward VI in 1548 in order to examine issues of royal patronage, the relationships of the Church to the Crown, and institutional networks across the later Middle Ages. As no internal archive survives from St Stephen’s College, this thesis depends on comparison with and reconstruction from royal records and the archives of other institutions, including those of its sister college, St George’s, Windsor. In so doing, it has two main aims: to place St Stephen’s College back into its place at the heart of Westminster’s political, religious and administrative life; and to develop a method for institutional history that is concerned more with connections than solely with the internal workings of a single institution. As there has been no full scholarly study of St Stephen’s College, this thesis provides a complete institutional history of the college from foundation to dissolution before turning to thematic consideration of its place in royal administration, music and worship, and the manor of Westminster. The circumstances and processes surrounding its foundation are compared with other such colleges to understand the multiple agencies that formed St Stephen’s, including that of the canons themselves. Kings and their relatives used St Stephen’s for their private worship and as a site of visible royal piety.
