VIEWS AND REVIEWS Retrieving the Past? A Consideration of Texts Judith Snodgrass he consequences of Shaku SOen’s participation in the World’s Parlia ment of Religions in Chicago, 1893, are well known. His paper “ The Law ofT Cause and Effect as Taught by the Buddha” attracted the attention of Paul Cams and the subsequent friendship between Shaku SOen and Cams led di rectly to D. T. Suzuki’s presence in America and the introduction of Japanese MahSySna Buddhism to the West. Less well known is that Shaku SOen present ed a second paper, “ Arbitration Instead of W ar,” which has received little at tention beyond Robert Aitken’s attempts to reconcile its pacifist message with its author’s later involvement in Japan’s war against Russia.1 Aitken Rdshi’s paper, like most other studies of the Parliament, is based on the official record published by the Parliament’s chairman, the Reverend John Henry Barrows.2 The Parliament generated a profusion of literature,3 but Barrows’s account alone was to be considered authoritative. Each paper carried his copyright. The book, extensively edited and embellished with photographs—not artists’ impressions but captured instances of “ reality” —was to be the tme record of the event. It was the organizers* stated plan that it would become a source of reference and debate.4 It was to be a record for the next century to judge and 1 Robert Aitken, “Three Lessons from Shaku SOen,” in Fred Epstein and Dennis Maloney, eds., The Path o f Compassion: Contemporary Writings on Engaged Bud dhism , Buddhist Peace Press, Berkeley, 1985, pp.

  • From a Grain of Mustard Seed by Cynthia Davis
FROM A GRAIN OF MUSTARD SEED BY CYNTHIA DAVIS ISBN 978-0-557-02763-7 THE MUSTARD SEED IS PLANTED 1872-1882 The seed that became St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral was found in the hearts of the small group of faithful Episcopalians who settled in Albuquerque. As a minority of the population, the Anglos found comfort in the familiarity of reading the 1789 Book of Common Prayer, the King James Bible, and the Calvary Cathechism. Very likely they followed the mandate in the Prayer Book stating, “The Psalter shall be read through once every month, as it is there appointed, both for Morning and for Evening Prayer.”i Under the strong spiritual direction of the Rev. Henry Forrester, both St. John’s and missions around the District would be planted, land purchased, and churches built. Other seeds were being planted in Albuquerque. Various denominations built churches in the midst of the homes where the new arrivals lived. Members could easily walk to the church of their choice. Many corner lots were taken up with small places of worship. Some Anglos attended the Methodist church built of adobe in 1880 at Third and Lead. Dr. Sheldon Jackson, established First Presbyterian Church in 1880. A one-room church was built at Fifth and Silver two years later under Rev. James Menaul. It was enlarged in 1905, and after a fire in 1938, the building was rebuilt and improved. (In 1954 it moved to 215 Locust.)ii St. Paul’s Lutheran Church was not built until 1891 at Sixth and Silver. The Rev.

  • Welsh Disestablishment: 'A Blessing in Disguise'
Welsh disestablishment: ‘A blessing in disguise’. David W. Jones The history of the protracted campaign to achieve Welsh disestablishment was to be characterised by a litany of broken pledges and frustrated attempts. It was also an exemplar of the ‘democratic deficit’ which has haunted Welsh politics. As Sir Henry Lewis1 declared in 1914: ‘The demand for disestablishment is a symptom of the times. It is the democracy that asks for it, not the Nonconformists. The demand is national, not denominational’.2 The Welsh Church Act in 1914 represented the outcome of the final, desperate scramble to cross the legislative line, oozing political compromise and equivocation in its wake. Even then, it would not have taken place without the fortuitous occurrence of constitutional change created by the Parliament Act 1911. This removed the obstacle of veto by the House of Lords, but still allowed for statutory delay. Lord Rosebery, the prime minister, had warned a Liberal meeting in Cardiff in 1895 that the Welsh demand for disestablishment faced a harsh democratic reality, in that: ‘it is hard for the representatives of the other 37 millions of population which are comprised in the United Kingdom to give first and the foremost place to a measure which affects only a million and a half’.3 But in case his audience were insufficiently disheartened by his homily, he added that there was: ‘another and more permanent barrier which opposes itself to your wishes in respect to Welsh Disestablishment’, being the intransigence of the House of Lords.4 The legislative delay which the Lords could invoke meant that the Welsh Church Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 April 1912, but it was not to be enacted until 18 September 1914.

HAYES, In the Office of tlie Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C. PREFACE, present volume has grown THE out of the request of a relative, four years ago, to fill up some blanks in a Family Bible. How the response to that request grew from a letter into a pamphlet, and from a pamphlet into a volume ; by what unthought-of study, correspondence, and visits to the old homes of the family, a labour of love has reached its present stopping-place, I need not detail to any who have had anything to do with genealogical research. Some special acknowledgment, besides that given on each page, is due for co-operation in this work, without which I could have done comparatively noth- ing. Mr. Charles B. Moore, of New York, has kindly added to his " Southold Index of 1698," (in itself a mine of genealogical material,) many letters and his- torical notes, and a transcript of all his MS.
