In 1784, a ship called "United States" arrived in Pondicherry. Its captain was Elias Hasket Derby of Salem. In the decades that followed Indian goods became available in Salem, Boston and Providence. A handful of Indian servant boys, perhaps the first Asian Indian residents, could be found in these towns, brought home by the sea captains.[1] 1801 First writings on Hinduism In 1801, New England writer Hannah Adams published A View of Religions, with a chapter discussing Hinduism. Joseph Priestly, founder of English Utilitarianism and isolater of oxygen, emigrated to America and published A Comparison of the Institutions of Moses with those of the Hindoos and other Ancient Nations in 1804. 1810-20 Unitarian interest in Hindu reform movements The American Unitarians became interested in Indian thought through the work of Hindu reformer Rammohun Roy (1772-1833) in India. Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj which tried to reform Hinduism by affirming monotheism and rejecting idolotry. The Brahmo Samaj with its universalist ideas became closely allied to the Unitarians in England and America. 1820-40 Emerson's discovery of India Ralph Waldo Emerson discovered Indian thought as an undergraduate at Harvard, in part through the Unitarian connection with Rammohun Roy. He wrote his poem "Indian Superstition" for the Harvard College Exhibition of April 24, 1821. In the 1830's, Emerson had copies of the Rig-Veda, the Upanishads, the Laws of Manu, the Bhagavata Purana, and his favorite Indian text the Bhagavad-Gita.

    'A Wall of Separation' (June 1998) - Library of Congress Information Bulletin 1/10/11 8:03 AM The Library of Congress > Information Bulletin > June 1998 'A Wall of Separation' FBI Helps Restore Jefferson's Obliterated Draft By JAMES HUTSON Following is an article by the curator of a major exhibition at the Library that opens this month and runs through Aug. 22. A key document on view in "Religion and the Founding of the American Republic" (see LC Information Bulletin, May 1998), is the letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, which contains the phrase "a wall of separation between church and state." With the help of the FBI, the draft of the letter, including Jefferson's obliterated words, are now known. Thomas Jefferson's reply on Jan. 1, 1802, to an address from the Danbury (Conn.) Baptist Association, congratulating him upon his election as president, contains a phrase that is as familiar in today's political and judicial circles as the lyrics of a hit tune: "a wall of separation between church and state." This phrase has become well known because it is considered to explain (many would say, distort) the "religion clause" of the First Amendment to the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ...," a clause whose meaning has been the subject of passionate dispute for the past 50 years. During his lifetime, Jefferson could not have predicted that the language in his Danbury Baptist letter would have endured as long as some of his other arresting phrases. The letter was published in a Massachusetts newspaper a month after Jefferson wrote it and then was more or less forgotten for half a century.

    DIVERSE ORIGINALISM Christina Mulligan* ABSTRACT Originalism has a difficult relationship with race and gender. People of color and white women were largely absent from the process of drafting and ratifying the Constitution. Today, self-described originalists are overwhelmingly white men. In light of these realities, can originalism solve its “race and gender” problems while continuing to be originalist? This Article argues that originalists can take several actions today to address originalism’s race and gender problems, including debiasing present-day interpretation, looking to historical sources authored by people of color and white women, and severing originalism and the Constitution’s text from their historical associations with racism and sexism. Taking these steps will not only make originalism more inclusive, but also help originalists become better at accessing the original meaning of the Constitution.   • Secularity and the Antebellum American Novel
    FRAGILE BELIEF: SECULARITY AND THE ANTEBELLUM AMERICAN NOVEL by Grant Shreve A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland December, 2016 ABSTRACT Fragile Belief re-evaluates the relationship between secularity, ethnocultural pluralism, and the novel in the US through an excavation of the experience and representation of religious difference during the first half of the nineteenth century. Secularization narratives have predominated historical accounts of the novel, but in the “spiritual hothouse” of the antebellum US neither secularization nor the history of the novel have proceeded along such straight historical lines. My study joins the ongoing interdisciplinary conversation about secularism by distinguishing what I call “American secularity” as a condition engendered by the surfeit of belief in the US rather than by the naturalization of unbelief. Whereas the secularization of Europe was, according to Charles Taylor, driven by the reformation of the Catholic Church and the rise of humanism, “American secularity,” I contend, emerged within the pressurized environment of global religious contact in the US, a result of sectarian proliferation, indigenous spiritual resistance, European immigration, and the importation of Islam and West African religious traditions via the slave trade. The novel, I argue, arose in the wake of disestablishment in the US as a singular genre for mediating global religious difference as well as for interrogating secularism’s imperative to define “religion.” The authors I treat in each of the chapters track the genre’s development alongside the expansion of public Protestantism in the US. Chapter 1 examines the dynamics of religious contact and exchange between Protestantism and Native American religion in Lydia Maria Child’s first novel Hobomok (1824).

    ‘For Myself, For My Children, For Money’: Selective Biographies Of Early American Women Writers Jean Petrovic Eccles Centre for American Studies 2010 Hannah Adams, 1755-1831 Although almost unheard of today, during the first quarter of the nineteenth century Hannah Adams was one of the most notable writers in the United States and one of its few internationally recognised authors. Along with writers such as Judith Sargent Murray, Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton and Mercy Otis Warren, Adams helped to create a culture in which women could more freely place their name on their publications. Unlike them, however, Adams rejected the more traditional forms of female writing – poetry, novels and plays – and chose instead local and religious history and theology. Hannah Adams was born in Medford, Massachusetts. Her mother died when she was young, and although ill health prevented Adams herself from regularly attending school she profited greatly from her father’s love of books and at a young age could recite the works of Milton and Pope. In her Memoir she would later write: ‘I remember that my first idea of the happiness of Heaven was, of a place where we should find our thirst for knowledge fully gratified.’ When her father’s business failed in the late 1760s the family began taking in lodgers ‘on rustication’ (temporary expulsion) from Harvard. Adams was tutored by some of these young men, one of whom introduced her to Thomas Broughton’s An Historical Dictionary of All Religions from the Creation of the World to this Perfect Time. It is “the USA’s most cherished symbol of liberty and Jefferson’s most enduring monument.”— National Archives. The Congress authorized the Declaration to be printed as a broadside and proclaimed that it should be read to the people throughout the former colonies. In July, 1776, it was printed in 29 newspapers in this country alone. Thereafter, the Fourth of July was celebrated throughout the land by reading the Declaration aloud to assembled crowds.
