Alice & Phoebe Cary Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction Alice (1820-1871) and Phoebe Cary (1824-1871) were 19th century American poets born and raised outside Cincinnati, Ohio, on their family’s Clovernook Farm. Although they lacked formal education, their mother encouraged their interest in literature and writing, and in 1838, Alice published her first poem in a local newspaper. Alice and Phoebe continued to publish locally until 1847 when Alice began to write for the National Era. The Cary sisters gained national attention and were admired by several well-known writers, including Edgar Allan Poe. Their 1850 publication Poems of Alice and Phoebe Cary allowed them to move to New York City. Here they made their living writing poetry and prose for periodicals and independent publications, and were at the center of the literary and social scene. The tenets of their Universalist upbringing and passion for social justice, especially for women’s rights, were often reflected in their writing. The sisters died months apart in 1871 and are buried in Brooklyn, New York. Important Dates . April 26, 1820: Alice Cary is born near Mt. Healthy, Ohio, to Robert and Elizabeth Jessup Cary. September 4, 1824: Phoebe Cary is born near Mt. Healthy, Ohio. 1838: Alice’s poem “The Child of Sorrow” is published in The Sentinel, Cincinnati’s Universalist newspaper. 1847: Alice begins to write for the National Era, Washington, D.C.’s abolitionist newspaper. 1849: Alice and Phoebe contribute to Rufus Griswold’s The Female Poets of America anthology. 1850: Poems of Alice and Phoebe Cary is published, and the sisters move to New York City. -

The article examines Fuller’s work and life in the context of 19th century American culture and social determinants influencing women’s lives. From a very early age, Fuller perceived her role in society different from the role designed for her as a bio- logical girl by the cultural model of the times she lived in. The article focuses on Fuller’s achievements in the context of the self-made man/woman concept. Key words: Margaret Fuller, self-made man, self-made woman, Benjamin Franklin, Tran- scendentalism, 19th century America, concept of success Do not follow where the path may lead. CHAPTER ONE BEFORE 1880, THROUGH EXCUSES ONLY She is in the swim, but not of it. —Journalist magazine In 1890, only 4 percent of American journalists were women, and percentages in other writing fields were even lower.Those few who made a serious com- mitment to writing found their course severely constrained—by their educa- tion, family responsibilities, social codes, and isolation from other writers. Because of these limited freedoms and connections, American women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wrote by relying on some form of justifi- cation or rationalization, which varied with the decades, and they usually wrote professionally for only part of their adulthood. Cast in the insubstantial role of Non-Writer, a subset of the care-giving Woman, these writers were meant to address only women readers on narrowly defined women’s topics such as home- making while the genres and pronouncements of male Writers were shaping American intellectual culture. Although their choices were few, for women working within a patriarchal system without supportive networks or groups, these excuses and restrictive definitions did provide some space for writing. DURING THE COLONIAL PERIOD In the colonial period, women’s labor was frequently needed, in towns and certainly on the frontier, and it provided their means of securing a living when 1 2 A GROUP OF THEIR OWN left without father or husband. Some better educated single women and wid- ows worked in journalism—writing, editing, printing, and distributing news- papers while also taking on contract printing jobs. Elizabeth Glover of Cam- bridge, whose husband, the Reverend Jose Glover, died on the boat to America, operated the first printing press in North America (Marzolf 2). -

For elite southern women, more so than their northern sisters, this identity became integral to southern patriarchy and tradition. As the United States succumbed to sectional tension and eventually civil war, elite white southerners found their way of life threatened as the delicate web of gender, race, and class relations that the Old South was based upon began to crumble. -

Mercy Otis Warren Did you know that Mercy Otis Warren wrote a book that was 1,317 pages long? I am going to tell you all about Mercy Otis Warren’s life. Why is she so important? Don't worry, I am going to tell you in this biography. I will first tell you about when she was born, where she was born, and about her childhood. Mercy Otis Warren was born on September 28,1728 in Barnstable Massachusetts. She died on October 19,1814 in Plymouth, she was 86 years old, and known as the First Lady of revolution. Mercy's favorite subject was American independence. Mercy expressed her feelings by reading, writing, and discussing about politics. Mercy had a very harsh childhood, Mercy was also a farmer with her kin. Mercy had 13 brothers and sisters, but only 6 of them survived to adult life. Now I will tell you about Mercy Otis Warren's adult life. Growing up, she wrote plays, books, and poems, and also had five kids. Another accomplishment that Mercy had in her adult life, is she brought food and raised money to help the war camps. Furthermore, she raised money for them, and made clothes for the soldiers who were in the Revolutionary war. Mercy wrote a play called “ The Blockheads” that was about how women were just as good as men were. In 1790, she published a copy of her poems and plays. Mercy was one of the most educated women in her country. I will now tell you about Mercy's contributions to the Revolutionary war.
