[Americana] Roebling, Johann August; Underwood, Edward; Schuyler, Hamilton Diary of My Journey from Muehlhausen in Thuringia via Bremen to the United States of North America in the Year 1831 The Roebling Press, Trenton, 1931. 124 pp. 8vo. 1931 privately printed edition, from the 1832 original printed in the Roebling Printing-House, Eschwege. This edition translated, with occasional notes, by Edward Underwood, with a foreword by Hamilton Schuyler. Roebling was a civil engineer who gained fame as the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge. He and his brother, on land they $125 purchased after emigrating from Prussia, established the town of Saxonburg as a community for German settlers. This book is his diary during that voyage, which includes very specific and detailed information about the American political and social situation, Roebling’s plans upon arriving in the United States, conditions on the ship and of its passengers, and the voyage itself. Near fine.

Eric Sloane had an appreciation and understanding that America’s landscape was changing rapidly, and $30 preserved that wonderful history through his illustrations and wonderful writings. Very good. [Business] The Seth Seiders Constructive Talks to Pivot Men Seth Seiders Incorporated, 1927. Two post-bound hardcover volumes from Seth Seiders’ series of business courses. Each includes numerous short lectures on various topics aimed at executives, produced by several companies purchased by Seiders during the 1920s. Seiders was a somewhat shady character with $125 ties to Al Capone and a history of tax evasion. (University of Chicago Library). Near fine. Containing a Brief Account of the Different Schemes of Religion Printed for John West, 1791. Second edition. 410, [17] pp. 8vo. An alphabetical catalog of religious denominations describing their origins and the salient points of their belief systems. Includes sections on notable $125 denominations such as Quakers, Shakers, Baptists, and Dunkers, as well as more obscure ones such as Apollinarians and Schewenkfeldians. Following this is an account of religious groups specific to various nations, and by state within the United States. This is the second edition, published seven years after the 1784 original, and including among its subscribers Vice President John Adams, Governor , attorney John Q. [Quincy] Adams, Rev. Jeremiah Belknap, , etc., etc. The author, , was a distant relative of the political family, and according to the Dictionary of American Biography most likely also the first woman in America to earn a living as a writer. This work was undertaken primarily to alleviate her financial situation at the time, and this second edition marks the beginning of her success in the profession. Fair. Binder’s copy. This edition includes an introduction by Anatole France. A dystopian novel in which America is under the power of a fascist dictatorship (the Iron Heel). Socialism and capitalism clash throughout, and much of London’s speculation bears a startling $50 resemblance to the first half of the twentieth century. James McPherson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom, denounces 12 him as nearly traitorous for numerous examples of hesitation at critical stages of conflict (though other historians disagree). Philip Henry Sheridan was a Union general during the American Civil War who, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, won several significant victories against Confederate forces. He also fought in the Great Plains Indian Wars, and though they continued until after his death, his efforts during this conflict helped protect Yellowstone National Park, and he was promoted to General of the Army in the year of his death (1888). Good. Hinges weakening, front free endpaper of vol. 1 loose, boards lightly rubbed, front & end matter toned.
