Bromell “Angels who Stepped Outside their Houses” examines the fashioning of a gendered white American middle-class Protestant subject called the “American true woman” as a fitting representation of the emerging new American nation, as reflected in the writings of white American women authors from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Locating the formation of this identity on a transnational plane, this work argues that in their myriad texts, these women authors reveal the significant role that imperial Britain and the non-national/not-yet-national colonial Orient played in the (de/)construction/(de/)centering of American true womanhood. Although I do not want to downplay the fact that the representation of their power on a global plane was greatly disproportionate till the late nineteenth century when, for instance, the U.S. became an imperial power to be reckoned with, my study mainly concentrates on how all three of these materially produced metaphorical constructs were participants in a transnational exchange, albeit one characterized by different degrees of authority.2 In this large sociopolitical backdrop I will locate my study of the “American true woman,” considered as a fitting representation of the emerging American republic, and show her as an ambivalent (trans)national subjectivity, since other national or non-national/not-yet- national spaces were always already implicated in the making of this specifically gendered (female), racial (white), classed (middle class) and religious (Protestant) identity deemed uniquely American. National Selves and Transnational Visions ‘In the first place, do not copy foreign distinctions.’ ‘How? I do not know what you mean by ‘foreign distinctions.’’ ‘I mean the claiming certain airy rights and imaginary vantage ground, which however suited to the spirit of other lands, are out of place here. We have no privileged class; we have no American aristocracy! Heaven forbid we ever should, other than that truly Republican one, the aristocracy of mind and manners.’ 1 Susan Warner (1851) This is how Susan Warner’s essay, “How May an American Woman Best Show her Patriotism?”3 accounts for America’s national uniqueness, as perceived in the eyes of her nineteenth-century white American characters. Here, a husband explains to his wife that to be patriotic is to refrain from emulating the “foreign” (meaning, at least in this instance, the British,) assertively positing a distinctive difference between the new republic and the aristocratic Old World. The exchange is exemplary of the American ethos chiefly from around the end of the eighteenth century/the post-Revolutionary years toward the mid-nineteenth-century. This period of nation building and national aggrandizement was characterized and governed by concepts such as the westward movement of civilization, Manifest Destiny, Social Darwinism, and scientific theories of racism that generated a mainstream discourse of American Exceptionalism, producing an image of a distinctive New World country.4 Still, the manner in which George above places the “foreign”/Britain and the U.S in a binary ignores America’s sprouting desire at the time to be recognized as a nation among nations in the European world. His positioning of the old motherland and the newly independent colony as stark contrasts does not acknowledge the ties that existed between them well into the nineteenth century. The “American true woman” however, stands in the intersection of these national and transnational pulls and shows us how other nations contributed to the (de/)construction of this gendered subject. My objective in this dissertation is therefore, to mainly concentrate on the implications of transnational spaces in the (de/)construction/(de/)centering (contributing to both the formation and the dissolution) of a national subject, with special reference to 2 American relations with Britain and the Orient, from around the end of the eighteenth century toward the 1860’s.5 My principal argument here is that writings by white American women in the day participating in American true womanhood (by representing, promoting, and/or emulating this ideal) reveal an unambiguous Anglophilia that envisages a common Anglo-American unity, that is both complemented

    Karunakaran / Lost in Translation “Lost in Translation”: A Study of the History of Sri Lankan Literature Shamila Karunakaran Abstract This paper provides an overview of the history of Sri Lankan literature from the ancient texts of the precolonial era to the English translations of postcolonial literature in the modern era. Sri Lanka’s book history is a cultural record of texts that contains “cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (Chodorow, 2006); however, Tamil language works are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to Sri Lankan culture and are “lost in translation” when conveyed in English. This is a common problem when translating non-Western texts for North American and British readership, especially those written in non-Roman scripts. Literature and texts are tangible symbols, containing signifed cultural meaning, and they represent varying aspects of an existing international ethnic, social, or linguistic culture or group. Chodorow (2006) likens it to a cultural record of sorts, which he defnes as an object that “contains cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (pg. 373). In particular, those written in South Asian indigenous languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Urdu, Sinhalese are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to specifc culture[s] and cannot be properly conveyed in English translations.

    National Humanities Center My Neighbor, My Enemy: How American Colonists Became Patriots and Loyalists "THE WONDERFUL APPEARANCE of an Angel, Devil & Ghost, to a GENTLEMAN in the Town of Boston, In the Nights of the 14th, 15th, and 16th of October, 1774" (Boston, 1774) A little known political document, "The Wonderful Appearance" is sort of a colonial American version of A Christmas Carol in which three apparitions try to convert a sinner. It was published in Boston in the summer of 1774, the moment of greatest popular rage against royal officials in Massachusetts. It asked the ordinary reader to consider carefully what might happen to someone who tried to remain neutral—or worse, gave comfort to the enemy—during a revolutionary crisis. Although the story contains marvelous humor, it reminds us of the pressure a community could bring to bear on enemies and skeptics. The narrator, who sympathizes with the British, returns to his room after a supper with some jovial companions and is struck by terror when he hears an awful sound nearby. The noise continues until a "violent wrap against" his window signals the entrance of an angel, who pulls up a chair and delivers two messages. First, the angel says, if the narrator does not cease to oppress his countrymen, he will end up in hell. Second, the Devil is going to drop by tomorrow night to tell him so in person. Like Scrooge, the narrator tries to convince himself that his first nocturnal visitor was merely a delusion, but he never quite succeeds. The next night, as predicted, the Devil—a rational, cool- headed gentleman—appears and asks the narrator how he became such an enemy to his country.

(1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022).

Those who hold this concentration upon loyalty have made a commitment to someone or some worthy quality. A vow is made never to fall below a lofty, inspired standard of ethical behavior and commitment on every level of awareness. A loyal person is purified and uplifted by the very act of staying true to the commitment to uphold the high standard, and never forsake it. One of the special gifts bestowed by loyalty upon the person who has taken on its mantle is inner peace, a paradoxical gift: by giving it away toward another, you receive the solace yourself of always dwelling where there is no betrayal. Although loyalty appears to limit one​s options and restrict freedom, on the contrary, committing to be loyal opens a beautiful, inner world of refined emotions and peace of mind which is not accessible by any other means. Balmforth1 (Bluestone Rising Scholar Honorable Mention 2019) Abstract In 1832, a woman named Caṅkari Nāki died in Ceylon, and her descendants have been haunted by a curse ever since. One of the first converts of the American Ceylon Mission, Nāki was part of an enslaved caste community unique to the island, and one of the few oppressed-caste members of the mission. The circumstances of her death are unclear; the missionary archive is silent on an event that one can presume would have affected the small Christian community, while the family narrative passed through generations is that Nāki was murdered by members of the locally dominant Vellalar caste after marrying one of their own. In response to this archival erasure, this essay draws on historical methods developed by Saidiya Hartman and Gaiutra Bahadur to be accountable to enslaved and indentured lives and, in Hartman’s words, to ‘make visible the production of disposable lives.’ These methods actively question what we can know from the archives of an oppressor and, for this essay, enable a reading of Nāki’s life at the centre of a mission struggling over how to approach caste. Nāki’s story, I argue, helps reveal an underexplored aspect of the interrelationship between caste and slavery in South Asia, and underlines the value of considering South Asian slave narratives as source material into historiographically- and archivally-obscured aspects of dominant caste identity.
