These were Akhmatova’s first poems about the civil war and were later included in the larger collection Anno Domini MCMXXI published in early 1922. There followed a period of stigmatisation brought on in part by the execution of her former husband Nikolai Gumilev (see items 15-16 etc.) in 1921, and her work was effectively banned in 1925.
