  • PICASSO Les Livres D’Artiste E T Tis R a D’ S Vre Li S Le PICASSO
PICASSO LES LIVRES d’ARTISTE The collection of Mr. A*** collection ofThe Mr. d’artiste livres Les PICASSO PICASSO Les livres d’artiste The collection of Mr. A*** Author’s note Years ago, at the University of Washington, I had the opportunity to teach a class on the ”Late Picasso.” For a specialist in nineteenth-century art, this was a particularly exciting and daunting opportunity, and one that would prove formative to my thinking about art’s history. Picasso does not allow for temporalization the way many other artists do: his late works harken back to old masterpieces just as his early works are themselves masterpieces before their time, and the many years of his long career comprise a host of “periods” overlapping and quoting one another in a form of historico-cubist play that is particularly Picassian itself. Picasso’s ability to engage the art-historical canon in new and complex ways was in no small part influenced by his collaborative projects. It is thus with great joy that I return to the varied treasures that constitute the artist’s immense creative output, this time from the perspective of his livres d’artiste, works singularly able to point up his transcendence across time, media, and culture. It is a joy and a privilege to be able to work with such an incredible collection, and I am very grateful to Mr. A***, and to Umberto Pregliasco and Filippo Rotundo for the opportunity to contribute to this fascinating project. The writing of this catalogue is indebted to the work of Sebastian Goeppert, Herma Goeppert-Frank, and Patrick Cramer, whose Pablo Picasso.

  • Central and Eastern Europe: Germany
Central and Eastern Europe Germany National Affairs Since 2005 Germany had been governed by a center-right coalition pairing Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's Social Democrats (SPD). Merkel's international standing enjoyed a boost in 2007 due in part to her presidency of the 27-member European Union from January to June and of the G-8 industrialized nations throughout the year. On the domestic front, an improving economy and falling un- employment helped win popular support for the government. In May, in her role as EU president, Merkel cohosted an interreligious conference in Brussels. Afterwards, she said she no longer planned to in- clude a reference to "Christian values" in a new draft of the proposed Eu- ropean constitution, due to objections from Muslims and Jews. Germany maintained and extended its presence in northern Afghanistan in 2007, despite popular opposition. About 3,200 German troops and six Tornado reconnaissance jets with up to 500 soldiers were part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. In Octo- ber, the Bundestag approved a one-year extension, with only the Left Party opposed. The next month the Bundestag also approved another year of support for Operation Enduring Freedom, which deployed up to 1,400 German troops in the Horn of Africa and up to 100 special-force personnel in Afghanistan. A number of tragic incidents fueled public criticism of such commit- ments. Three German soldiers were killed in May in a suicide bombing. In July, a Taliban group kidnapped two German engineers.

  • 2 Work List Histories of a Collection. 1933-1945
List of Works: Histories of a Collection. 1933–1945 Karl Hofer (1878–1955), The Black Rooms (Version II), 1943 The backdrop is reminiscent of the musical interlude that bridges two acts of a play while the set is being changed. There is nothing casual about the atmosphere of the scene, however. On the contrary: the drumming conveys a high degree of tension. The first version of the picture was painted in 1928 and bore the title “The Drummer”. This could be a reference to Adolf Hitler, who had been casting himself as drumming up support for the national cause since 1919. When the first version was destroyed in the artist’s studio during an air raid in 1943, Hofer immediately set about painting a second version. The replacement became a metaphor for the “black years” of National Socialism. In 1943 the dark vision of the picture became a reality. More than ever the colour black symbolises mourning and obliteration. Acquired in 1953 from the artist by the State of Berlin PROLOGUE: AN EXCHANGE OF PICTURES WITH ITALY Carlo Carrà (1881–1966), Houses Beneath Hills, 1924 Acquired 1932 Felice Casorati (1883–1963), The Mother, 1923/24 Acquired 1932 Giovanni Colacicchi (1900–1992), Sunny Street, 1931 Acquired 1932 Giorgio de Chirico (1888–1979), Serenade, 1909 Acquired 1932 Giorgio de Chirico (1888–1979), Portrait of Brother Andrea, 1909/10 Acquired 1932 Achille Funi (1890–1972), Saint Sebastian, 1925 Acquired 1932 Achille Funi (1890–1972), Publius Horatius Murders His Sister, 1932 Acquired 1932 Giuseppe Montanari (1889–1976), The Death of Christ, 1932 Acquired 1932 Alberto Salietti (1892–1961), Woman with Headscarf, 1927 Acquired 1932 Gino Severini (1883–1966), Composition: The Dove, c.
