PICASSO LES LIVRES d’ARTISTE The collection of Mr. A*** collection ofThe Mr. d’artiste livres Les PICASSO PICASSO Les livres d’artiste The collection of Mr. A*** Author’s note Years ago, at the University of Washington, I had the opportunity to teach a class on the ”Late Picasso.” For a specialist in nineteenth-century art, this was a particularly exciting and daunting opportunity, and one that would prove formative to my thinking about art’s history. Picasso does not allow for temporalization the way many other artists do: his late works harken back to old masterpieces just as his early works are themselves masterpieces before their time, and the many years of his long career comprise a host of “periods” overlapping and quoting one another in a form of historico-cubist play that is particularly Picassian itself. Picasso’s ability to engage the art-historical canon in new and complex ways was in no small part influenced by his collaborative projects. It is thus with great joy that I return to the varied treasures that constitute the artist’s immense creative output, this time from the perspective of his livres d’artiste, works singularly able to point up his transcendence across time, media, and culture. It is a joy and a privilege to be able to work with such an incredible collection, and I am very grateful to Mr. A***, and to Umberto Pregliasco and Filippo Rotundo for the opportunity to contribute to this fascinating project. The writing of this catalogue is indebted to the work of Sebastian Goeppert, Herma Goeppert-Frank, and Patrick Cramer, whose Pablo Picasso.

  • George Condo's
A New Show That Puts George Condo Next to Picasso By: Hilary Moss November 18, 2016 From left: George Condo’s “Telepoche Cut-Out,” 1989; Henri Matisse’s “Vegetable Elements,” 1947. When Udo Kittelmann, the director of Berlin’s Nationalgalerie, initially floated the idea of an exhibition that would position George Condo’s work against pieces from Museum Berggruen’s 20th-century art collection, the American painter had some doubts. “Udo said, ‘You make so many modernist references,’ but I didn’t want to have a George Condo at random sitting next to a Picasso or a Matisse,” Condo remembers. “You’d see the absolute differences, as much as it appears to be referential.” Kittelmann spent two full days rummaging through the artist’s New York storage space, finally landing on a nontraditional approach, and convinced Condo to go along with it: The curator cleared out the museum’s 28 rooms, installed his pick of 118 Condo paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures — most never shown before — and then reinstalled parts of the Berggruen’s collection accordingly. The resulting show, called “Confrontation,” opens tomorrow in Berlin and places, for instance, Paul Klee tableaus marked by the expressionist’s swooping signature near a mid- ’80s, semi-surrealist Condo painting of his last name. Blue- and rose-period Picassos are complemented by similarly hued Condos; Georges Braque’s Cubist compositions echo a more recent oil painting of a man’s head split by a meat cleaver; and Matisse’s cutouts stand next to a few of Condo’s late-’80s and early-’90s collages.

  • Central and Eastern Europe: Germany
Central and Eastern Europe Germany National Affairs Since 2005 Germany had been governed by a center-right coalition pairing Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's Social Democrats (SPD). Merkel's international standing enjoyed a boost in 2007 due in part to her presidency of the 27-member European Union from January to June and of the G-8 industrialized nations throughout the year. On the domestic front, an improving economy and falling un- employment helped win popular support for the government. In May, in her role as EU president, Merkel cohosted an interreligious conference in Brussels. Afterwards, she said she no longer planned to in- clude a reference to "Christian values" in a new draft of the proposed Eu- ropean constitution, due to objections from Muslims and Jews. Germany maintained and extended its presence in northern Afghanistan in 2007, despite popular opposition. About 3,200 German troops and six Tornado reconnaissance jets with up to 500 soldiers were part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. In Octo- ber, the Bundestag approved a one-year extension, with only the Left Party opposed. The next month the Bundestag also approved another year of support for Operation Enduring Freedom, which deployed up to 1,400 German troops in the Horn of Africa and up to 100 special-force personnel in Afghanistan. A number of tragic incidents fueled public criticism of such commit- ments. Three German soldiers were killed in May in a suicide bombing. In July, a Taliban group kidnapped two German engineers.
