It shows that there was a need for such a work, and that this need has been met. The book has been received with far greater favor, in all parts of our Church, than we had dared to hope. While there have been differences of opinion on certain points—which was to be expected— there have been no serious criticisms. This new edition is not a revision, but a reprint. In only two places has the text been corrected. On page 7 of the Introduction we have added a foot­ note, because the blunt statement of the text was liable to be misunderstood.

Aber nur wenige von ihnen wis­ sen etwas über das Glaubensleben der finnischen Kirche und die in ihr so lebendige Erweckungsbewegung, die nun schon über 170 Jahre wirksam ist. Um eine geistige Bewegung recht verstehen zu können, ist es nötig, auch etwas über ihren geographischen Hinter­ grund zu wissen. Darum sei dieser Arbeit ein Gedicht von dem finnischen Dichter Eino Leino über Finnland voran­ gestellt: Finnland Einst zog der Heiland auch nach Norden weit, wo Finnland liegt in seiner Einsamkeit. Nur zögernd folgte Petrus seinem Herrn; Wacholderpfade wandelt er nicht gern. "Ach Herr, in welches Land sind wir gelangt! Welch Volk, das ohne Kraft und Willen schwankt! Das Moor verhöhnt den Pflug, Schutt deckt die Felder, Frucht tragen hierzulande nur die Wälder." Doch mild und leise redete Herr Christ: "Daß dieses Land ein wenig ärmlich ist und allzu karge Ernten trägt, macht Sorgen; doch Zukunft ist in dieser Art verborgen." Es lächelte der Herr, indem er sprach.

Wer weiß z.B. , daß der Jensendamm an einen frühere Stadtbaurat erinnert oder daß der Blocksberg nach einem dort ehemals ansässigen Gärtner Block benannt ist? In diesen Fällen erschließt sich der Hinter- grund erst durch Nachforschung. Vielfach spiegeln die Namen auch die jeweilige politische und gesellschaftli- che Situation ihrer Entstehung wider, so nutzten z.B. die Nationalsozialisten diese Form der Ehrung ihrer Vor- bilder. Nach 1945 wurden diese Namen dann wieder ersetzt. Straßenbenennungen der jüngsten Zeit weisen auf ein gewachsenes Bewußtsein für die Bedeutung der Frauen in der Geschichte hin. Bis jetzt sind viele Auflagen der Broschüre Kieler "Straßennamen - Herkunft und Bedeutung" erschienen, die der bereits in den Ruhestand getretene Mitarbeiter der Statistikstelle Kiel Hans-Christian Voß entwickelt und betreut hat. Diese Publikation erfreute sich stets lebhafter Nachfrage und wurde sogar gelegentlich in den Schulunterricht einbezogen.

March 3rd, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1080/0039338X.2019.1685592 Therapeutic Turn: Pastoral Care in Finnish Lutheranism Before and After the 1960s This paper offers a systematic and critical exploration of contemporary theology of pastoral care in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland in light of history of practice of care and Western cultural change. Currently pastoral care is characterized by therapeutic approach that aims to offer sincere help for earthly suffering and to promote the goods the individual chooses to reach for. This has been a drastic change from historical models from Luther to the early twentieth century that were spiritual and paternalistic in nature. The therapeutic turn connects to the therapeutic culture that has set self-actualization as a central idea to determine Western cultural ethos. The therapeutic approach calls into question how the spiritual task of the church is carried out. The currently prevailing pastoral psychological theology of pastoral care proves to be problematic. The spiritual task of pastoral care should be relied on basic Lutheran theology of God as objective and not to be conditional on human mind. Yet the therapeutic aim should still be held as the basic approach of care.
