Faye Greer 2020-05-17 On the Life and Faith of Florence Nightingale by Lynn McDonald, CM, PhD, LLD (Hon.), professor emerita (Note: The following reflection is offered for use in churches for the celebration of the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, which was in 1820. Observances are taking place throughout 2020 to commemorate her.) Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing. Despite family pressures to marry and live as a conventional wealthy woman, she considered her dedication to nursing to be a response to God’s call to care for the sick. Her success in radically lowering the death rate of wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853–1856) led to society’s acceptance of her proposals for better sanitation and nutrition, accurate medical knowledge, and professionally trained nurses. Three of her grandparents were Unitarians, but the one grandparent she knew was fiercely evangelical Church of England. Nightingale never identified as a Unitarian but remained in the Church of England, much as she disagreed with its social and theological conservatism. -

It shows that there was a need for such a work, and that this need has been met. The book has been received with far greater favor, in all parts of our Church, than we had dared to hope. While there have been differences of opinion on certain points—which was to be expected— there have been no serious criticisms. This new edition is not a revision, but a reprint. In only two places has the text been corrected. On page 7 of the Introduction we have added a foot note, because the blunt statement of the text was liable to be misunderstood. -

Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity. -

The focus in this regard is Young Earth Creationism and the catastrophic nature of the global Genesis Flood keeping in mind that Genesis 1-11 is foundational to most of the significant doctrines of Holy Scripture. Of course, laymen may well also find this reference a valuable resource. There is obviously a realistic interplay between Scripture, apologetics and true science. The Devotional Writers and Lutheran Spirituality The heart of Lutheran spirituality is found in Luther’s famous axiom Oratio, Meditatio, Tentatio (prayer, meditation, and affliction). The one who has been declared righteous through faith in Christ the crucified and who has died and rose in Baptism will, as the psalmist says, “delight … in the Law of the Lord and in His Law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). He will read, mark, learn, and take the Word to heart. Luther writes concerning meditation on the Biblical truths in the preface of the Large Catechism, “In such reading, conversation, and meditation the Holy Spirit is present and bestows ever new and greater light and devotion, so that it tastes better and better and is digested, as Christ also promises in Matthew 18[:20].”1 Through the Word and Sacraments the entire Trinity makes its dwelling in us and we have union and communion with the divine and are conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29; Colossians 3:10). -

Seeking an Interpretive Discrimen in the Evangelical Covenant Church C. JOHN WEBORG he intent of this paper, voiced from the perspective of a theo- logian in the Covenant Church, is to focus on early Mission TFriends in the context of their history, especially as to how theological formation was taking place. Their Lutheran worship, bib- lical and catechetical instruction, and engagement with Pietism and Revivalism both clarified and, at the same time, made the formation of an interpretive discrimen a complex process. A discrimen, borrow- ing from David Kelsey, is a “configuration of criteria that are in some way organically related,” whereas a norm “is assumed to be absolute or by its very nature to exclude the acceptance of other theological norms.”1 The first part of this configuration of criteria lies in the Lutheran heritage of the Mission Friends. THE MISSION FRIENDS LIVED WITH A LUTHERAN MENTALITY BUT NOT A LUTHERAN METHODOLOGY By mentality I mean appeals to something like an ecclesiastical family identity, a body of writings used at various levels of authority to authorize, defend, explain, or exposit an idea or action, and to use words that nested in a specific tradition. The Oxford Dictionary of Word Histories dates the word “mentality” to the seventeenth century and notes its meaning as a “mental process.”2 The Mission Friends were not biblicistic, despite Waldenström’s question “Where is it written?” While seeking to be biblical, they employed a range of sources for their thought processes, none more valuable than Luther. This mentality worked itself out in the following three ways. -

REFLECTION “Müde bin ich, geh’ zur Ruh”: The Story of a Children’s Prayer Margaret Loewen Reimer The children’s prayer, Müde bin ich, geh’ zur Ruh, is dear to the heart of many Mennonites who grew up in German-speaking homes. A recent request for an English translation sent me on a quest to discover what was available. The translations I found were unsatisfactory, and so I resumed work on my own translation, which I had begun years ago. Meanwhile, I decided to trace the origins of this classic little prayer. The search uncovered a surprisingly rich story. Müde bin ich first appeared in a songbook for nursery school children compiled by Theodor Fliedner in Kaiserswerth, Germany in 1842.1 That is why the tune is sometimes identified as “Kaiserswerth” or “Fliedner.” It is likely that the melody is based on a popular folk tune, as are many familiar hymns. The words were written by Luise Hensel (1798-1876), a widely-read religious poet and hymn writer, and a woman who led a remarkable life.2 Hensel’s father was a Lutheran pastor in Brandenburg. Her brother, well- known painter Wilhelm Hensel, was married to Fanny Mendelssohn, sister of Felix. After the death of her father in 1809, Luise moved to Berlin with her mother. Here she captured the attention of several remarkable men. Romantic poet Clemens Brentano acknowledged her influence on his poetry and apparently shared with composer Ludwig Berger an unrequited love for Luise. Another poet, Wilhelm Müller, was also attracted to her. Today, Müller is remembered for his Waldhornisten poems, which Franz Schubert set to music in his song cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise. -

Braaten and Philip Clayton, editors Minneapolis: Augsburg Publishing House, 1988 352 pp. with bibliography. $37.50 Wolfhart Pannenberg is one of the most prolific and celebrated contem- porary theologians. This volume—which marks 25 years since Pannenberg first travelled to the U.S. as a visiting professor—promises to be “an accu- rate barometer of the influence Pannenberg has had in America, as well as the sorts of reservations that English-speaking theology brings to his work” ( 10). This is a rather eclectic work, representing a wide cross-section of con- tributors and subjects. As is the case in most volumes of this nature, some essays are more creative and stimulating than others—depending, of course, upon one’s theological agenda and posture.
