Promoting Sustainable Rural Development in the Ccapi District, Peru. Diploma Thesis. Brno, 2015 This diploma thesis presents and analyses the possibilities of promoting sustainable rural development in the Ccapi District, Cusco Region in Peru. The aim of the thesis is to propose a development project which contributes to an increase in economic, environmental and social opportunities for the poor and improvement in standard of living of the local communities with regard to their cultural values. The project is designed in response to the major causes of poverty and environmental degradation in the rural Andean areas of the Ccapi District. Based on results obtained from the literature, field survey, and semi-structured interviews with the local families and authorities, the paper analyses the initial situation and proposes a set of innovations which should be adopted by the vast majority of the residents living in the communities and therefore should contribute to the sustainable rural development. At the end, concrete results of the implemented project are presented and recommendations for further research in the area suggested. Diplomová práce. Brno, 2015 Tato diplomová práce prezentuje a analyzuje možnosti podpory udržitelného rozvoje venkova v okresu Ccapi v regionu Cusco v Peru. Cílem práce je vytvořit projekt, který přispívá ke zvýšení hospodářských, environmentálních a sociálních příležitostí pro chudé a zlepšení životní úrovně v místních komunitách s ohledem na jejich kulturní hodnoty. Projekt je navržen v reakci na hlavní příčiny chudoby a zhoršování životního prostředí v andských venkovských oblastech okresu Ccapi. Na základě výsledků získaných z literatury, terénního šetření a polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s místními rodinami a autoritami, práce analyzuje výchozí stav a navrhuje soubor inovací, který by měl být přijat převážnou většinou obyvatel komunit a přispět tak k udržitelnému rozvoji venkova. Na závěr jsou předloženy konkrétní výsledky realizovaného projektu a navržena doporučení pro další výzkum v této oblasti. A legal system can be found in State institutions as well as in non-state ones. Nevertheless, State law has a great strength in influencing the semi-autonomous social fields of a given society (Moore 1973). 9. With respect to law peasants identify themselves, with their Andean rules, procedures, sanctions and decisions. When one of their institutions becomes old fashioned, they just change it. 10. The term "community" denotes different realities, and is used by various social protagonists with different meanings.

To understand such mining conflicts in Chamaca, this thesis examines how colonial logics and power relations underpin contemporary development policies of the Peruvian state. In particular, I analyze how the historical entanglements of race, indigenous land tenure and labor, and mining inform contemporary extractivist policies. Photo by author. Mural painting was a longstanding artistic practice in the Andean region of South America, stretching back to at least the third millennium BCE. Numerous coastal cultures of Peru, including the Cupisnique, Moche, and Chimú civilizations, produced stunning polychrome murals that decorated both the interiors and exteriors of religious temples and residences. Their iconography was diverse, including mythological scenes, representations of deities, and sacrificial rituals. Fewer mural remains are found at highland sites due to preservation issues, but traces of mural decoration can be found at the pre-Columbian sites of Raqchi and Quispiguanca, among others. Mural paintings frequently possessed iconographic and stylistic resemblances to portable media such as ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. These large-scale public works of art broadcast religious ideologies, mythologies, and cultural values to their constituents, serving as an important conduit for the transmission of knowledge and belief systems. Mural painting in particular became a favored medium in early evangelization efforts because of its relatively low cost and shorter execution time in comparison to multimedia pieces such as retablos (altarpieces) and polychrome sculptures.

    The Essence of the Inka: An Interdisciplinary Investigation of the Saqsawaman Landscape Justin A. Anspach All rights reserved Abstract The Essence of the Inka: An Interdisciplinary Investigation of the Saqsawaman Landscape Justin A. Anspach This dissertation presents an interdisciplinary research project studying Inka engagement with the heavily modified ritual landscape of the 3000 hectare Saqsawaman Archaeological Park, located just north of the former imperial capital of Cuzco. First, through a close reading of cosmogenesis narratives, and a careful application of ethnographic comparison, I examine the nature of actors and agency in Andean and Inka thought and practice. Specifically, I bring up five themes - vitality, communication, identity, complementarity, and positioning - that are prevalent in Andean cosmology and that were therefore capitalized on in the built landscapes of the Inka. While prior research has focused on Inka stonework, I argue that it is the combination of stone with other elements - most notably water and the subterranean - that allows the most symbolically powerful deployment of landscape in epistemology and cosmology. This argument is supported by an archaeological examination that uses survey and GIS techniques to map the Inka efforts at landscape manipulation in Saqsawaman. The results show that the Inka focused their efforts on areas where a combination of stone and water, along with subterranean access and viewsheds of sacred landscape, allowed for a more symbolically rich engagement with their universe. The ethnographic research and the survey together show that while stone was an important and enduring element in Andean belief systems, it is actually water which was the most important element of the ritual practice that sustained the cosmological universe.
