Bellino מדרש רבה איכה פרשה א פסקה א MIDRASH RABBAH - LAMENTATIONS I:1 איכה ישבה שלשה נתנבאו בלשון איכה HOW (EKAH) DOTH THE CITY SIT SOLITARY! (I, 1). Three uttered משה ישעיה וירמיה משה אמר )דברים prophecies using the word ekah, viz. Moses, Isaiah, and א'( איכה אשא לבדי וגו' ישעיה אמר Jeremiah. Moses said, How can I myself alone bear your )ישעיה א'( איכה היתה לזונה ירמיה cumbrance! (Deut. I, 12). Isaiah said, How is the faithful city אמר איכה ישבה בדד א"ר לוי משל become a harlot! (Isa. I, 21). Jeremiah said, How DOTH THE CITY למטרונה שהיו לה שלשה שושבינין אחד SIT SOLITARY! R. Levi said: It may be likened to a matron who ראה אותה בשלותה ואחד ראה אותה had had three groomsmen: one beheld her in her happiness, a בפחזותה ואחד ראה אותה בניוולה כך second beheld her in her infidelity, and the third beheld her in her disgrace. Similarly, Moses beheld Israel in their glory and משה ראה את ישראל בכבודם ושלותם happiness and exclaimed, ’How can I myself alone bear your ואמר איכה אשא לבדי טרחכם ישעיה cumbrance!’ Isaiah beheld them in their infidelity and ראה אותם בפחזותם ואמר איכה היתה exclaimed, ’How is the faithful city become a harlot! ’ Jeremiah לזונה ירמיה ראה אותם בניוולם ואמר beheld them in their disgrace and exclaimed, How DOTH THE איכה ישבה !CITY SIT SOLITARY שאלו את בן עזאי אמרו לו רבינו דרוש The disciples] requested Ben ‘Azzai saying, ‘Master, expound to] לנו דבר אחד ממגילת קינות אמר להם us something connected with the Book of Lamentations.’ He לא גלו ישראל עד שכפרו ביחידו של said to them: ‘Israel did not go into exile until they had עולם ובמילה שנתנה לעשרים דורות repudiated the Divine Unity, circumcision which bad been given ובעשרת הדברות ובחמשה ספרי תורה to the twentieth generation, the Decalogue, and the מנין איכ"ה Pentateuch. Whence have we this? From the letters constituting the word ekah.’ א"ר לוי לא גלו ישראל עד שכפרו R. Levi said: Israel did not go into exile until they had repudiated בשלשים ושש כריתות שבתורה ובעשרת the thirty-six ordinances in the Torah for which the penalty is הדברות מנין איכ"ה ישבה בדד excision, and also the Decalogue. Whence have we this? From the numerical value of the letters constituting the words Ekah and badad (‘solitary’). ר' ברכיה בשם רבי אבדימי דמן חיפה R. Berekiah said in the name of R. Abdimi of Haifa: It may be למלך שהיה לו בן בזמן שעושה רצונו של likened to a king who had a son. So long as he obeyed the will of אביו היה מלבישו בגדי מילתין ובזמן his father he clothed him in garments of fine wool, but when he שאינו עושה רצונו מלבישו בגדי בדד כך disregarded his will he clothed him in exiles’ garments. Similarly ישראל כל זמן שהיו עושין רצונו של ,with Israel. So long as they obeyed the will of the Holy One הקב"ה כתיב )יחזקאל ט"ז( ואלבישך blessed be He, it is written, I clothed thee also with richly רקמה ר' סימא אמר פורפירא תרגם woven work (Ezek. XVI, 10). (R. Sima said: The word means 'in אונקלוס אפקלטורין פליקטא ובזמן שאין purple garments’, and Onkelos renders by 'embroidered garments’.) But when they disregarded the will of the Holy One, עושין רצונו של הקב"ה מלבישן בגדי blessed be He, He clothed them in exiles’ (bedadin) garments, בדדין הה"ד איכה ישבה בדד !as it is written, HOW DOTH THE CITY SIT SOLITARY--BADAD 1 אמר רב נחמן אמר שמואל משום ריב"ל R. Nahman reported that Samuel said in the name of R. Joshua קרא הקב"ה למלאכי השרת אמר להם b. Levi: The Holy One, blessed be He, summoned the מלך בשר ודם כשמת לו מת והוא ministering angels and said to them: ' If a human king had a son מתאבל מה דרכו לעשות אמרו לו תולה who died and mourns for him, what is it customary for him to שק על פתחו אמר להם אף אני כך אני do?’ They replied, ‘He hangs sackcloth over his door.’ He said to עושה הדא הוא דכתיב )ישעיה נ'( them, ‘I will do likewise.’ That is what is written, I clothe the אלביש שמים קדרות ושק אשים כסותם heavens with blackness, and I make sackeloth their covering מלך בשר ודם מה דרכו לעשות אמרו לו Isa. ' What does a human king do?’ They דרכו לעשות כופה את המטות כך אני replied, ‘He overturns his couch.’ He said to them, ‘I will do עושה שנאמר )דניאל ז'( עד דכרסון רמיו likewise’; as it is stated, Till thrones were cast down, and One ועתיק יומין יתיב כביכול שהיו הפוכין that was ancient of days did sit (Dan. VII, 9)--if it is possible to מלך בשר ודם מה דרכו לעשות הולך ’?say so, they were overturned. What does a human king do יחף כך אני עושה שנא' )נחום א'( ה' They replied, ‘He walks barefoot.’ He said to them, ' I will do בסופה ובסערה דרכו וענן אבק רגליו likewise ‘; as it is stated, The Lord, in the whirlwind and in the מלך בשר ודם מה דרכו לעשות מבזע ,storm is His way, and clouds are the dust of His feet (Nahum I פורפירא שלו כך אני עושה דכתיב עשה What does a human king do?’ They replied, ‘He rends his‘ .(3 ה' אשר זמם בצע אמרתו רבי יעקב purple robes.’ He said to them, ‘I will do likewise’; as it is דכפר חנן מפרש ליה מהו בצע אמרתו ’written, The Lord hath done that which He devised (bizza מבזע פורפירא שלו מלך בשר ודם מה emrato) He hath performed His word (Lam. II, 17). (R. Jacob of דרכו לעשות יושב ודומם כך אני עושה Kefar-Hanan explained: What means ’bizza’ emrato’? He rent שנאמר )איכה ג'( ישב בדד וידום מלך His purple.) What does a human king do?’ They replied, ‘He sits בשר ודם אבל מה דרכו לעשות יושב ,in silence.’ He said to them, ‘I will do likewise ‘; as it is stated He sitteth alone and keepeth silence (ib. III, 28). ‘What does a ובוכה כך אני עושה דכתיב )ישעיה כ"ב( human king do when mourning?’ They replied, ‘He sits and ויקרא ה' אלהים צבאות ביום ההוא לבכי ,weeps.’ He said to them, ' I will do likewise ‘; as it is written ולמספד ולקרחה ,And in that day did the Lord, the God of hosts, call to weeping and to lamentation, and to baldness (Isa. XXII, 12). ד"א איכה אמר להם ירמיה מה ראיתם :!Another interpretation of HOW DOTH THE CITY SIT SOLITARY בעבודת כוכבים שאתם להוטין אחריה Jeremiah said to Israel: What do you see in an idol that you so אילו היה לה פה למיסב ולמיתב היינו ,yearn for it? If it possessed a mouth so as to be able to argue אומרין כך אלא נאמר דידה ונאמר דיליה we would have spoken thus and thus. Since, however, [it is נאמר דידה )ירמיה י'( כה אמר ה' אל incapable of speech,] let us state its position and let us state דרך הגוים אל תלמדו ומאותות השמים His. Let us state its position: Thus saith the Lord: Learn not the אל תחתו כי יחתו הגוים מהמה ונאמר ;way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven דיליה )שם( כדנה תאמרון לחוס אלהיא for the nations are dismayed at them (Jer. X, 2). And let us state His: Thus shall ye say unto them: The gods that have not made די שמיא וארקא וגו' )שם( לא כאלה חלק the heavens and the earth, these shall perish (ib. 11). But Not יעקב כי יוצר הכל הוא וישראל שבט like these is the portion of Jacob; for He is the former of all נחלתו ה' צבאות שמו things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the Lord of hosts is His name (ib. 16). 2 רבי יהודה ור' נחמיה ר' יהודה אומר אין R. Judah and R. Nehemiah comment. R. Judah says: The word לשון איכה אלא לשון תוכחה הדא מה ekah’ implies nothing else than reproof; as it is stated, How’ דאת אמר )שם ח'( איכה תאמרו חכמים ekah) do ye say: We are wise, and the Law of the Lord is with) אנחנו ותורת ה' אתנו וגו' ור' נחמיה us? (ib. VIII, 8). R. Nehemiah says: The word ’ekah’ implies אומר אין לשון איכה אלא קינה הדא מה nothing else than lament; as it is stated, And the Lord God דאת אמר )בראשית ג'( ויקרא ה' אלהים --called unto the man, and said unto him: Where art thou אל האדם ויאמר לו איכה אוי לכה .(ayyekah? (Gen. III, 9), meaning, ‘woe unto thee’ (oi lekah ואימתי נאמרה מגילות קינות רבי יהודה :When was the Book of Lamentations composed? R. Judah says אומר בימי יהויקים נאמרה אמר לו ר' ,In the days of Jehoiakim. R. Nehemiah said to him, ' Do we נחמיה וכי בוכין על המת עד שלא ימות then, weep over a dead person before he dies!     religions Article The Anti‑Samaritan Attitude as Reflected in Rabbinic Midrashim Andreas Lehnardt Faculty of Protestant Theology, Johannes Gutenberg‑University Mainz, 55122 Mainz, Germany; lehnardt@uni‑mainz.de Abstract: Samaritans, as a group within the ranges of ancient ‘Judaisms’, are often mentioned in Talmud and Midrash. As comparable social–religious entities, they are regarded ambivalently by the rabbis. First, they were viewed as Jews, but from the end of the Tannaitic times, and especially after the Bar Kokhba revolt, they were perceived as non‑Jews, not reliable about different fields of Halakhic concern. Rabbinic writings reflect on this change in attitude and describe a long ongoing conflict and a growing anti‑Samaritan attitude. This article analyzes several dialogues betweenrab‑ bis and Samaritans transmitted in the Midrash on the book of Genesis, Bereshit Rabbah. In four larger sections, the famous Rabbi Me’ir is depicted as the counterpart of certain Samaritans. The analyses of these discussions try to show how rabbinic texts avoid any direct exegetical dispute over particular verses of the Torah, but point to other hermeneutical levels of discourse and the rejection of Samari‑ tan claims. These texts thus reflect a remarkable understanding of some Samaritan convictions, and they demonstrate how rabbis denounced Samaritanism and refuted their counterparts. The Rabbi Me’ir dialogues thus are an impressive literary witness to the final stages of the parting of ways of these diverging religious streams. It demonstrates that Midrash ​ ​ ha-Ne’lam, more often thought of as a mystical midrash, incorporates both rhetorical ​ components from the Babylonian Talmud and practices of cognitive creativity from the medieval discipline of talmudic study into its esoteric midrash. By mapping these intersections of Midrash, Talmud, and Esotericism, this dissertation introduces a new framework for studying rabbinic interdisciplinarity—the ways that different rabbinic disciplines impact and transform each other. The first half of this dissertation examines medieval and modern attempts to connect or disconnect the disciplines of talmudic study and Jewish esotericism. Spanning from Maimonides’ reliance on Islamic models of Aristotelian dialectic to conjoin Pardes (Jewish ​ ​ esotericism) and talmudic logic, to Gershom Scholem’s juvenile fascination with the Babylonian Talmud, to contemporary endeavours to remedy the disciplinary schisms generated by Scholem’s founding models of Kabbalah (as a form of Judaism that is in tension with “rabbinic Judaism”), these two chapters tell a series of overlapping histories of Jewish inter/disciplinary projects.

(NASB) The psalmist speaks of his situation relating this to his sustenance, which is directly related to the provision of the Lord for our daily bread (Tehillim / Psalms 102:9-11). Even though all of these things have happened, the psalmist continues in his faith saying, 102:12 But You, O Lord, abide forever, And Your name to all gen- erations.

Why then does not the one who quotes ‘ed have ed? — He might say: What is it that brings about that calamity [if not] their testimony? hence the term ‘ed [‘testimony’] is more apt. But does the verse, Let them bring their witnesses that they may be justified, refer to idolaters at all? It surely refers to Israel; as R. Joshua b. Levi said: All the good deeds which Israel does in this world will bear testimony unto them in the world to come, as it is said: Let them bring their witnesses that they may be justified — that is Israel; And let them hear and say: It is truth — these are the idolaters.

This doctoral thesis presents an analysis of the quest for the Lost Princess in Rabbi Nachman of Braslav’s “Book of Stories in Ancient Times.” The image of the Lost Princess and the quest to find and rescue her, which appear in four of these stories (including the first and the last ones), are central symbols in Rabbi Nachman’s thought. The most important key to an analysis of this image and theme lies in understanding the symbols and concepts of the Jewish mystical tradition (the Kabbalah), as Rabbi Nachman himself suggested.     The History of our Prayers - OBM June/July 2020 - Sources English The History of Communal Prayer Berakhot 8a:1 What is the meaning of that which is written: “But as for me, let my prayer be unto You, ​ ​ Lord, in a time of favor; O God, in the abundance of Your mercy, answer me with the truth of ​ Your salvation” (Psalms 69:14)? It appears that the individual is praying that his prayers will coincide with a special time of Divine favor. When is a time of favor? It is at the time when ​ ​ ​ the congregation is praying. It is beneficial to pray together with the congregation, for God ​ does not fail to respond to the entreaties of the congregation. Berakhot 2a:1-4 The beginning of tractate Berakhot, the first tractate in the first of the six orders of Mishna, ​ ​ opens with a discussion of the recitation of Shema, as the recitation of Shema encompasses an ​ ​ ​ ​ acceptance of the yoke of Heaven and of the mitzvot, and as such, forms the basis for all subsequent teachings. The Mishna opens with the laws regarding the appropriate time to recite Shema: ​ MISHNA: From when, that is, from what time, does one recite Shema in the evening? From ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ the time when the priests enter to partake of their teruma. Until when does the time for the ​ ​ recitation of the evening Shema extend? Until the end of the first watch. The term used in the ​ ​ ​ ​ Torah (Deuteronomy 6:7) to indicate the time for the recitation of the evening Shema is ​ ​ beshokhbekha, when you lie down, which refers to the time in which individuals go to sleep.
