  • Coastal Fisheries in the Eastern Baltic Sea (Gulf of Finland) and Its Basin from the 15 to the Early 20Th Centuries
Coastal Fisheries in the Eastern Baltic Sea (Gulf of Finland) and Its Basin from the 15 to the Early 20th Centuries Julia Lajus1,2, Alexei Kraikovski2, Dmitry Lajus3* 1 National Research University Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2 European University at St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Russia, 3 St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, Russia Abstract The paper describes and analyzes original data, extracted from historical documents and scientific surveys, related to Russian fisheries in the southeastern part of the Gulf of Finland and its inflowing rivers during the 15- early 20th centuries. The data allow tracing key trends in fisheries development and in the abundance of major commercial species. In particular, results showed that, over time, the main fishing areas moved from the middle part of rivers downstream towards and onto the coastal sea. Changes in fishing patterns were closely interrelated with changes in the abundance of exploited fish. Anadromous species, such as Atlantic sturgeon, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, whitefish, vimba bream, smelt, lamprey, and catadromous eel were the most important commercial fish in the area because they were abundant, had high commercial value and were easily available for fishing in rivers. Due to intensive exploitation and other human-induced factors, populations of most of these species had declined notably by the early 20th century and have now lost commercial significance. The last sturgeon was caught in 1996, and today only smelt and lamprey support small commercial fisheries. According to historical sources, catches of freshwater species such as roach, ide, pike, perch, ruffe and burbot regularly occurred, in some areas exceeding half of the total catch, but they were not as important as migrating fish and no clear trends in abundance are apparent.

  • Merchants of War: Mercenaries, Economy, and Society in the Late Sixteenth-Century Baltic
Merchants of War: Mercenaries, Economy, and Society in the Late Sixteenth-Century Baltic by Joseph Thomas Chatto Sproule A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Thomas Chatto Sproule 2019 Merchants of War: Mercenaries, Economy, and Society in the Late Sixteenth-Century Baltic Joseph Thomas Chatto Sproule Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2019 Abstract The polities of the sixteenth-century Baltic competed and cooperated with one another and with local power groups in fluctuating patterns of rivalry and expedient partnership. Mercenarism thrived in this context, as early modern governments were seldom equipped with the fiscal and logistical tools or the domestic military resources needed to wholly meet the escalating challenges of warfare, while mercenaries themselves were drawn to a chaotic environment that afforded opportunities for monetary gain and promotion into the still- coalescing political elites of the region’s emerging powers. This study sits, like the mercenary himself, at the intersection of the military, the economic, the social, and the political. Broadly, it is an analysis of mercenaries in Livonian and Swedish service during the so-called Livonian War of 1558 to 1583. Mercenaries are examined as agents of the polities for whom they fought and as actors with goals of their own, ambiguously positioned figures whose outsider status and relative independence presented both opportunities and challenges as they navigated the shifting networks of conflict and allegiance that characterized their fractious world. The aims of this study are threefold. The military efficacy of Western and Central European professional soldiers is assessed in an Eastern ii European context, problematizing the notion of Western military superiority in a time of alleged military revolution.

  • Regimes of the Russian– Swedish Border in the Novgorod Lands
Adrian Selin,Kuzma Kukushkin, Ivan Sablin, Elena Kocheryagina REGIMES OF THE RUSSIAN– SWEDISH BORDER IN THE NOVGOROD LANDS BASIC RESEARCH PROGRAM WORKING PAPERS SERIES: HUMANITIES WP BRP 149/HUM/2017 This Working Paper is an output of a research project implemented at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE). Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE Adrian Selin1, Kuzma Kukushkin2, Ivan Sablin3, Elena Kocheryagina4 REGIMES OF THE RUSSIAN–SWEDISH BORDER IN THE NOVGOROD LANDS5 The working paper analysed the infrastructure of the Russian-Swedish border from a transcultural perspective. The history of the border was split into three periods following major changes in political border regimes. The first period covered the history of the border between Sweden and the Novgorod Republic after its formal delimitation in 1323. The annexation of the Novgorod Lands to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1478 marked the beginning of the second period. The third period, which is discussed in detail, covered the history of border infrastructure between the transition of large part of the Novgorod Lands to Sweden in 1617 and 1700. Departing from the debate whether the border was a line or a zone and overcoming state-centred approaches, the working paper demonstrated that the existence of several parallel border regimes during different periods enabled the simultaneous existence of the border as a line and a zone pertaining to different social interactions and subject to manipulation by authorities. The consolidation of the border did not follow the Treaty of Stolbovo (1617), but owed to local demands and an accidental event of an epidemic in 1629– 1630.

The aim of the study was to conduct a radioecological assessment of the Leningrad NPP marine cooling reservoir – Koporye Bay of the Gulf of Finland. According to the international basic safety standards, accepted at the IAEA General Conference, this issue is of particular relevance due to the need to jus- tify protection from technogenic radiation exposure both to humans and the environment. The assess- ment was based on the long-term radioecological monitoring data (1973–2019) within the Leningrad NPP observation area: radionuclides concentration in seawater, bottom sediments, and hydrobionts. The reference levels of radionuclides content in seawater and bottom sediments were used as indicators of the radiation state of the marine environment; their calculation procedure is defined in the Recom- mendations R 52.18.852-2016 and R 52.18.873-2018, issued by the Federal Service for Hydrometeo- rology and Environmental Monitoring (the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Rus- sian Federation).

  • Fisheries on the Southeastern Coast of the Gulf of Finland and the Adjoining River Basins, Th Th 15 -18 Centuries
Fisheries on the southeastern coast of the Gulf of Finland and the adjoining river basins, th th 15 -18 centuries Alexei Kraikovski, Julia Lajus and Dmitry Lajus Introduction Map. The Gulf of Finland, Neva River, and Ladoga Lake region. The Northwest of Russia including the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland with the numerous rivers flowing into the sea, the Neva River basin, Ladoga and Chudskoe (Peipsi) lakes provides many opportunities for fisheries. The Atlantic sturgeon, Atlantic salmon, trout, the Baltic herring and other valu- able commercial fish species have been caught in these waters through the ages. However, the history of fisheries in the Eastern Baltic has not yet been studied. This paper is the first attempt to outline the directions of research, to understand the state of fisheries in different centuries and the main trends of their development. Finnish tribes known later as Izhora settled the territory of the Neva River basin and the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland in the first millennium 197 AD. The Slavs appeared in this region not later than in the tenth century.1 Since early times fisheries were very important for the local inhabitants,2 although agriculture was their main economic activity.3 Since the early Middle Ages the territory of the present St. Petersburg re- gion was part of the possessions of the Great Novgorod.4 The territory of the Novgorod Republic was divided into five parts called Piatina (one fifth). Each Piatina consisted of districts called Uezd. The territory under study belonged to Vodskaia and Shelonskaia Piatina.
