Jesus, the Bread of Life

White bread, rye bread, wheat bread, pita bread, zucchini bread, pumper- nickel bread, baguettes and ciabatta! Perhaps no food comes in as many varieties as bread, known as the staff of life. Because bread is so basic to our life, God was wise to nourish us with divine life in the form of bread, the Eucharist.

Jesus foretold this marvel when he claimed, “I am the bread of life…I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world”(:48,51). This was not just a figure of speech. Jesus meant the words literally. At the , the night before he died, he held bread in his hands and said to his disciples, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me (1 Corinthians 11:24). Ever since then Chris- tians have been celebrating the breaking of the bread. We come together to share a meal and be fed with the bread that is Jesus. The Eucharist is a gift of Jesus’ love through which we remember his passion, death and resurrection and share in them.

When Jesus called himself the bread of life, his disciples no doubt thought of . Through Moses God sent down manna, bread from heaven that fed the chosen people for 40 years before they reached the promised land. Jesus explained, “Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that com- ers down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die” (John 6: 49-51).

God prepared us for the mystery of the Eucharist in several ways. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a town whose name means “House of Bread.” His mother laid him in a manger, a feeding trough, a hint that someday he would be food for the world. All four tell the story of the miraculous feeding of the crowds, which foreshadows what happens at Mass. Jesus fed thousands of people by having his disciples distribute five barley loaves and two fish. Today, throughout , millions of people are fed with the bread of life. Even at the time Jesus gave us the Eucharist was a clue to its meaning – the time of Passo- ver. At this feast, celebrated in that upper room, Jesus and his disciples were celebrating their salvation from death in Egypt by a meal that included unleavened bread.

When we partake of the Eucharist, Jesus feeds us with his body and blood. We enter communion with him and with one another. Unlike other food, which becomes part of us, Jesus in the conse- crated bread and wine makes us more like him. Therefore, we too, are to be bread for the world.

The living bread sustains us and prepares us for that day when we will come to the heavenly banquet. It is a pledge of future glory. It is how Christ fulfills his promise, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (:10).

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Study and Reflect on the Sunday Readings!

As followers of Jesus, we want to understand Scripture in a way that applies to our life today. The Christian practice of lectio divina is a way of approaching the that helps Scripture to come alive. The Lectio Divina Bible Study Groups use a variety of re- sources to explore and discuss the readings for the upcoming Sun- day. Through reading, reflecting and praying, readers trust that God will speak through Scripture when open to its message.

Find new ways to apply the Word of God to daily life and become more effective witnesses to Christ. A richly rewarding way to study the Word of God.

Lectio Divina PM Group Monday evenings from 6:30– 8:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon 2:00 – 3:15 p.m. (Due to the current health crisis, sessions are currently being conducted via Zoom)

Feast Day – August 11

Though 10 years younger than her townsman, Fran- cis of Assisi, Clare was drawn to his radical mes- sage of serving God in abject poverty. Despite objections from her aristo- cratic family, who wanted her to marry, she gave up the world with Francis’ help and found- ed the Second Order of St. Francis, known worldwide as the Poor Clares. For 40 years, she guided the San Damiano community, whose nuns included her sister and widowed mother. She served the other nuns who went out to beg, was often sick because of their hard life, and was proclaimed a saint just two years after she died.

The impact of the COVID 19 pan- demic has certainly been difficult for families. We don’t know what the next school year will look like, but no matter what, our goal is to help and support the children need in their preparation for a productive school year.

While we feel the joy of coming together as a parish family, we also feel a responsibility to conduct our drive in the safest man- ner possible. Therefore, once again, in lieu of purchasing sup- plies, the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is conducting a cash (or checks) only drive. Please no gift cards. This will allow us to distribute financial support in the most appropriate means to students in need at Most Blessed Trinity sharing parish, Mundelein High School, Frassati Catholic Academy and families of our community who reach out to us directly.

Thanks to your generosity over the years, we have helped many children feel good about their first day of school. Here is your op- portunity to help us continue this tradition of supporting the less fortunate youth of our community. Please make your check out to St Vincent de Paul Society with “school drive” in the memo. Please note: Donations are for general use unless specifically “school drive.”

If you are attending Mass at church, have your donation ready to drop in the SVdP Alms for the Needy box as you enter. Our box is on the southwest wall of the narthex, before you enter the double doors to the main church.

Volunteers create shawls to be given to parishioners and others near and far who are suffering and are in need of a tangi- ble reminder of our prayers for them. Shawls and lapghans are started, worked on and finished with prayer and blessed. Each shawl brings to the recipient the warmth, love and concern that through prayers, has been absorbed into every stitch. Prayer shawls are made to give to those who are ill, grieving or lonely. They may also be given to celebrate a joyous occasion. Anyone may give or receive a prayer shawl. The Prayer Shawl Ministry is open to all those who knit and crochet, both the young and the wise, even those who do not drive or who may be homebound, to be in- volved in a ministry at St. Mary of the Annunciation. Prayer Shawl Ministers offer their gifts - prayer and crocheting or knitting - to stitch these special gifts for people who are suffering and are in need of prayers. All who enjoy knitting or crocheting, including those new to the craft, are invited to lend their ongoing time and gifts. Prayer Shawl Ministers look forward to hopefully meeting again this fall to turn in completed shawls, share a bit of camarade- rie and pray while they work on their latest shawls.
