Right about there:' The pretty blond extends her left arm at about a 90-degree angle into the azure sky of Tampere, Finland. "The plane comes in from there. The pilot is in touch with a member of the crew. And at the exact moment the plane comes swooping down to make its attack:' A female general? Hardly. A scene from a war movie? Could be-­ but Isn't. A scene from the popular outdoor theatrical presentation of Finland's most famous war novel, The Unknown Soldier? Correct. The airplane attack, which regu­ larly punctuates the pleasant summer evenings in Tampere, blends two Finnish characteristics­ a penchant for realism and a pas­ sion for drama. Appropriately, they meet on Finland's stage. For Finland. perhaps more than any other country, is a land that is stage struck. Explains one Finn: "Everyone's got some bam in him-- the Finns a little more so than others:' .\od the ham stretches throughout the land. from the somber, sparsely­ populated frontier of Lapland to the nonh to the more populous, indus­ trialized regtons to the south. In this land of 4.6 million persons. tbere are 40 professional theat~s and about 8,000 amateur theaters and dramatic clubs. Last Year nearly 1.5 mill ion persons at­ tended theatrical production.;. In Tampere alone. which has five thea­ ters, tbe number of theater-goers totaled more than 400,000- and this in a city with about 150,000 persons. Actually it is incongruous that the Finns should become so aroused over the theater. Outside of alcohol, little else manages to stir them from their usual taciturn selves. Finnish writer Matti Kurjensaari offers an explanation: "In the imaginary wc>rld of the theater the Finn dares to unburden himself, to reveal his innermost soul. He thinks that he is acting. But the truth is probably that when he believes he is acting he is in reality living his truest self." The scientists consider its age in millions of years and the most parts of Finland are geologically the oldest in Europe. A little to the north of Tampere, in Aitolahti, the oldest rock in the world has been found. The history of Kinlands shows that a steadily resident Finnish popula- tion lived about Tampere already in the 6th century. On the Pyynikki ridge and along the shores of Pyhäjärvi-lake there have been pagan sacri- fices and not far from the city the remains of an old fortress have been found. Around the waterfalls of Tampere in very early times the traders of the interior already came to barter. This Was due to the excellent Water- ways, and in due time, although very late, the city was founded. This happened in 1779, during the reign of king Gustaphus 111 of Sweden. The first map shows 56 lots, but they had to be divided between 80 applicants and these formed the first population of the city-to-be. A map on the last page indicates how the city has grown since. Poor Theatre, Rich Theatre: Layers of Exchange in Two Adaptations of Ingmar Bergman and Paavo Haavikko TEEMU PAAVOLAINEN ABSTRACT The article analyzes two Finnish theatre adaptations of Fanny och Alexander, by Ingmar Bergman, and Rauta-aika, by Paavo Haavikko, premiered in 2010 and 2011 respective- ly. The key question is, how the two works brought the filmic originals’ wealth of material to theatrically manageable proportions, and how the themes of poverty and prosperity were developed by their scenic machineries – a question of theatricality, but also, if you will, of a sort of theatrical exchange: “golden age” to exile or decline in the story-worlds, lavish film to theatrical constraint in production. The first two sections take a specifically economic perspective on the original TV projects and their central storylines; the two final sections address how these storylines were locally woven by the revolving stage and the revolving auditorium used in the theatre productions. On various levels, a play- fully “monetary” distinction of metonymy and metaphor is suggested in which metonymic contiguity stands for contextual prosperity (as experience, community, immediacy), met- aphoric substitution for relative deprivation (as distance, abstraction, exchange).     DEVELOPING CULTURAL TOURISM IN THE TAMPERE REGION Impact of Tampere Region Festivals and Cultural Attractions in 2013 Introduction In 2012–2014, Tampere Region Festivals – Pirfest ry and Innolink Research Oy carried out a survey on the regional economic impact of cultural tourism and the quality of tourist attractions in the Tampere region. The survey was carried out as a visitor survey combined with visitor information received from the attractions. It involved 37 member festivals of Pirfest ry/Tampere Region Festivals, 34 cultural and tourist attractions in the Tampere region and 13 hotels. The attractions surveyed were located in 10 different municipalities in the Tampere region. The list of participants is included at the end of this report. The visitor survey was completed by 13,523 people, so it was exceptionally extensive in scope. According to the survey, the festivals and attractions attracted a total of 2.5 million visitors, who contributed €253 million to the local economy. Of this, €139.3 million consisted of tourism income brought by tourists from outside the Tampere region and €113 million was local tourism income from within the region. The Finnish Tourist Board defines cultural tourism as follows: “Cultural tourism produces tourism products and services and offers them on business grounds to locals and people from else- where, respecting regional and local cultural resources. The purpose is to create great experiences and give people the chance to get to know these cultural resources, learn from them or participate in them.     Preliminary communication Received: 17 February 2014 Accepted: 31 March 2014 DOI: 10.15176/vol51no104 UDK 394.3(480) The Indigenization of Swedish and Hungarian Elements in Finnish Folk Dance PETRI HOPPU School of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Tampere This article discusses the influence of Hungarian folk dances and Swedish polskas on the Finnish folk dance movement. The central analytical tool in the study is Arjun Appadurai’s concept of “indigenization”: imported cultural elements take on local features and cultural hybrids develop. The Swedish polskas and Hungarian dances have created a new level of folk dancing in Finland, representing technical quality- and skills that are commonly pursued. However, it is claimed that the indigenization of these dances entails that they have also been relocated and domesticated in Fin land, and that they have become a part of the local embodied culture and discourse. Key words: indigenization, folk dance, performance, dance event - - In this article, I examine the development of the Finnish folk dance move ment from the 1960s to the present. During the last few decades the move ment has experienced several changes. Particularly, the unofficial, but still for many decades very influential national folk dance canon in Finland was- challenged in many ways through the introduction of new folk dance forms, of which the Swedish polskas and Hungarian folk dances are the most signifi cant and popular today. The process of “Swedenization” and “Hungarization” has continued for more than thirty years, and it has had a crucial impact on folk dance activities in Finland. Following Kevin Gotham’s (2005: 312) ideas about cultural change, I claim that the development has by no means been- linear; rather I see it as a complex and versatile process that has included both the homogenizing forces of sameness and uniformity and the diversify ing forces of difference and hybridity.
