  • A Day in Tampere"
"A Day in Tampere" Created by: Cityseeker 7 Locations Bookmarked Spy Museum "Espionage Stories" This unusual museum is housed within the Finalyson factory building near the busy center of Tampere, and is the first museum of its kind in the world. A curious collection of espionage awaits eager visitors here, featuring exhibit after exhibit about double agents around the globe, their stories, and the cleverly covert devices at their disposal. The lives of by Catlemur notorious spies like Julius Rosenberg, Mata Hari and other legendary secret agents seem wildly interesting, given that one is surrounded by lethal umbrellas, bottles of invisible ink and encryption apparatus. There is also a special collection of garden-variety spy instruments, including lie detectors, eavesdropping equipment, and infrared vision devices. Visitors can also take an 'agent test', following which they receive a recommendation letter to an espionage bureau. +358 3 212 3007 www.vakoilumuseo.fi/inde spy.museum@vakoilumuse Satakunnankatu 18, Tampere x.php/en/ o.fi Tampere Cathedral "Twentieth Century Cathedral" Spearing the bright blue skies of Tampere, the eponymous cathedral is one of the city's best-known sites, inspiring awe with its granite facade, red roofs, and dramatic spires. Designed by architect Lars Sonck, the church was built in a stately National Romantic style. This church aroused vehement debates when it was built at the beginning of the 20th Century, by MatteoTRphoto spurred by the bold paintings of famous Finnish artist Hugo Simberg. The frescoes that were mired in controversy depicted serpentine imagery, nubile figures and morbid skeletons, and denoted sin and corruption.

50 th EDXC Conference in Tampere Alan Pennington reports from Finland The 2017 European DX Council (EDXC) conference was held in Tampere, Finland between 18 th - 20 th August, hosted by the Finnish DX Association (FDXA) (Suomen DX-Liitto (SDXL) in Finnish). Local FDXA member club is the Tampere DX-listeners club (TreDXK). Both EDXC and TreDXK, were celebrating their 50 th anniversary this year, having been founded in 1967. On 6 th December this year, Finland will also celebrate 100 years of independence from Russia. So lots to celebrate! Helsinki Central railway station. Risto outside FDXA office in Helsinki Those delegates staying in Helsinki on the day before the conference started were kindly invited on a short walking tour of some of Helsinki’s city centre attractions, led by Risto Vähäkainu of the FDXA, which ended with some welcome local refreshments at the FDXA office in Annankatu. The city of Tampere is in southern Finland, a 160km 90-minute express train ride north of the capital, Helsinki. It is sited between two lakes which are linked by the Tammerkoski, a 1km channel of rapids whose power was harnessed by the textile industry in the 19 th century, and whose heritage red brick mills still line its banks. As a result, the city is often compared to Manchester (UK), but today the old industries have gone, and it is a thriving modern technology and university city, the third largest in Finland with a population of around 220,000. The conference venue was the modern Varala Sports Institute (https://varala.fi ), sited in a lakeside forest, 3km from Tampere city centre.

WELCOMING WORDS On behalf of the Association for Cultural Studies, I am delighted to welcome you to Tampere and to the 2014 "Crossroads in Cultural Studies" conference. This is the tenth Crossroads conference to date, and we have returned to the site where four of the first five such gatherings were held. One of the main hallmarks of the Crossroads conference has always been its ability to showcase the rich variety of ways that cultural studies is practiced in different national and regional contexts. As such, I encourage of you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to expand your sense of what cultural studies is – and can be. Let me also extend my heartfelt thanks to Conference Director Mikko Lehtonen and his team of conference organizers and program planners. A conference of this size and scope requires a tremendous amount of labor over several years, and I deeply appreciate all the time and energy that our hosts have devoted to making this a successful and enjoyable event for all of us. The next four days promise to be an intellectually rewarding gathering of cultural studies practitioners from across the globe that will enrich us all. Welcome – and enjoy! Gilbert B.

  • The EPHAR Congress
Proposal to host The EPHAR Congress in July 2012 in Tampere, Finland Conferentially yours - Tampere To the EPHAR Council and Member Societies Invitation to hold the EPHAR Congress in July 2012 in Tampere, Finland Dear Madams, Dear Sirs, Finnish Pharmacological Society has taken the iniative to cordially invite the EPHAR 2012 Congress to Tampere, Finland. Finnish Pharmacological Society was founded in 1948 to promote research, education and training in pharmacology in Finland. Today the Society has over 500 active members. Pharmacological sciences are widely represented in higher education and research in pharmacy and medicine in Finland. Extensive pharmacological research is being carried out in several Finnish universities and research institutes. Strong research areas are neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, immunopharmacology and drug metabolism. Finland has a solid reputation for an efficient organisation of scientific congresses and other international events. It is a safe and reliable destination. The special geographical location at the crossroads of East and West makes Finland a conference destination, that is easily accessible for delegates from all over world. I propose Tampere Hall - located in the city of Tampere, Finland’s second largest urban region – as the venue for the EPHAR 2012 Congress. Tampere Hall has every facility to ensure a well-organised congress. This internationally recognised congress centre has thrice been evaluated best congress centre in Finland and is known for its environmentally conscious efforts. One highlight on Tampere Hall’s reference list is the ICT X, World Congress of International Society of Toxicology with 1,500 delegates which was held in Tampere in July 2004. Tampere is located between two large lakes that grace the city with their beauty and provide water-based recreational opportunties.
